Okay, curiosity question for those a little more in tune with this simple majority vote process: when it was pretty clear there were 20 people holding up McCarthy, and that wasn't going to budge... what was stopping the Democrats from taking their last 10 reps alphabetically and voting present to lower the total needed for Hakeem Jeffries to win? Pride? Sense of the right thing? Wanting to see how far the GQP could implode?

The math doesn’t work. When everyone was there, there were 434 people and Jeffries had 212 votes. 218 was the threshold.

If ten Dems vote present, that brings the total votes down to 424, which makes 213 the threshold, but now Jeffries only has 202 votes.

I almost made the same mistake after a few votes..then slapped my head cause...duh!

If he cut the deal on SS then every Democrats should send him a thank you card! He is giving them the House in '24 if the only things they have to run on are "Hunter Biden's Laptop" and that he tried to screw SS. Best part is he will be doing all of this and nothing will change because no way The Senate or Biden sign off on gutting SS. Way to go Qev!

if the house passes that to raise it, but the senate tries another tack. neither passes and both can sit and smuggly blame the other.

"we tried to raise the debt ceiling!!! but the dems wouldn't play ball and they brought down the gov'ment. not us!!" will run 24/7 on those special major news networks ;-)

And 70% of the people would ignore them...even the Olds wouldn't buy it just like they didn't about ObamaCare.

All they have to do is play a game of chicken with Biden over the debt ceiling. Odds are they'll get stupid austerity measures while in a recession like they did with Obama in 2011.

Particularly because Republican Members are so mendacious they would blame any reduction on Biden, and Republican voters are so lazy and ignorant they would eat it up.

It is remarkable to me that the centerpiece of the Republican economic agenda is to destroy the social safety net their constituents depend upon, and their voters cheer them on. But then again they live on the planet that Republicans are turning into an over, and they love that, too.

Spite is stupid.
 
I have a difficult time believing that a GOP lead by 14 time loser McCarthy has the political chops to get much out of anything. It feels weird thinking the Democrats are currently the more savvy party.

Republicans don't agree on much but they do agree on owning the libs.
