Minnesota Gophers 2022-23

I suppose that was generally a pretty good period, the game and both teams. I'd really like the Gophers to win though :)

Grace really doesn't like to get in there and mix it up much I don't think

What was striking to me is that UMD couldn't keep the puck in their offensive zone. They had chances, but only one at a time.

1-0 Gophers after 2.

Gophers played a pretty darn good 2nd period. Just a little puck luck and our position would be more comfortable.

Ostertag-Wethington are having a beautiful game as a defensive pair. Wethington, great play for the goal!

Gophers played a heck of a game.

Props to Skylar Vetter on a fantastic performance
Again, Ostertag and Wethington defensive combo!-Gracie was a monster D
Not one after the whistle pushing and shoving scrum in front of either net the whole game. And that's OK with me
Taylor Heise has hopefully 2 more games to finally(!) do something as a difference maker late in the season that is worthy of her overall Gopher career. I hope she does it!

Soderberg sure likes to kick the net off of its pegs when things get tough.

I thought she cost her team dearly in that moment. She was so upset about giving up that goal and so much wanted it not to count that she insisted that the coach challenge the goal. That chances of that one being overturned were extremely low. I mean, if the net was off before Murphy put it in, then it could only have been off because Soderberg knocked it off. Which seems like that would have been a delay of game penalty.

But she gestured to the bench insisting on the challenge and when the challenge was unsuccessful the ensuing delay of game penalty was the only penalty of the game.

Tough moment for Crowell but she must have known, everyone else in the building did, and she should have declined to make the challenge.

I thought they had a better chance of getting the goal called off there than they did on the first goal. I thought it was a pretty low likelihood that they were going to come back from 2-0 down with the way that game had gone, so I could see why they took that chance; they did kill the penalty, so that didn't cost them beyond 2 minutes on the clock and some PK energy. The first one wasn't even a judgement call -- skate on the line, the play is good. Unless I'm really missing something there ...

Was it the goal 'camera right', far end from the main entrance? Even the Gopher announcers (other games and days, I didn't see today) have commented how easily that one seems to come off.

I strongly suspect that Crowell decided to challenge that play even though she knew the probability was high that she'd end up with a delay of game penalty because she didn't think that UMD could come back from down two goals. There's an adage in bridge that, if the only way you can win a hand is if the person to your right has the jack of hearts, you have to play as if they have the jack of hearts even if you don't think it's likely. Crowell thought that the only way the Bulldogs could win is if the goal wouldn't count, so she challenged it.

She knocked the net off in each period today, once at that end and twice at the other.

On the two that got reviewed, she made sure that those nets were coming off no matter how tight/loose the pegs were. The one in the second period, she kicked off the post on her right side, and then kicked out the back of the goal to make sure it was moving. She might have been better served to concentrate more on stopping the pucks. I don't remember her being so flagrant in the past, but my memory isn't what it once was.

In other news, the Gophers haven't played outside of Minnesota since Nov. 26. They haven't even played outside of the Twin Cities since Jan. 21 in Bemidji. That one changes on Friday.

I was at the game so previously I was relying on my in person first impression but I have now watched replays from two angles. Crowell played for the person to her right to have the jack of hearts but that net was solidly on the pegs until Soderberg shoves against it as the shot flies over her shoulder into the top corner. Her request to the bench for review? She is a great goalie and a hallmark of the great ones is that they are unable to believe that the puck beat them even when it is very clear that the puck has beaten them.

In another thread, Eeyore was talking about faceoffs and Heise getting worn down due to needing to be on the ice for so many draws late in games. I wonder if Oden still practices faceoffs? She ranked near the top of the league that last couple of seasons until her move back to the blue line. That would be an option toward the end of games when she is often on the ice anyway.

Eeyore, another game yesterday where we both got our wish: offense got its three goals (inspite of Heise and GZum not finding the net) and defense showed up. Although the latter did involve a bit of good fortune with a shot that hit the inside of the pipe and stayed out, plus two first-period saves for Vetter on the backdoor that I had already mentally accepted as goals against.

Well deserved, Frosty!
As an FYI, the finalists for this award automatically come from the coach(es) of the year from each conference and the coaches of the four FF teams. Accomplish either of these, and you're a finalist.
