Why do we need to increase taxes on gas and alcohol? Why those specifically?

Why can't we put a tax on stock transactions? A penny on every share traded. On companies who buy back their own stock to boost share price? Why can't we eliminate the income cutoff on which SS is taxed? Why don't companies get penalized for moving their headquarters overseas to avoid taxes, instead of rewarded? Taxes on compensation awarded as stock options rather than salary?

Why don't we cut the defense department's budget by $200 billion/year, and apply they to the deficit? Or put it in the SS "trust fund"?

I’m fine with all those revenue increases as long as you balance the books.

China, Russia, etc would certainly love to see us reduce defense spending. I think it would be a huge mistake and cost us in the long run.

Edit: We’d have a trillion dollars more this year with no national debt.

What I figured. Wants to do a little social engineering via the long arm of the government.

But I thought the "Conservatives" frowned upon that kind of thing.

It all depends on whose ox is being gored. Book bans are fine until you ban the Bible. Etc, etc, etc.

Taxing gas seems just fine to me - SO LONG AS we actually address public transportation in an meaninful way such that retail gasoline truly is a luxury good. As long as poor people have to rely on retail gas to get to work (i.e. to survive), keep your paws off, Drew. The right to life should not be taxable.

There's a lot more stuff needs to done to the tax code before we start talking about reducing deficits by hiking gas and booze taxes.

Cutting welfare for companies that make billions in profits would be a healthy start. Of all the things that don’t need donations or even tax cuts- they would be first in line. A close second would be to eliminate the unearned tax structure and make it even.

Why do you want to stifle capitalism? Job killer.
