I just read an opinion piece that says China is perfectly happy having this conflict drag out. It will keep us and the West's attention away from Asia, where China is trying to gain a bigger influence. And if China is lucky, as it drags out, there may be cracks in the European nations which can leave an opening for China to help out against America's desires.

Not sure if that’s fully thought out or not. Right now, most of the west is supporting Ukraine with items you would find at the recycling center after someone updated their home. So it’s not a massive new hit to anyone,yet.

And at the same time, companies are distributing their manufacturing more globally than before. So in that respect, china isn’t paying attention to themselves.

Something I have noticed in my world: in the wake of Russia being exposed as a Potemkin army, we are really starting to get the terror ramped up about China. There must always been an excuse to divert trillions from human flourishing to the death merchants and eavesdroppers. We cannot allow our national wealth to be spent on investing in those of us most in need -- it must go to those corporate owners and large Wall Street investors who already have the most.

That's America since 1981. Completely a coincidence that over the same period we went from 1st to 35th in quality of life and 50th in social mobility. Keep voting on those Biblical issues, white Poors. It's working out great for you.

The true sad thing about that is it’s almost all corporate welfare. So many items built that had no support from the pentagon. Let alone how we are over 50% of the entire worlds armed forces.

But people like drew are whining when a mom loses her job and needs help to keep he kids in good health. Because helping the poor is apparently anti Christian compared to making sure we can kill the entire world because of fear. Let alone that we should all be armed to kill each other.

And to think, 5 years ago when some on here were saying Russia was a real threat and a few (me the loudest) were saying it was BS no one believed us. Russia has been cosplaying it since the end of their Afghanistan War.

BTW that story plays up the shovel thing as shocking...the Russians have been doing that since WW1. My great grandfather was once sent to the front lines with a broom handle because they ran out of guns. He was shot on 7 different occasions and resent to the front.

It's also rightwing welfare for white rural kids who are utterly incapable of any other line of work.

The Right created a form of make work welfare for their own useless progeny, and then raided social programs for people genuinely in need to pay for it.

I have no issue helping people out. My beef is more on the revenue side. I’m 100% against deficits unless there are major extenuating circumstances like the financial crisis or COVID.

No doubt we should hit the rich hard but I would also increase taxes on gas, alcohol, etc. We’re going to waste close to a trillion dollars on interest this year. That is a much bigger waste than defense or welfare spending.

You say that the deficit is important, but I bet you’ve voted R much more than D. And if you actually look at history since 1981, the Rs in control have ballooned the debt and deficit considerably. So put your votes where your mouth is.

This. Republicans love to blow holes in the deficit. It's a core unwritten strategy to make Government appear like it doesn't work.
 
Why do we need to increase taxes on gas and alcohol? Why those specifically?

Why can't we put a tax on stock transactions? A penny on every share traded. On companies who buy back their own stock to boost share price? Why can't we eliminate the income cutoff on which SS is taxed? Why don't companies get penalized for moving their headquarters overseas to avoid taxes, instead of rewarded? Taxes on compensation awarded as stock options rather than salary?

​​​​​​Why don't we cut the defense department's budget by $200 billion/year, and apply they to the deficit? Or put it in the SS "trust fund"?
