ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Speaking of Kasdan, he's promising the Episode VIII will be weird, compared to the other movies in the franchise.

During an interview with The L.A. Times, ‘Star Wars’ screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan – who worked on the original trilogy as well as ‘The Force Awakens’ – spoke about ‘Star Wars 8’.

“These movies will all be so different,” he explained. “[Star Wars 8 director] Rian Johnson is a friend of mine — he’s going to make some weird thing.”

I don't follow the SW cult too closely, but is it actually possible that Lucas is so insulated he doesn't realize, even today, that the Prequels sucked donkey dong?

Yeah, I don't think that he realizes that in his attempt make them completely different—different planets, different spaceships to make it new, he lost something that made the original trilogy special.

I think he could have made them different all he liked as long as he made them good, or maybe just un-terrible.

All that plus his retroactive rape of the originals is unforgiveable. It's possible the guy just simply wasn't the reason the original were good. That may have come from others working with him, because when it was just him... phew, somebody open a window.

I just mean that in is strive to be new and different, he lost so much of what star wars was, trying to tell so much via CGI and dialog instead of painting an amazing picture and letting it do most of the "talking." He got stuck in too much politics and too much midiclorian crap.

He also fails to realize that different ships and planets were never the problem. Most people were looking forward to seeing this giant, strange galaxy unfold on the screen, but we didn't want to sit through the tedium of imaginary politics or the adventures of a nine-year-old boy.

I read one of many ideas as to how they could've told the story of Anakin's downfall into becoming Vader by focusing the prequels with Kenobi as the main character and Anakin as a closely watched supporting role, the sort that is almost attached at the hip, showing how Obi-Wan failed to properly teach Anakin in the ways of the Force. That could've made a good series, rather than the horribly written "love story" with lines that were so cheesy and cringe worthy that they killed a lot of the good faith the original trilogy created. It was the most promising and well developed what-if alternatives I ever saw, even keeping the main idea of Revenge of the Sith intact, only also making it believable and entertaining.

The politics never bothered me. The insipid love story and the atrocious writing did.

Assuming 8 and 9 go well they should just double back and completely redo 1-3, and shoot Lucas' prequels into whatever black hole Highlander 2 went into.

But he had to put C3PO and R2 in them, had anakin grow up on Tatooine, Yoda and Chewbacca are buddies...

Outside of Leia being from there we got zero tie in for Alderaan im sorry. Hell all we know is they are "peaceful". They dont even expand on it later and she shows almost zero grief about it as time goes on. I think that is beyond nitpicky.

The point is not the planets themselves, it is showing the destructive power of the weapon.
I disagree:

1- You know it's Leias home planet.
2- It's easy to infer that they're deeply involved in the rebellion.
3- It's still literally infinitely times more than we know or care about the Hosnian system.

You had to mention Highlander 2!? You just ruined the rest of 2015 for me!

Sorry but that tells me nothing. Hell Alderaan isnt even mentioned once Leia gets to Yavin...it served one purpose to show what a ****** Grand Moff Tarkin was they could have actually blown up Dantooine and it would have had the same effect.

I like this idea. Lot less of a love story between Padme and Anakin and more about Kenobi's training Anakin with interference from Palpitine. Maybe have Anakin and Padme bumping uglies just happen like one time, instead of a long drown out romance. Being that its Disney now, it couldn't be a rape. But more of a must a moment of passion that shouldn't have happened.

Saw today.

Would like to see what happened with Han jr betraying Luke's summer campers and killing the lot. Did that get blown over cause Luke looks too old to make it work?

What's up with the girl and her force? Thought Mookie paid attention but that wasn't mentioned at all was it?

They don't really give her background, even joke about it with some passing lines at the start of the movie when she first meets up with BB-8.

The writers for the screenplay said that every time they tried to get Luke into the movie earlier than when they did, the entire story became a tale about Luke, and that's not what they wanted for this movie. So they left him for the end... to take over the next movie, I guess.

It's mentioned once on Yavin - "when we heard about Alderaan, we feared the worst." (No, I haven't seen ANH way too many times)

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Finally saw it yesterday, wife took me for my birthday. I liked it, though I need to let it settle in my brain for a little. But as others have said, it has much more the feel of the originals than the prequels did. Yes, the story has a similar feel to IV, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. If you at IV/V/VI, they all spend the first 2/3 with people trying to get away from something or get somewhere, and all the crazy things that happen along the way, and then the final 1/3 has some big showdown, whether it be against a death star or Vader. And really, it's in the first 2/3 that you really get to know and like the characters, and then the final 1/3 looks real cool with explosions. So along those lines, this movie gave us time to know the characters and see them interact, and that's where the fun is. The prequels, though, always felt like they had too little of the first 2/3 and too much of the "here's the super import event" stuff of the last 1/3. Maybe part of that is being a prequel you have certain milestones you have to hit, so you can't just let the story unfold, but more of it is just lazy writing.

Got around to seeing it yesterday. Liked it a lot. I wanted to be irritated by Ren's wimpyness at times, but every time he's really faced with a choice he goes dark. Also, he evidently has more training to do. I like to think we have yet to see the true evil badarse in him like we did with Vader.
