ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Oh yeah, and JJ understands restraint.

There was the obligatory alien band, but he didn't linger on them for too long.

Re: the funny lines: Finn was classic. Absolutely hilarious.

I just never got why some would go all ga-ga over sidestories, or whatever they are considered. I assume Lucas gave the books his blessing?

Originally they were considered canon. It got ridiculous by the end, and simply for $$$ reasons I can see why Disney jettisoned them (don't have to pay the authors royalties, same reason Tom Paris in Star Trek Voyager wasn't the same character from the ST:TNG episode that the actor played).

I just wonder how the movies would treat that? There is a small number of people (relatively) that read the books, or even cared about the books. Can't really tie in stuff to the movies, you know? The average joe (like me) would be lost on it.

Re: ZOMG! THE FORCE AWAKENS!: All-Spoiler And Discussion Thread

Paraphrasing, but...

Han to bad guy there to collect debt: "Have I ever let you down?"

Bad guy: "Twice!"

Han: "What was the second time?"

Gold :D

Gonna miss Han Solo. :(

Re: The Old Guy...

Star Wars made $517 million worldwide this weekend...yes you read that right

Depends on the books. If these movies were the Grand Admiral Thrawn trilogy, you'd be fine. You wouldn't know Thrawn or Mata Jade, but you didn't know Finn or Rey before, either, so you're in the same place either way.

Again, I understand Disney's choice, but it doesn't mean I have to like it 100%

The weekend record for all movies combined is something like $255 million, which means it almost set that record by itself

Jurassic World (IIRC) was $218MM on their opening weekend, which is darn impressive.

Zahn was on Facebook stating that he doesn't have much say over what Disney does with his stories. I don't know the legals, obviously, but he made it sound like control and ownership of those stories were 100% with LucasFilm and the publisher now. Would the age cause that now that the entire Thrawn Trilogy is over 20 years old?

Decent. Better than the Episode 1 series.

Copyright belongs to the creator, so the original characters/universe/etc. would belong to Lucas while anything Zahn created would belong to him, absent anything else. But copyrights are easily transferable, and I wouldn't be surprised if the contract gave control to everything to Lucas. That said, I'm guessing Zahn would still be owed some royalties, if he had even a halfway decent agent. There had to be some thought they could be turned into movies in the future.

Unless the (c) ran out. I don't recall the time limit for "public use" or whatever....

Life of the author plus 70 years for original attributed works, or 95 years from publication for anonymous or corporate works for hire.

The latter has been extended numerous times in response to pressure from Disney every time Steamboat Willie is about to enter the public domain. It's up again in 2023.

When did they extend it again? I thought it was 2019
