Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

It's funny that it says this in the article "Xipamide, the substance found in Schleck's urine, is not specifically mentioned on WADA's prohibited substance" So if it isn't a specifically named banned substance how can Schleck be penalized? Or are all Diuretics banned?
Totally agree. I'm sure they have a reason but it's hard to understand how a diuretic enhances performance. You'd think they'd want to stay hydrated not the other way round. Anyone who knows please enlighten me.

I'm not positive on this, but I seem to recall that by helping flush the system of water, some guys have taken them to try to flush out traces of other drugs. Aside from that, I also can't see what they would help from a performance standpoint.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Yes. Essentially there are 3 ways to have a PED leave the body, metabolize, urine, or feces. In this case, and I'm far from an expert on this (plus I think they are all doping anyway), the substance is a masking agent. It is not helping him perform so much as hiding his PED use. The only helpful thing it could do, I would think, is help him lose water weight, before the Tour.

I find it a bit telling that his defense will be that he was poisoned. It seems this is taylor made case to say that his supplement was tainted. Then again it is Bruyneel, so I'm sure he'll have a backdated TUE printed up directly!

well aside from the science, you're probably right. Anyone who is not, gets left behind quite quickly as in Cadel today.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Voeckler for the win and the polka dot. It is all over barring a crash out or total meltdown by Wiggo.

Find it interesting that Froome says maybe with a different course I would be team leader. Froome if Wiggins wins the Tour you will never be the team leader for Sky during the Tour until Wiggo retires. The good thing is between this years Tour and last years Vuelta you can have your choice of new teams to race for.

This tour has been over since opening day. It was confirmed when Evans didn't have the legs to get any time back the first week. Then sledgehammered by the time trial. On the bright side I haven't wasted anywhere as much time as I usually do watching races. Watching Sky ride at a impossibly high pace is no good.

You could have watch Moser in Poland...that was fun racing! Its amazing how attacking riding makes things interesting.

Cav finally pumps some life into the race! LLS takes a peak, but didn't notice Cav. Then he jumps past his final remaining break member. Sadly for him Cav put in a massive sprint and blew them all away!

I normally knock Cav for needing the help of his lead out train to do what he does or sitting up when he knows he isn't going to win and pouts but that was a tremendous finish yesterday. Very impressive sprint by the missle. It was also cool to see Wiggins lead him out and then give a big fist pump when he won.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

The Men's Road Race was great if you don't love bunch sprints! The Brits wore down and couldn't bring the group back. Just as I realized the break was going to win (yeah Cancellara!) he crashes from the lead. Vino then passes a bewildered Uran and takes the gold. Lots of regrets from the guys in the break who let Vino and Uran go. As well as Cance. He was either going to drag someone like Phinney or Kristoff to the gold, or win it himself.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Yeah that was good racing! The arrogance of Sky to try and control that race with only 4 rider and according to Boonen, not ask anyone else for help?!? Then Cance crashes. Although I liked the racing I really didn't like the final results. I'm not a huge Vino fan, with the doping and then buying LBL a few years ago, the Olympics deserve a better champ. But then Uran is the champ and he is Sky and made a HUGE mistake in the sprint. So then Kristoff, who is just Meh. I also went nuts for a while when Eisel took up a position in front of Cav at the end of the Sky train. I was sure that he was going to lead him out. That would have been terrible.

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

Well I was ABC for the road race Anybody but Cav, especially after all the post race whining where they complained that no one would help them bring the break back. Yeah let a 20 break go up the road and then expect countries with a teammate in the break to help bring it back so cav can win the sprint. So tomorrow I am ABW anybody but Wiggins. Come on Canc and Tony.

Two new races start this week with TV coverage

Nature Valley Gran Prix is starting Thursday on CBS SH
Tour of Utah starts Tuesday, at least TV coverage does, on MSG here in NY

Are we going to have a Velogames USCHO league for the Vuelta?

If so, count me in. Have to defend the TDF title, after all :)

Edit: scoped out the rider list. This is going to be a challenge...

Set up the league

League Name: USCHO
League Code: 15001833

I noticed Montcoutie is on the start list wasn't he supposed to retire after the tour?

Re: Your 2012 Cycling Thread

I'm in. I managed to avoid picking any UK Postal riders, so I feel good about that. And I managed to grab 3 sprinters, too bad there are virtually no sprint stages.

Ive been staring at mine all week. Still can't make up my mind on how much emphasis I should put on the sprints...
