Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

From what i understand from the RPI thread, Yale actually played the trap last night in Troy. a total 180 from the run forecheck and gun system of the past three years. I listened to the game and Union was 0 for7 on the powerplay, the announcers stated that Yale completely dominated the first period and then just toyed with Union after the fourth goal.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Hi, all. I was at Messa Rink to watch the game against Union tonight. The first goal was pure magic--what a fine one-timer that showed great chemistry from the O'neill line. In fact, for the first half of the game, we looked as good as we did in any of our best games last year--completely dominating both ends of the ice, and putting up some prolific SOG numbers. Then something happened midway through the game--either we got complacent or tired, I don't know which, but Union took over and the atmosphere changed such that the puck was mostly in the Yale end for the last 30 minutes (the SOG count for that period, which I think was 35-8 in favor of Union tells the story). But thankfully, Malcolm is red hot, and we cruised to a nice victory. That said, I am sure Keith is giving the guys a reaming on the way home given their malaise in the second half of the game. By the way, does anyone know when was the last time a Yale goalie had three straight shut-out performances?

If anything, that goes to show that Coach Allain has matured as a coach, realizing that his old faithful strategy doesn't always work against some teams. You'll be a force to be reckoned with, and will force other teams (that have the ability to do so) to play rock-paper-scissors on their strategy. Congrats on getting the best of us, great job sticking it to Union, and we'll see you in a couple months.

Yes, seemed like a trap was played, but will also say that you guys had a pretty intense forecheck. Every time an RPI player got the puck, someone was rushing to challenge him. I thought Yale looked very good, very fast, with a lot of very strong skaters. You are still one of the top teams to try to beat.....but we're coming for you !! Good luck, until we meet again. :).

Forecheck and cycle down low has been the trademark for the past three seasons, if they can do that and adapt to a trap for the quicker teams as needed, it will only make Yale better. Strange schedule coming up, home against UCONN, SHU at Harbor Yard then the BC game at home. I missed the first home series, so I just don't really know the team well, it seems I may have been mistaken about Yales prospects , but that Cornell game still worries me. For those who were there or saw the game on tv, what was the reason Yale was so badly beaten by Cornell?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

First of all, Cornell is much better than last year. A 4 pt weekend on the road against Harvard and Dartmouth is ample proof of that. But the reason for the lopsided score against Yale was, IMO, that Yale lost their poise. Cornell scored all of their goals off defensive breakdowns by Yale in their own end. The Cornell forecheck was strong, but Yale was remarkably careless with the puck. That game is the only one I have seen this year so I can only go by the results rather than observation but it appears that Yale fixed that problem rather quickly. I think, LT, that rather than worry about the Cornell game, we should focus on the positive of a 4 point weekend against RPI and Union; the first onethat I can remember for as long as i have been following Yale hockey. BTW, I see that BC was waxed by BU tonight 5-0. Based on their respective records, that is a score you wouldn't expect, proving that you just never know in College Hockey as there is a lot of parity.

Unfortunately, the only Yale game I've seen for far in person this year was the Cornell game.
Some observations.
1) Yale came out flying and deserved to have another early first period goal but were unlucky
2) Yale tired by the end of the first period and never regained the speed they had to begin the game.
3) Cornell's size and strength was every too apparent. On their second goal, they cycled the puck for a good 30 seconds before skating in on goal unotuched for an easy top shelf score.
4) Our goalie was awful- especially the thrid goal on an inexcusable rebound.

It looks like with better endurance, we can fix issue 2
Issue 4 appears to have been a fluke as wow, is 33 playing well now.
Issue 3 is offset with speed.

Thanks for the insight on the cornell game, I am not focused on the game, I had just not heard much about it because I was out of state. Nice highlight reel of the Union game on the ECAC site. http://www.ecachockey.com/men/video/index Otto's second goal was a cannon. Nice top shelf backhand by Brockett as well.

Doc, You have to admit North Dakota certainly makes college hockey interesting, every sport needs a villain.:D

Heading to my first regular season game tomorrow. Have no idea what to expect from UCONN.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

We followed game stats thru College Hockey Inc site so it was hard to get a feel for the game. Thru two periods it appeared Yale dominated but then allowed 2 goals in the first two minutes of the 3rd period - breaking a scoreless streak of Jeff Malcomb that stretched more than 220 minutes. What the heck happened?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

They completely dominated on a talent level, mental lapses on D allowed all three goals. UCONN was a big physical team who could not match Yales speed, but when they banged down low they scored, none of the goals were Malcolm's fault. Miller and Agostino finally woke up and O'Neil played a real scrappy game, it seemed UCONN was targeting O'Neil with high hits trying to take him out of his game, but he kept his composure well. There is a video on ECAC.com where Miller just outskates every player on the ice while getting an assist.
