Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Great news about Peel, he is an offensive threat in his own right as well, VERY hard shot.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

FYI...

There are still some standing room tickets available for tonight's Yale/Cornell game and seats available for tomorrow night's Yale/Colgate match-up.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

The players who always do the little things that never appear on the scoresheet, like handling the puck with confidence in your own end rather than giving it away repeatedly are never so missed as when they are no longer there. Which is a roundabout way of saying how much this team missed the steady hand of defensemen like Jimmy Martin and Mike Matczak tonight. But those 2 outstanding blue-liners are on to pro hockey, which means the new guys have to step up, and they clearly weren't ready to do that tonight. The defensive lapses were numerous and Cornell's ability to convert them into goals impressive. But what I found even more alarming than that was the lack of cohesion offensively. It has been stated in this forum that Yale is young, and they are in the sense that they have 9 first year players, three of whom took regular shifts tonight. But most of the offensive players are sophomores or older and played significant minutes last year. Yet, those experienced players looked less capable tonight than their track records have demonstrated. Maybe it's the fact that this team has only been practicing together since Oct 15th and this was only their 3rd game. And maybe it was an inevitable shifting of hockey karma as Cornell is far too good and proud of a hockey program to be winless against any team for so long. But for Yale, their best defense has always been a relentless attack that could control the puck for long stretches and put the opponent in a scoring deficit. That was lacking tonight. In fact it was lacking at the Ivy shoot out as well. They need to find it, and soon. Colgate is in tomorrow, and they are a better team than Cornell. An 0-2 start inECAC play at home is not what any Yale fans were envisioning to start the year

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Went to the game tonight. Cornell exacted their revenge (after last season's 6-0 ECAC Championship loss), 6-3. I thought that Kevin Peel and Antoine Laganiere had some good moments, and Yale outshot Cornell by a ratio of (roughly) 2 to 1 during the first period. However, many of those shots were blocked by Cornell's very effective defense. The game obviously meant more to Cornell, and Yale was outworked/outhustled in basically every aspect.

Malcom was awful. Yale doesn't have same firepower this year, and if they can't right the goalie situation, they could very well be a .500 team, as hard as that is to fathom.

Hahahahahaha. Cornell? Looks like Yale* is finally back to being Fale. :)

You say that like Cornell is some chump, not the runaway most successful ECAC team of the last decade. I think Yale will be fine.

er. . . 6-2 Thank You.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Thanks for the correction, 40-Year Big Red Fan. However, 6-2 is still better than 6-0:)

But friendly teasing aside, I really liked the passion of the Cornell fans last night. I only hope that Yale fans stick with their team through the lean times....

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

I agree the defense needs to step up, but I actually thought the three youngest defensemen on the team played the best last night. Many Cornell chances and, ultimately, goals were due to mistakes made by some of the upperclassmen. I also do not think this team has the same relentless attitude on the forecheck and backcheck as they did last year. Although a 1-1-1 start is not ideal, I think this team will be fine in the long run and should make a run at league titles (and hopefully beyond).

Really not fair to blame Malcolm. The defensive breakdowns in front of him made for a tough night. He had no chance on the first two goals. I could fault him partially for goals 4 and 5 but lets give him a chance to grow into the job.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

A solid defensive effort tonight. Yale completely suffocated Colgate's offense (despite being outshot), and delivered some hard hits as well. I'm just waiting for our offense to click. It would be really lovely to have a Sean Backman/Broc Little-caliber sniper in the lineup (Brian O'Neill hasn't looked great thus far).

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Couldn't make the game tonight. The article on the Yale athletics website said that despite being out-shot Yale had the better quality chances. Yet, they only scored 2 goals (4th consecutive game) Was the lack of goals a result of an inability to finish or was it Mihalik?

I think it was largely an inability to finish. I felt like Yale shot a lot of pucks into traffic instead of going to the net. I think that Andrew Miller is trying to shoot the puck more frequently, but he is more of a passer/playmaker, and seemed out of his element at moments. Mihalik did have some good saves, though. It's interesting to note that Yale was also outshot during their win against Princeton. It seems as though they have opted to play a tighter, more defensive style of hockey until their offense clicks.

Sidebar: The first 2 games of this season have looked a lot like the first 2 games of the 2007-2008 season -which featured a very green Class of 2011 - and in which a blowout was followed by a shutout.

Any idea why Ziegler was out? Hurt? Hurt badly? Not hurt? This is where Allain's tight lips get a little frustrating even to fans.

The scuttlebutt is that after a hit he initiated in the Cornell game he was asked how he felt and stated that he had a slight headache but otherwise felt fine. He was given and passed the concussion exam either that evening or Saturday morning (or both), but there is a now zero tolerance for any suggestion of concussion symptoms so he was not cleared to play by the medical staff.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Hello fans of Yale Hockey-

I just wanted to quickly touch base with you in regards to the Goals For Good project. In short, it's a competitive goal-a-thon between every team in the ECAC, and every team has partnered with a charity in close relation to their team, school, and or community. We're currently looking for more prizes, but as of now, there is $1,000 on the line going to the local food cupboard of the team that raises the most money. Please check out www.goalsforgood.org to learn more and support your team and their charity by way of their goals and wins.

Thank you,
Kevin McNamara
