Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

I would be shocked if Dueck was indeed a healthy scratch this past weekend. He has been a solid defenseman this season , even if the Dartmouth game wasnt his best.
I know Coach likes to do some crazy things, but sitting a solid junior defenseman for a freshman playing in his first game is way out there.

Yeah, they played Ward as a dman...no way Dueck was healthy.

Regardless though, Yale has watched up well with Princeton this season. If they can contain Princeton's top line with Calof I can't imagine how Princeton could take a three-game series from Yale.

I have an apology to make. The blog I quoted was from last season. I erroneously did not look at the date when searching for info for Dueck on Google. Post has been deleted.

A source tells me that Dueck has been out with an injury and his status for this weekend is not known at this time.

Brian O'Neil has been named the 2012 Ivy League Player of the Year

Men's Ice Hockey All-Ivy -- 2012

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Yale senior forward Brian O'Neill has been named the 2012 Ivy League Men's Ice Hockey Player of the year, as selected by the League's six head coaches. The senior captain and Hobey Baker Candidate has been an offensive force for the Bulldogs this season and leads the squad into the ECAC Tournament that begins this weekend as the sixth seed.

O'Neill (Yardley, Pa.) becomes the eighth Bulldog to be named the Ivy League Player of the Year and Yale has had two of the past three winners as Sean Backman earned the honor in 2010. On the season, O'Neill has 19 goals and 21 assists to lead all Ivy League scorers with 40 points. In ten Ivy games, O'Neill led the League with 21 points on seven goals and 14 assists.

O'Neill continues to climb over some old Bulldogs and former NHL players on the school's career lists. He is now fourth in points (157), fourth in assists (90) and seventh in goals (67) on the Yale career charts. O'Neill ranks sixth in the nation and second in the ECAC (.68) in goals per game this year, he is eighth (1.38) in points. O'Neill was a honorable mention All-Ivy selection last season.

Cornell freshman forward Brian Ferlin (Jacksonville, Fla.) was voted the 2012 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Big Red player to earn the honor since 2008 when Riley Nash earned the honor. He is the seventh Cornell player to earn the award since it was first bestowed in 1980.

Ferlin was third in Ivy League scoring with five goals and eight assists for 13 points in 10 games. Those totals also led Ivy League rookies across the board. Ferlin is tied for second on the team in overall assists (13) and points (21). He also ranks second on the team with a plus-15 rating. He also has eight goals on the year, including a power-play tally and a game-winning goal.

O'Neill, a unanimous All-Ivy first-team selection, is joined on the first line by Harvard senior Alex Killorn (Montreal, Quebec), who was also a unanimous selection, and Brown senior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, Alberta).

Killorn has an even 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 points entering ECAC Tournament play, the second-highest total amongst Ivy League skaters. In 10 Ivy games played this season, Killorn scored a League-best eight goals and added four assists. Killorn was a second team All-Ivy honoree as a junior.

Maclellan has 15 goals and 14 assists for 29 points this season, tied for fifth-most amongst Ivy League players. In Ivy games only, he scored five goals and added four assists for nine points. Maclelland, a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award finalist, leads the Bears in goals, assists, points, power-play goals (8), short-handed goals (2) and game-winning goals (4). He has 100 career points entering postseason play on 46 goals and 54 assists.

Juniors Danny Biega (Montreal, Quebec) of Harvard and Michael Sdao (Niwot, Colo.) of Princeton earned first-team All-Ivy honors on defense, with Biega doing so in unanimous fashion. It also marked Biega's second straight appearance on the All-Ivy first team.

Beiga is Harvard's second-leading scorer on the year with eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points. The Carolina Hurricanes product leads the Crimson in assists, and in 10 Ivy games played he has recorded three goals and 11 assists for 14 points, which is the second-highest point total in the League. Sdao has 18 points on the year on eight goals and 10 assists, including three power-play goals. The Ottawa draft pick has three goals and seven assists in 10 Ivy games played this year.

Cornell goaltender Andy Iles (Ithaca, N.Y.) got the nod in net for the All-Ivy first team. The sophomore posted a 15-7-7 record in regular-season play to go along with a 2.12 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. In Ivy games only, Iles has posted a League-best 2.26 goals against average. With then senior Ben Scrivens earning first team All-Ivy honors in 2010, the Big Red have two of the last three All-Ivy first team goaltenders.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Some great info from Chip Malafronte's blog

No bye, no problem for Yale
A couple of notes from Yale's practice this afternoon...

A strong finish has been the result of several factors, Yale coach Keith Allain said, but special teams and goaltending has been at the top of the list. The Bulldogs have seven power-play goals over the past four games, three each against Dartmouth and Harvard, while junior Nick Maricic has found the groove in net.

Maricic will start Game 1 of the best-of-3 series with Princeton on Friday.

Allain seems to have found the right combination of lines, which has resulted in more quality chances and more goals. "That's had a lot to do with the turnaround the last couple of weeks," senior Brian O'Neill said. "I think we were getting stale with the lines. To get some new life in the lines really gives everyone an extra spark for the second half of the season. I think that was a great move by Coach and he's seeing the benefits of that."

Allain said finishing shots has been a big difference, though the chemistry between the top three lines has been effective. "I like Andrew (Miller) with Kenny (Agostino)," Allain said. "I think they see things the same way, and I think Anthony Day has gotten better on the right side with those two. Having Lags (Antoine Laganiere) with Brian gives him some size, a guy whose dogging the puck. (Jesse) Root is just a smart player all over the ice, so I like that combination. And the Limbo (Kevin Limbert) line has been more or less consistent all year long, so those three lines we feel pretty good about right now."

Root has seen his production rise centering a line with O'Neill and Antoine Laganiere, but Allain has been impressed with his play all season. "He's a heck of a hockey player," Allain said. "If you were trying to think who's the most underrated guy on our team is, he'd be someone to come to my mind pretty quickly."

Yale still can't be classified as healthy, but Allain said the situation is better than last Saturday when injuries to Colin Dueck and Bennett Carroccio forced the Bulldogs to use freshman forward Alex Ward -- who hadn't seen the ice all season -- as a defenseman. No one has been ruled out for Friday as of yet, though Allain said he's still not 100 percent sure.

The last three seasons, not only have the Bulldogs enjoyed a first-round bye but also had the luxury of knowing an NCAA berth was in the bag regardless of what happened in the ECAC playoffs. This season, things are different. Yale can't make the NCAAs unless it wins a championship. O'Neill said the team mentality remains the same. "There's always pressure to win this tournament because that's the expectation," O'Neill said. "I don't know if there's added pressure. We're playing for our lives here, so that gives a little extra excitement for us. I think everyone will use that as motivation to keep playing."

O'Neill has been named the Ivy League player of the year.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Good but not great game by Yale tonight. They dominated the first period and it showed on the scoreboard and the shots taken. They took too many dumb penalties in the second, which set the pace for the rest of the game. They actually tired themselves out with the killing of 4 out of 5 penalties in the second and were lucky to escape the period with the lead. They forechecked very well in the third . They also did a great job of clogging the passing lanes. Both goalies played outstanding games, with Maricic getting number one star. The score may have been a little more lopsided if not for Yale hitting 4 posts in one game. O'Neill , Day and Langanierre were great, the defense was servicable, except for the lapse on the second PU goal Dueck played all of his regular shifts. Yale needs to put Princeton away tomorrow, they let them hang around too long tonight and you could sense that Princeton was gaining confidence and had a shot at Yale if the bounces went their way.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

I completely agree. I had the feeling in the 3rd period that I can't believe Princeton is still in this game. I had hoped that Yale was past the dumb penalty stage, but clearly they aren't. A more talented offensive team would have beaten Yale tonight. On the other hand, Yale was the only home team to win tonight in the ECAC playoffs, so maybe we shouldn't be too hard on them.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Will Princeton player Hagel's 5 minute major penalty keep him off the ice tonight? I understand Princeton was two players short last night due to injuries - will this mean they'll be short a third tonight (presuming that the others didn't get healthy overnight)?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

According to the recap on the ECAC website Hagel is eligible to play. Only a misconduct.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Nice comeback by Yale after 2 1/2 periods of skating in a fog, thought they had the momentum in OT. Gus Young caught completely flatfooted on the winning goal. Should be a good one tonight.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

It's nice to see your coach his "humble" self after the P'ton win. Geesh, when is that man going to develop some class?

The bigger issue is that they were in a fog for 2 1/2 periods. They had no jump, which is amazing for a team at home trying to close out an inferior team and redeem a disappointing season. The play in OT was like a train wreck in slow motion. I could see it developing and I was thinking, surely the Yale D is going to close off the middle of the ice, but they never did. And Maricic crashed back to earth last night. Not all of the goals were his fault, but his penchant for leaving rebounds cost him on two of the goals. He sees the puck well, but he doesn't catch it when the shots are up, and the Yale D is not good enough at clearing the crease so easy put backs result. Hopefully Yale is the more desperate team tonight and their play reflects it.

Young wasn't even on the ice. It was two other defenseman. Jasko and Young were swtched off the ice after the second faceoff in overtime down in the Princeton end.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Good comeback by Yale but disturbing that they could not play with that fight the whole game. Three goals resulted off face-offs (2 in the D-zone and the last goal was directly off a lost offensive zone face-off). The kid Calof is a sneaky little player, reminds me of miller. Has a burst of speed too as he flew by Dueck (not Young) for the last goal. Granted, you cannot fault Dueck there as all three forwards got caught down low and the Princeton forwards had a full head of steam.

Hopefully they can play desperate and with that fight they showed the whole game. When they pay 5 on 5 and get the puck in Princeton's zone, they dominate. They just have to be willing to win battles in order to get the puck in deep (something they show they can do, just do not show it consistently).

I agree. They pretty much lost those battles down low all night. They were a step slow to the puck consistently. I believe the team that imposes its will at the beginning of the game usually wins and Princeton was that team last night.

Could have sworn it was Young out there. I was actually surprised to see him even out there after the injury he sustained. It was a funny bounce that popped out of the zone, but those D-Men got beat hands down. Does anyone know if the first shot went in or was the putback the winner?

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Congrats to the Bulldogs for a very well played game and advancing to the quarterfinals. You never know which Yale team will show up this year on a given night. Tonight we got the goodYale team that forechecks relentlessly, scores in bursts, and plays just well enough defensively to maintain the lead.

Some observations: 1) Laganierre's shot must come off his stick at a spot where Bonar can't see it because the Princeton goalie couldn't solve him all weekend. 2) Anthony Day is a heck ofa player and has become a force to be reckoned with. 3) Kevin Peel has a tremendous poke check-he was stripping Princeton players of the puck all night. 4) Andrew Miller took charge of his line tonight. His leadership was evident and effective. 5) Wonder why Malcolm got the start? Was it simply a case of 3 games in 3 nights being too much, or was it due to Maricic's play on Saturday?

And one final observation. The officiating tonight was epic-ly bad. I have seen some poor work on the part of the officials in my six years of regularly attending Yale games, but tonight was hands down the worst. At one point in the second period, the officials appeared to warn both benches when the play got particularly chippy, but then they called next to nothing for the rest of the period, and there were many instances where penalties could have been called. If you're going to warn the benches, you have to follow through with policing the game. Their failure to do so, was evidence of their incompetence.

Looking at the next round, I think Yale got a very favorable match up. Harvard is a good team, but they play a style that is conducive to Yale being able to run their offense the way they need to to be successful. And given the up and down nature of the Bulldogs' play this year, its good that their hated rivals are the next opponent.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

Just read the game summary on the Yale website and got my answer on the goalie decision. Allain said that goalies in this league aren't used to playing 3 consecutive nights. I would assume that Maricic will get the start at Harvard on Friday.

Re: Yale Bulldogs Hockey 2011 -2012

I think you guys are too hard on the Yale Defense as you said the Yale D played just well enough to maintain lead. Due to the offensive nature of the team (relentless attack, aggressive forecheck, offensive creativity), the d-core has to play against more odd-man rushes/ outnumbered situations than I have ever seen. I went to last two game, and of the 8 goals scored.. I know 4 maybe 5 were forwards fault (due to poor bad check or sloppy defensive coverage) and some of the others, were PP goals.

*The announcers on the game said it, but I thought Young and Peel were spectacular on defense and then Lags, Day, O'niell, and Root were fantastic on offense.

I am very excited about the matchup against yale as I think our quick style matches well against there "trap" style.
