It was interesting that my impression was that England kind of tightened up to surround the box, and just let Mexico in. Never really ventured far out to keep the gaps as tight as they could. Pretty disciplined to do that, but it only allowed crosser attempts instead of someone finding a gap to squeeze through.

And in spite of all of the constant pressure, just kept it up. Indeed, a well played match.

Other than 3 min (two consecutive) Mexico played well, too. But those defensive breakdowns killed them, especially the one that lead to the PK penalty.
 
Kind of tightened? The last 20 minutes, England routinely had 9 or 10 players in their own box. They gave Mexico all the chances in the world to find a gap - and they couldn't. During one stretch, the announcers said that Mexico had like 85% of the possession for 10 minutes straight. Really a pretty bold strategy by England - and it worked. If that own goal had gone in, though, and England ended up winning, the howling would have been epic....

I didn't notice how far out they were defending at the beginning, but I don't recall that Mexico had a lot of space to start with. So I thought it wasn't a massive change from the start of the game- enough to deal with one less player and maintain no space to get through with the ball.

US Soccer threatened to go to Court of Arbitration for Sport.

According to the source, U.S. Soccer presented to FIFA the prospect of bringing in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which acts as the supreme global judiciary for athletic disputes. CAS law is applied in sports cases that require a legal resolution.

CAS gets involved in cases such as doping violations, match fixing, corruption and on-field violence, among other issues.

“A legal appeal was sent to FIFA,’’ the source said. “They wanted to avoid CAS. The CAS legal was ready to go.’’

In the end, the Balogun case never reached any legal stage as FIFA and its disciplinary committee made its ruling, because FIFA blinked … and made the correct decision.

According to VAR guidelines, slow-motion replay should be used only to identify the exact point of contact on a potential foul. But in the Balogun case, officials used it to determine intent and severity, ignoring that Balogun was simply planting his foot awkwardly in mid-stride while focused on the ball.

Kind of confirms the rumors that had been swirling that US Soccer had presented an appeal that centered on the VAR protocol being violated and that Dump and the White House had minimal involvement.
 
In a bit of “those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”, it’s being reported that PM Keir Starmer got involved in the England-Mexico kick off time kerfluffle. Starmer reportedly told the FA that they were to not accept any change of the scheduled kick off time.

Of course he did nothing other than tie himself to something positive that someone else did. He does nothing but takes credit for anything.
 
Maybe this was the technically right thing to do but it's just going to leave a stain in the minds of millions of non-U.S. fans.

I think they should sit him for the first half at least to calm some of the outrage if not outright sit him period, which I know they won't do.

It's funny to hear MAGA defend this as if some incredible injustice has been righted or that every country is just as corrupt as we are. Remind me again how many other leaders have been awarded a shiny piece of plastic and a golden medallion to placate their wounded egos?

The self-loathing from half of America over an event that Trump genuinely has little control over the outcome of is truly something though.

I would play him if the reinstatement was legitimate corruption. But this was political corruption from the orange shit stain. That's why it's wrong.

But it's not cheating. It was "cheating" that he got a red card in the first place. The appeal was to correct that mistake.

Not sure why that's such a big deal. Any other country would have done the same. Remember, CR7 got to play on the same kind of appeal, when his ban was 3 games instead of one.
