World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

Ah yes... Let's require all "pro" soccer venues to look like a Marlin's game...
That’s the standard specifically for a Division 1 team. The USL in the process of creating a D1 league as part of the promotion/relegation process.

For reference, a Division 2 team, of which the USL Championship is currently, is required to have a minimum capacity of 5,000 seats.

A Division 3 team is required to have 1,000 seat capacity.

Edit for reference: In MLS, currently the only D1 league in the US, only one team had an average below 15k last season (or even 18k) and that was Colorado.

FC Dallas’ stadium is currently restricted to 11k but that’s because of construction on a new roof.

As mentioned in another thread, we’re looking getting a few qualifiers from Asia this week.

And we have one already as Japan beat Bahrain 2-0 to qualify.

Iran can qualify today as well but their match hasn’t kicked off yet.

South Korea can qualify in the next game.

US loses to Panama 1-0 at the Nations League Finals.

So, they changed the coach and still got the same result.

At least Berhalter had the excuse of being a man down for 60 minutes.

Maybe it's the players...

On another note, we'll have another qualifier in a few hours (2am ET) as New Zealand plays New Caledonia for the Oceania spot, loser will go to the playoffs.

Weirdly, we could have 3-4 qualifiers (Iran and Argentina can qualify with wins in their next games) by the end of this window and UEFA doesn't even start qualifying until September (and CONCACAF won't start their final round until September as well).

Saw this on another forum and it about sums it up:

"This US team is difficult to like. And I don't just mean that they are not playing well. It is led by diva players who think their shit does not stink, and it is annoying to watch."

We have another qualifier as New Zealand beats New Caledonia 3-0 to book a spot.

New Caledonia is the first team in the Interconfederational Playoffs.

And one confederation (Oceania) has completed their qualifying before one confederation (UEFA) has even started.

And we have the final qualifiers from this window as Iran qualified with a draw with Uzbekistan and Argentina has qualified with a 4-1 win over Brazil.

Currently qualified teams:
USA
Canada
Mexico
Japan
New Zealand
Iran
Argentina

The Premier League will have five teams in the Champions League next season after it secured one of the extra places for performance by clubs across the three European competitions.

Two leagues will be rewarded with a European Performance Spot (EPS), which was introduced in last season as part of a revamp to expand the Champions League to a 36-team competition.

England has been well out in front at the top of the table for most of the season, and the extra place was all but confirmed by a catalogue of poor results for Italian clubs in the knockout playoff round and the round of 16.

US will host the 2031 Women's World Cup. It will also feature an expanded 48-team field to match the men's.
Oh boy....as big of a difference as there is between Men's #1 and Men's #48 (and really, significantly lower than that) , that is NOTHING compared to the gap between women's #1 and #48. If they're going to 48, it should at least come with mercy rule.

Yeah, we’re already looking at the real possibility of blowouts in 2026 with the men.

I mean, look at some of the scores in Women’s qualifying. Spain had a +53 goal difference in their qualifying group, England had +80!

TBF, the US might not exist by 2031 so who knows if the tournament even happens here.

Plus, if the US blows up there might be a few more competitive teams.

Yeah, can’t say I understand it. I guess it gets money to nations that wouldn’t get anything, but it’s diluting the amount the usual teams get.

North America is really two deep with a couple countries that can be competitive parking the bus. Asia has about four or five and then a significant drop off. CONMEBOL is Brazil and some up and coming teams. Really Europe is the only deep confederation, but their qualification is spread so far that as jim said, it’ll just be them winning 10-0 and essentially auto qualifying.

Oh - I didn't even think about that....48 teams with GD used in any tiebreaker is the exact opposite of a mercy rule. The group stage is going to be horrifying.

Yeah there’s a reason why every Confederation besides UEFA uses a tournament for WWC qualifiers (well two, money is another). It’s to reduce the amount of awful blowouts there would be.

Think about how bad that US-Thailand game in 2019 was. Now imagine one of those in every group.
