World Soccer XXXI: Golden Generation?

Mexico goes out on a scoreless draw. Needed a win since Ecuador beat them on goal differential.

And Venezuela moves to a surprising 3-0, though they were the favorites tonight.
Canada goes 1-1-1 with 1 GF, 2 GA, -1 GD and advances.

Mexico goes 1-1-1 with 1 GF, 1 GA, 0 GD and is eliminated.

Tournaments are weird.

I've heard not great things about this referee and he's showing it already. Missed two pretty clear "Stopping Promising Attack" yellows against Uruguay, gives the US a yellow on what should've been a foul on Uruguay.

This half has been the worst officiated half of an international match I've seen in years. This guy will continue to get assignments in CONMEBOL but he's toast internationally.

At least TPTB put a veteran referee in charge of this key game.

His first Copa America game. Seventh international match.

Well, I guess that was onside after seeing the photo. But it sure didn’t look like it since they’re apparently using the cameras perched in the camera wells the Chiefs use for their all-22 film.

Well, it probably is time to move on from Berhalter. Granted, I don’t think there’s any realistic replacements that will be significantly better.

I don’t know what needs to happen one way or the other, but he did not look like a man confident he’ll have a job tomorrow. Lotta stress on camera the last five minutes when they cut to him.

No matter the choice, the vast majority of the social media fanbase will be unhappy again in six months.

Realistic replacement options are really only MLS coaches. To get some big name coach would require some benefactor(s) to pony up the cash, which would raise some serious ethical questions.

I can never understand US Soccer online fandom and their whiplash inducing, flip flopping takes. Months ago these people were berating Berhalter for not starting Pepi over Balogun and now they’re up arms over Berhalter putting in Pepi over Sargent and Wright (the same Haji Wright they didn’t want on the roster!).

I mean ok, Berhalter didn’t get the results and it’s time to move on. Got it. I just feel like all of these people are going to be expecting US Soccer to hire someone like Klopp or Pochettino or Martinez and then be up arms again after someone like Cherundolo is hired because a) US Soccer can’t afford to hire someone of that level (for various reasons) and b) the USMNT job isn’t actually a very desirable position so most coaches of that level don’t want to be anywhere near it.

Granted, I don’t think even a high level coach can fix the fact that most of our “talent” is a bunch of overrated backup players.

Edit: To add the thoughts of a post I saw on a different forum:
The other issue is… like 95% of US fans just have no idea what good players or good teams look like, because they only watch the US and blindly believe the propaganda from American outlets.

Looking at the starting lineup last night:

Turner - bench player for a bad EPL team
Scally - starter for a bad-to-mediocre Bundesliga team
Richards - starter for a mediocre EPL team
Ream - long time starter but benched end of season by a bad-to-mediocre EPL team
Robinson - starter for a bad-to-mediocre EPL team
Adams - injured all season
McKennie - played a lot for Juventus, but the two guys ahead of him were suspended for the season. His playing time wasn’t fully earned.
Reyna - bench player for bad EPL team.
Weah - bench player for Juventus
Balogun - bench player for decent-to-good French team
Pulisic - starter for Milan

If these guys weren’t American, and instead they were from Northern Ireland and played for the same teams, American fans would completely dismissed them as ‘mid’. The talent isn’t as good as people think.
