We reached a notable milestone yesterday:

2026 World Cup Qualifying started yesterday in South America.

Argentina beat Ecuador, Colombia beat Venezuela, and Peru and Paraguay drew.

Wow - I didn't realize any groups started qualifying 3 years out.
I didn’t either. I only saw the highlight of the Messi goal, saw “World Cup Qualifying” and was like “WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot?”

Seems CONMEBOL got started early.

They play a true 18 game home/home Round Robin don't they? At two games per International break, that's 9 breaks. With just 4 breaks per year, it makes sense that they are getting going already.

Yeah, usually it can be tightened up a bit by playing in the summer but Copa America is next year and who knows what’s going on in 2025.

Still, strange it started in September instead of the November window.

Germany removed Hansi Flick as coach of the men’s national soccer team on Sunday, one day after a 4-1 loss to Japan deepened the gloom around the squad ahead of hosting next year’s European Championship.

Germany hasn’t won any of its last five games and was eliminated in the group stage at last year’s World Cup.

Hugo Perez, the American manager of El Salvador, has been fired as the manager of El Salvador. Kind of an obvious result of not having won a game in over a year.

And plenty of people were pumping him up to be the USMNT manager.

You think El Salvador sucks because of their manager?

Side note, i know nothing about him.

The manager clearly isn’t helping.

People were pumping him up as a USMNT manager candidate despite the fact that his lone managerial work was with El Salvador.

The losses include away to Nicaragua, Martinique at the Gold Cup, away to Guatemala and at home to Trinidad and Tobago. They haven’t won a game since June 2022 when they beat Grenada. They’re a bog standard CONCACAF country that has clearly gone down.

Speaking of managers on the hot seat:

Jurgen Klinsmann is under fire as manager of South Korea. Not terribly surprising considering that they’ve yet to win a game under him, including a draw at home against El Salvador.

You mean the same El Salvador which just fired their manager for not winning a game? That's some circle jerk suckiness there...

So the USMNT beat Uzbekistan and Oman in friendlies, Uzbekistan 3-0 and Oman 4-0.

People were unhappy about the Uzbekistan result (in fairness the US didn’t have a good game) but that same Uzbekistan team just drew Mexico 3-3.

Seattle Sounders announce a new “branding”.

They’re not changing the name or anything, just an update for the 50th anniversary. It’s typical corporate stuff. The important bit is this sweet secondary logo:
