I thought "ultra" was European for "fan."

So, all hooligans are ultras but not are ultras are hooligans.

But I could be wrong.

I'm gonna as a question as a dumb American:

What is the connotation difference between "Ultra" and "Supporter". It seems that the term Ultra is applied to fans that seem to embrace hooliganism and violence/racism. Yet these groups seem to use the term openly towards themselves, so I'm a bit confused at to what the term actually means.

Edit to add: Ultras also seem to be an Eastern European thing.
Ultras is more from Italy, they’re analogous to supporters groups here in the US. The level of organization is the big difference, there’s memberships, a leadership hierarchy, and even stuff like fundraising and merchandising. Some groups have embraced the hooliganism side of things, some are just so fanatical they’re prone to do stupid stuff and others completely abhor violence.

There are official fan clubs for American teams that are run like this, too. I find it really off-putting but in some cases I guess it's traditional. Those ethnic-linked soccer teams in the northeast are like that. They actually used to be tried to political patronage and/or companies, too. Some really creepy stuff.

A lot of Supporters Groups in MLS are registered nonprofits, I know ECS and the Timbers Army are, and a lot of them have some sort of relationship with the team whether it’s just having a designated seating section to things like ticket deals and funding. It’s not anything new either, DC, KC and the Galaxy have groups dating back to the 90’s that have had various forms of relationships with the teams.

Big win against Brighton. Win at home on Monday against Leicester and guarantee a spot in the CL.

Just need a point now that the gunners drew.

mookie would be tempted to head to Michigan and have a drink with his fellow fan if he was in the states. She and mookie have suffered a lot these past many years :-)

Vini Jr was subjected to racial abuse from the Valencia fans (they serenaded him with "Vinicius, you are a monkey" when he arrived at the stadium), had a second ball kicked at him when he was breaking in on goal, was placed in a chokehold during the ensuing scuffle and was somehow the only player punished. He received a red card and was sent off. After the game, the president of La Liga issued a statement... blaming Vini. La Liga is an embarrassment.

There's a reason the saying "It's not football, it's LaLiga!" exists.

He has now posted a video compilation of racist incidents from this season.

How the heck is Chelsea in 12th? Is that what happens when your owner is Russian now?

If Fulham can lose at ManU by fewer than 3 they will have a positive goal differential in the first tier for the 4th time in the last 75 years.

You are behind the times by quite a bit. Chelsea is owned by an American and consortium.

I know Roman got pushed out, but my point is did that dry up the money and now Chelsea is going to go back to sucking like it did for its first 100 years?

Are the big six now the fab five?

No, this happens, especially with Chelsea. They once went 1st, 12th, 1st in three seasons.
