So, unless Canada pulls off an upset, CONCACAF is looking to go winless this first round of games.

Not ideal, but also not terribly surprising (which I know isn't what you're saying). Next round is another rough set up matchups - england v us, mexico v argentina. I suppose Croatia and Canada could be interesting, and five hours ago I would have said CR and Japan would be interesting. But I think we have to wait until the last round where US v IRan, KSA v Mexico, and Canada v Morocco are the most favorable set of matchups. Which again, isn't ideal if you're looking for multiple CONCACAF teams to advance.

On the one hand, it's frustrating to see players, fans and journalists who won't take a stand. Especially in the wake of the potentially fatal refusal of the Iranian players to sing the National Anthem before their match or people like Grant Wahl

On the other, the lessons of Jamal Khashoggi were learned. Toe the line or you will end up on the business end of a bone saw. No one will protect you. No one will avenge your murder either. It will be quickly forgotten as the West thirsts for more cheap oil. And it was learned by those dictators. too. Kill whomever you want, the worst that will happen is you'll get a fist bump from the American president when he comes begging for increased oil production.
It’s an Athletic article so I won’t link it but, Denmark is apparently trying to organize a blanket withdrawal of the UEFA after the armband row.

Withdrawal from this WC? Seems pretty unlikely. The FAs like money too.
The governments will get involved too.

France is already has the Qataris balls deep with PSG, BeIn, and a bunch of other stuff so they’re not going anywhere.

Germany needs a new gas supplier and Qatar is really their only option so they’re staying.

The UK is run by morons so they’re not going anywhere.

Spain and Portugal don’t fucking care.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s happening.

I don’t have an Athletic sub so I couldn’t read the article, but the summary tweet was ambiguous. Is it an exit from the World Cup or an exit from FIFA entirely following the World Cup?

Ok, two observations.

1. I see Belgium's GK likes to stand behind the line during penalties like I do. I was once fucked over by a ref who waited for me to save a PK and give the other team a re-kick before telling me I was behind the line. Absolute bush league move, especially for the league we were in. My entire team was yelling at him after that. Deservedly so. Anyways, cool to see other GKs do the same.

2. Are they allowed to be behind the goal line now?

This referee crew is done for the tournament. AR just called offside on Canada after a pretty obvious Belgian pass back.

Real basic AR stuff and the dude fucked it up. At the World Cup that’s unacceptable.

No.

The defending goalkeeper must remain on the goal line, facing the kicker, between the goalposts, without touching the goalposts, crossbar or goal net, until the ball has been kicked.

It probably should’ve been reviewed.

Yikes. That's something we knew well back in grade 8.
