World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

I like the idea of pro/rel only because that has been the tradition of the sport internationally and because, it being unfamiliar to me, I still think it's neat.

Do European hockey leagues do pro/rel?
Some do, Finland, Sweden, the Swiss league, some don't, the KHL, Germany.

I like the concept of it but the reality of competition and business with sport in this age just makes it not worth it to me.

Definitely in Sweden. The Swedish team I'm a fan of (Växjö Lakers) started in the 6th division in 1997, were up to the second level HockeyAllsvenskan by the winter/spring of 2005 when I studied there and went to a bunch of games. They finally got promoted to Elitserian (now known as the Swedish Hockey League) 5 seasons ago. Last season they won their first Swedish Championship (which is determined by a playoff). As an aside, Swedish hockey teams have supporters club with scarves, tifos, and constant chanting/singing just like soccer teams.

This is going to be a very long year. :(

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

No, like most other things, they lucked into it. Via two posts and missed balk out of bounds.

There was also a missed handball that would have been a PK and most likely a red card. But, that's neither here nor there. I had a chance to hold the cup last night.

Every few years a lesser team rides a wave of luck to an MLS Cup. This time it just happened to be Portland.

This is just making the pitchforks sharper in Seattle. I just can't stand those in the fanbase going "MLS Cup doesn't mean too much, the Supporters Shield is the measure of a true champion."

Who expected people from Portland to ever apply themselves and succeed at something?

You have clearly never been to Portland.

They are weird, but they are maniacally weird. There's nobody anywhere more motivated -- it's just the thing they're motivated to project is being unmotivated. :-)

I'm very happy for the Timbers' fans. They're fantastic, and my 5 years in that (awful) building gives me an appreciation of their happiness.

I hope the Willamette floods.

(Yes, I know I'm salty right now. I don't care.)

PGE (or whatever it's called this week) is significantly above sea level. All you're doing is taking out Golden Girls in Drag.

Now, a landslide off the West Hills and you're talkin' about some serious damage to the pitch, not to mention some folks too precious even by my lax standards. :)

The *box where the Timbers play has a creek running underneath and is prone to flooding.

Tring to get me to care about Portland is a losing battle. There's one thing I like about Portland: leaving.

That creek is coming from the hills, not the river.

If you create a Kickstarter for burning down the Timbers stadium I'll contribute as will every Timbers fan. It's the worst facility I have ever watched a sporting event in, which includes my intramural high school indoor soccer pitch and, slightly less professional, Starr Rink.

Yeah the Timbers fans won't contribute.

The guy Stadium Journey scraped up to review the place REALLY liked it.

Of course, the reviews there are merely one person's opinion of game, and are frequently preposterous. I'm a stadium geek, so I mainly look at the site because there's a lot of pictures of a lot of venues around the world.

The more I watch the Eridivisie the more I understand why the Dutch national team plays such a physical brand of football compared to so many other national teams.

The fans are fantastic, so if he's grading on the fan experience I can understand the kudos. Plus there are bars and micros within wobbling distance.

But as a structure it's unbelievably drab. And nothing says excitement like having the YMCA and a health and fitness barn literally overlooking the pitch to the east. Place is a pit, nobody's going to miss it when it goes. It's even worse for baseball.

However, it does hold a really weird historical trivia: IINM they did the 1932 US ski jumping trials there, with snow carted down from Timberline lodge. Why I'll never know, but there are wild photographs of a jerry-rigged ramp looking like a roller coaster built right behind the Rockpile where the light rail runs now.

Schedule for Copa America was released today... I'm content with what Chicago is getting from this... The USA match on June 7th is the highlight, but a semi-final is nothing to scoff at...

There's some gamesmanship with the schedule, too. A4 has to go from Orlando to Pasadena before playing the U.S. in Philly. Meanwhile the U.S. makes a strict West-East jaunt. All 3 Mexico games are in the Southwest, but Argentina goes from California to Chicago then back to Seattle.
