Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Because its apples and oranges to compare the NFL, a private business in the US, to FIFA, a worldwide governing body for a sport.

And the NFL is not immune to accusations of fixing and corruption.

The NFL is not, I cannot disagree. However, you can't deny that FIFA/etc is less immune than the NFL. FIFA/IOC are basically competing to see who can be the MOST corrupt right now. And then you have the diving in soccer, which is well documented and detailed. You kidding me? I used to like watching World Cup in the mid to late 90s. No more. It's embarrassing.

Looks to be about over. This could be the worst managed game I've ever seen. You should never need to hand out 13 cards.

Diving is part of the game, just like in hockey, just like basketball, and isn't far off from going out on 3rd and 4 and drawing an offside penalty to be honest.

You don't wanna watch it, fine. But keep it to yourself and out of the thread. I don't expect you to explain your love of the NFL and why you keep watching despite the crap they pull (have fun paying for that shiny new Vikings Stadium)

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Geiger ends the game without letting Panama get the ball thrown in after the ball boy was late giving it to them. Then Panama rushed him after the game, had to get taken off by 12 security guards. Geiger is gonna have to work to get back to the WC. Just awful tonight, players and officials.

I hate the Vikes' stadium deal. With a passion.

I want to like soccer. Like I said, I used to watch. But the bastardization of the game is so outlandish now, yet people still defend it. How? Diving should NOT be part of the game (and I say the same of hockey; but at least they are trying to get rid of it). It amazes me that such statements are made: "Diving is part of the game..." Your words. Those words should never be possible.

i admit that I have not watched the game because I don't get fs2 but who's fault is it that there are 13 cards? You're not suppose to call stuff that happens? I did see the video of the 2 penalties and i don't really know the exact rule on that handball, but the red card (first if there were more) seemed somewhat legit, definitely a card, seemed like there was intent.

Obviously I didn't watch, but sometimes, there are games where a crapload of penalties are warranted. It happens.

It's punished about as best as you can. You'll never get it out of the game. Same in hockey as well. It's like being upset at the amount of holding in the NFL, no matter how much you call it, it will still exist.

I get it, you don't like the game. That's fine, I don't care. But it still doesn't excuse you coming in here and berating us for our love of the game. I don't have explain myself so why ask?

I'm just asking when will you all stand up and start shouting? I really haven't seen it. Enough to make a difference, anyway. And if you shouted the loudest, would they change? That's another point. And I DID like the game...until it became this monstrosity.

Because at the end of the day, there really isn't anything we can do. As long as "one nation, one vote" continues nothing can change. If we attempt to change things, it's the imperialists of the first world imposing their will on the third world. To a vast majority of the world corruption, even petty corruption, is par for the course. Get the US out of FIFA and the game here is completely destroyed.

Which is so hysterical it makes me crazy, since we basically don't give a sh* about soccer.
Keep telling yourself that, there's plenty of us that do. It's a worn out trope. This country cares about soccer about as much as hockey.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

And for those wondering, yes there is meaningless third place game on Saturday. I for one can't wait for Panama to end somebody's season/career out of revenge for tonight, knocking them out of the World Cup etc. And I know Dempsey will be one, completely torpedoing any remaining hope in the Sounders season, because that's how this works.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Safe to say Panama wasn't too thrilled?

¡Corruptos! <a href="http://t.co/rp8unSNipt">pic.twitter.com/rp8unSNipt</a></p>— Futbología (@futbologia) <a href="https://twitter.com/futbologia/status/624081107181371392">July 23, 2015</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Then after the game Guardado said he thought about missing the penalty on purpose. Whether he was being serious or not, even Mexico knows it shouldn't have been called.

I can definitely agree with you there.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Because at the end of the day, there really isn't anything we can do.

Sure there is- stop watching.

This tournament *could* have been on the industry giant- ESPN, but the money wasn't worth it. So it goes to 2nd tier Fox (or could have gone to NBCSN). If this years numbers are bad enough, then FSN will not want to pay for it, so it would end up on CBSSN. And barring all of those, it would be an internet package that would get the federation even less money.

Seems like a lot of people are really trying to get the country interested, to the point of being very vocal and insistent, and then when some complain about the corruption or the terrible state of the current play- the stock answer is "nothing we can do" as they want to still watch. If the eyes decrease, the money goes with it. Stop being afraid that the game will get destroyed if people do something radical. It's getting destroyed because people are doing nothing- so how is the alternate any worse?

This is a load of crap, was the WWC less because it was on Fox? The formation of these new sports oriented networks like FS1 and NBCSN is pushing up rights fees and ESPN can't afford to keep everything it had...FOX got it because they paid more, not because ESPN didn't want it...and what the hell does FOX vs ESPN have to do with the debate as to whether or not there is anything we can do?

First of all, you're pretty naive to think Fox is the "second-tier".

I don't think many of us are "trying to get the country interested", Fox certainly is since it's their product.

Frankly it's responses like yours that show an amount of ignorance. Ok, let's stop watching. Not really going to put a dent in the ratings worldwide considering a large portion of the world really doesn't give * about the corruption. Let's be radical! Let's leave FIFA! We'll get countries to join us like France and Germany! You know, the same Germany that traded weapons contracts to countries in the Middle East for votes to host the World Cup in 2006. The same France that ordered Platini to vote for Qatar in order to secure construction contracts and TV money for the French league. We always have England! The pariah of the game whose fans destroyed countless cities across Europe and killed people. Ok we'll leave FIFA by ourselves! Just remember, no World Cup and no Olympics! Oh and have fun telling the Womens team they can't defend their Olympic and World Cup titles, destroying any plausible way making of a living for them. Just don't expect me to be in the room with you. And MLS becomes an outlaw league, meaning anybody playing in it becomes ineligible for the World Cup, so any non-American (or American with dual citizenship) will be leaving the league. And it'll be real easy to grow the league when no top player in the world will play in it. I'm sure the owners who have invested millions will be happy. Get the American exceptionalism out of your head, while we have some influence in the game, it's not much. It's easier to use the channels we have to reform things and let our justice system take care of the crooks.

Yes, I do put Fox Sports as a second tier set up. ESPN has way more money, and way more outlets in many more countries than Fox does. Call me naive, but there's a big degree of reality that FoxSports is smaller and spreads less money than ESPN does.

And being that FIFA put the WWC on carpet, it should be pretty obvious how the business world views the WWC. If you want to deny the smaller audiences and whatnot, that's great.

Thankfully, the Futbol from the WWC was really good.

So what you are saying is that one just accept the diving and the poor officiating and the corrupt officials. Good luck with that.

No game is that interesting to watch.

If you think that I'm ignorant because of that, that's not my problem.

Keep thinking that Fox is a second tier setup. Considering they have rights to the NFL, MLB, College Football conferences, and the next 3 World Cups I wouldn't exactly think that. Fox has just as much, if not more, money than ESPN.

So what you are saying is that one just accept the diving and the poor officiating and the corrupt officials. Good luck with that.

No I'm saying you're ignorant if you think you not tuning in is gonna change anything. You want to really change things? Start putting pressure on major sponsors, don't buy McDonald's, don't buy Adidas, don't buy the next FIFA game. Start putting pressure on the Justice Department to continue their investigation. And put pressure on the suits to enact meaningful anti-corruption measures and to support referees to control diving in games. Not tuning in is just empty gesture that accomplishes nothing.
