So apparently because of what he did he could be suspended for 3 months, including the gold cup, MLS, USOC...that would be awful.
Yeah somebody didn't read closely, that section quoted is for amateurs, professional leagues/competitions have a different section with a 6 game minimum.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

And let's be honest, the internet wouldn't be blowing up if this had been Besler or Zusi in KC or Brek Shea in Orlando.

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Because media and people can be stupid:
Policy 202(1)(H)-2—Professional Leagues Policy Against Referee Assault
Section 1. Misconduct against referees may occur before, during and after a match, including
travel to and from a match.
Section 2. All Professional League Members shall adopt and enforce policies prohibiting
misconduct against referees that meet the following minimum criteria:
(a) Referee Assault.
(1) Any player, coach, manager, club official, or league official who commits an
intentional act of physical violence at or upon a referee (“Referee Assault”) shall
be suspended without pay for a period of at least six consecutive matches (the
“Assault Suspension”). The Assault Suspension shall commence with the first
match after which the individual has been found to have committed this act.
(2) For purposes of this subparagraph 2(a), “Referee Assault” shall include, but is
not limited to: striking, kicking, choking, grabbing or bodily running into a
referee; spitting on a referee with ostensible intent to do so; kicking or throwing
an object at an official that could inflict injury; or damaging the referee’s uniform
or personal property (e.g., car, uniform, or equipment).
(3) The Professional League Member may not provide for a penalty shorter than
the Assault Suspension but may provide for a longer suspension and/or a fine.

Professional competition, professional rules apply.

Remember, Cuauhtemoc Blanco got six games for headbutting a guy in this exact competition in 2008. Suarez got 4 months for biting a guy, as a repeat offender. Brian Mullan got 10 games for breaking someone's leg. Dempsey gets 3 months for this? Like I said, it's because it's Dempsey and Seattle and it happened against Portland.

You really have an issue with your sounders dont you? This is because its a prominent national team player who depending on "interpretations" of the rules which I will admit I didn't read and will follow up now that you posted a link could be suspended for 3 months. I think the Blanco suspension makes more sense than 3 months, but it is in the rules according to many.

Upon review, why does Policy 531-9 section 5 not apply? This did not occur in an MLS game? Because Dempsey was participating in Professional League Member activities?

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Columbia GK has two yellows, so will miss the next match, which could be against us...

Re: World Soccer XXVI: Fun for MLS Fans and Eurosnobs Alike

Looking at the knockout bracket schedule again, wow is that messed up.
winner of China vs Cameroon (6/20) faces winner of USA vs whoever (6/22) on 6/26...two less days rest
Germany vs whoever (6/20) winner will play France vs whoever (6/21) winner on 6/26
Brazil vs Australia (6/21) winner will play Japan vs whoever (6/23) winner on 6/27
Norway vs Engalnd (6/22) winner will play Canada vs Switzerland (6/21) winner on 6/27
Strange setup.

It's a situation of "if it looks like a rat and smells like a rat..." to me. Obviously Seattle is not well liked in US Soccer circles, Dempsey has plenty of detractors, and add in Portland, who don't like Dempsey because of how his deal went down, and a reporter/blogger trying to sensationalize something and you have a perfect storm.

Policy 531-9 doesn't apply because it is for amateur leagues at the local and state level. The key part is the stuff about the referee submitting a report to the State Referee Administrator, the text is verbatim to the Referee Administrative Handbook that every refree gets. Now the US Open Cup is different. It's a professional competition with professional teams handled directly by the USSF national office with its own competition and administrative rules, that includes assigning of referees and discipline.

It's essentially someone applying the rules for basically preventing a guy who gets suspended from your beer league from playing two towns over to MLS players.

OF COURSE it's a conspiracy against the Sounders.

Good Lord, my eyes can't roll enough.

If he can just get a slap on the wrist for ripping equipment out of a refs hands, we're reaching Italian levels of absurdity. That's just epic stupidity on Dempsey's part. And for what?

I don't think it's a conspiracy and I do think Dempsey should be punished. But this whole 3 month suspension rabble rabble pitchfork BS is happening because he's Dempsey, because he's a Sounder, and because it was Portland. Hell, it took a Grant Wahl one *ing phone call to US Soccer to figure that section doesn't apply in this situation.

Seriously ask yourself, would we be having this discussion if it had been Kyle Beckerman at RSL? Guarantee you we wouldn't.

We are having this discussion because we have lazy journalists, not because its Dempsey. I'm sorry but you're wrong. If it was anyone who was important to team USA and was suppose to be a big part of the Gold Cup, we'd be having this discussion...period, end of story. I'm sorry but this whole the world hates Seattle, Dempsey stuff is BS.

Yeah, it really is.

Especially the idea that the USSF hates Seattle, a regular location for USMNT games. That's laughable.
Actually I don't think it's the USSF that has it out here. In fact, I haven't said anything to that effect. If you actually read my posts, you'd know I think all media and Internet furor is BS because it's Dempsey and Seattle, that's all.

I honestly don't buy it, I just think people would've been more rational if this been a different player on a different team.

If you want to claim that it would have been different if it wasn't a prominent national team player who could miss the gold cup, I agree with you...its when you start claiming its because its Seattle and Dempsey specifically that you lose me. Obviously I'm not talking about bloggers/fans of Portland because any rivalry like that would have morons saying stupid stuff to jab the rival, thats completely different than claiming national media guys are only focused on this because of hatred for Dempsey/Seattle, etc.

They're focused on it because the rules are questionable because the US Open Cup isn't clearly a professional competition.

To me it's like Deflategate and the Patriots. If it had been any other team it wouldn't have as big a deal, but because it was the Patriots and Tom Brady everybody lost their mind. Same kind of thing here. A guy tweets out that "Dempsey could be suspended for 3 months!" and people go crazy. If it had been Kyle Beckerman at RSL either that tweet doesn't come our or people go "that doesn't make sense." This isn't the first time something like this has happened in the Open Cup involving a pro player. The procedure is pretty clear. People just lost it.
