World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

LA had nobody chosen. Yup, league champs, nobody taken. Pretty much shows how that team was all Gonzalez, Donovan, Keane, a decent goalie, and 6 guys Bruce ballin' it up.
Teams were allowed to protect 11 players, no? So maybe one of the other 7 guys they protected also had something to do with it?

Also, I thought MLS was better for player development because of all the wide open attacking play. Now you're saying that the best team in the league plays defense too, and does it successfully?

LA was pretty much their starting lineup and that was it. With Donovan retiring they were able to protect their lineup plus Gordon. Their depth is terrible and not worth an expansion pick.

MLS isn't a wide open attacking league, it's a run and gun league and LA is built to succeed in that. And the playoff format supports that.

Sure, but that's not what you said. You said it was three guys, a goalie, and scrubs.

I never said they were scrubs, I said they Bruceball it. They absorb pressure, clog up the middle, and get the ball to Keane or Donovan. They have a job and they do it well.

Their reserves are pretty scrubby, obviously because nobody was worth taking.

Most teams' reserves are scrubby. That doesn't prove that they're a three-man team like you're saying.

Not at all. Teams, especially top teams, need depth to handle schedule congestion, injuries, international call ups etc. LA was pretty much only after MLS Cup and got lucky, they didn't lose Keane or Donovan (or Penedo) during the summer, no CCL (Seattle benefitted from that too) got eliminated early in the Open Cup, and didn't have any significant injuries.

Sydney Leroux apparently announced she's dating Sporting KC forward Dom Dwyer.

It took the soccer media two minutes to have their future kids making the World Cup roster in 20 years...

Premature, but not surprising. One of the goalies from Cornell's men's hockey team ~10-15 years ago is married to one of the goalies from the women's team from the same time period, and fans have been wishcasting their kids to be a generation of supergoalies ever since.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

You guys need to look at it from the Canadian angle:

A boy, he'll find new and interesting ways to not qualify for the World Cup.

A girl, she'll find new and interesting ways to lose to the US in the knockout rounds...
