Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

as a revs fan, only themselves to blame for that. both NE attackers had chances to get a shot off and they blew it.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

I know it's asking a lot but, could Robbie Keane one time get a caution for dissent?

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

One sign of growth in MLS: We no longer get "Jay Heaps played basketball at Duke!" mentions...

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

well that sub doesn't bode well

revs playing pretty well now though

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

fouls like that are ones that people should be pushing for red cards on. zero chance of getting the ball

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

wait what. how do you call that and then not let them take it?

Fun fact: The Revs have lost MLS Cup in regulation, silver goal overtime, golden goal overtime, and a penalty shootout.

Enjoy OT2!

I keep waiting for Healy to ask Twellman what it's like to score in MLS Cup extratime...

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Typical LA goal. Sit around absorbing pressure, have Keane/Donovan score on the break.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Cue the "we're the best! We deserved this!" talk!

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

"Did you get the fairytale ending?"
Landon Donovan: "We all did."

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Went to the MSU-Providence Elite Eight game yesterday. First ever soccer game in person since I played AYSO like 14 years ago. It was actually a lot of fun, more than I thought I was going to have.

Unfortunately, MSU lost 3-2. Jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an incredible through ball, then Providence outshot us 7-1 the rest of the half. They had a great goal to the top corner of the net from just outside the box on a great set up. Their second goal was just atrocious defending. Providence attacker got through four people on the end line in the box and passed it away to a wide open man to knock it in from about five yards out. The third goal was a thing of beauty. Early in the second half, probably 35 yards out and caught the keeper napping too far up in the box, curled it up and around him and into the top corner. From there though it was all Spartans. MSU came back with a goal of their own with about 20 minutes left to make it 3-2, and had many chances to tie it but missed a couple wide open nets because of a couple Wondo moments where they couldn't redirect it in the air correctly. After the third Providence goal I think MSU outshot them 12-3 and had like a 7-0 corner advantage in the second half, but just couldn't put it in.

Still, it was fun, and I'll definitely try to go to some more games next year. Free for students and it's a quality product, unlike what the hockey team is putting out right now. It was funny hearing the starting lineups. While MSU is made up of a lot of kids from Michigan, most of the stars are from Texas, Illinois, or out of the country. Providence had a few guys from Germany, I think one from Africa, and the rest from Mass. It's pretty easy to tell what areas are soccer factories.

Whew, let me tell you though, Providence had a dad there that reminded me of every high school/travel/little league team I've ever played on. Yelling at the refs, yelling at the Providence players with the typical "play your game" type stuff. Then after the game ended a Providence player said something to an MSU player that made him go off and had to be restrained by his teammates. Providence Dad decides to start bashing Michigan State in the middle of the packed stands before about 20 people start yelling at him, a few getting in his face and his wife tells him to stop and sit down.

A few questions as a still soccer noob:
Is there any point to the 6 yard box besides it being a boundary for goal kicks?
What is the rule regarding players leaving early? Any restrictions like baseball on if you've been drafted and whatnot?
Why the countdown clock in NCAA?
What level are these refs at? Are they in any way affiliated with USSF, like are they doing NPSL in the summer or are they NCAA-only guys?

I'll try to answer here:

1. The only other time the goal area comes into play is an indirect free kick for the attacking team has to be taken from the top of it.

2. No restrictions on leaving early. A player can sign with anybody at anytime because college soccer is not affiliated with the USSF and FIFA. If they were, then there could be restrictions.

3. NCAA rules are, basically, set by coaches. They don't want that "mystery" of stoppage time. Same with the unlimited subs.

4. The referees are not affiliated with USSF technically. Most of them are at various levels. The major conferences have their own referees like college hockey (a colleague of mine from So Cal is an MLS 4th official and an SEC ref). Lower conferences and divisions are local guys. They can be anywhere from FIFA/MLS guys to guys from your local beer league. It can be part favoritism and part politics.

MLS Expansion Draft Today.

It was uh... interesting. NYCFC actually did pretty decent picking players but Orlando was uh... yeah.

I think the surprise of the day was with certain players left unprotected and yet nobody really chosen. Recap as follows:

LA had nobody chosen. Yup, league champs, nobody taken. Pretty much shows how that team was all Gonzalez, Donovan, Keane, a decent goalie, and 6 guys Bruce ballin' it up.

New England loses two players. Not Nguyen or Jones so they're good.

Seattle loses... Jalil Anibaba. Yup, leaves Scott, Cooper, and Gonzalez unprotected, loses a 4th string CB... Who is immediately dealt to Sporting KC. Seattle gains 160k in cap space, 50k in allocation money, and a Western Conference team with a worse defense. Not a bad day! :D
