Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Atletico up 3-1 on Chelsea late in the second leg at Stamford Bridge, after a goal-less draw in Madrid in the first leg. Assuming Chelsea don't put away three goals in the last 15 minutes, it will be the first time the two Champions League (or European Cup) finalists have been from the same city, and only the fifth time they've been from the same country.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Well, at least there's someone I can root for now in the final. If it'd been Chelski and Real Madrid, I'd have no options. Atletico Madrid I can get behind. Kinda neat that you have a local derby in the CL final. And with Atletico in the driver's seat to win the domestic league also.

I've always liked the Euro, although part of it could be the first time I experienced it I was at a bar in Bahrain in '96 surrounded by s**t-talking English puffs that cried in their beer while witnessing their beatdown by Germany.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Yeah, if you can hitch a ride to Seattle. ;)

Any idea of who's on the short list for host stadiums???
Pfft, going to Seattle for Alaskans is like going to the next block for the rest of you. Heck, if the games are at the right times I could fly in and out the same day.

Speaking of the Europa League, third tier teams from first tier countries, and first tier teams from second tier countries; Sevilla and Benfica are through to the final.

Well, that'll jump Spain up in the coefficients...

Fascinating scenes at Newcastle today ... the home fans staging a protest walkout at the 69th minute, and several thousand appear to have left. Protesting against the manager and the way the club has been run. And the loudest cheers have been angry protest cheers against the home side. Multiple fans ejected after approaching the directors box and providing verbal abuse. Almost no noise for the game itself.

Meanwhile, inept Cardiff, staring relegation in the face, and given the rare opportunity on the road to turn the home fans against the home side, have mustered nothing.

Fascinating.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

In an effort to needle who are on the Cosmos bandwagon, the attendance for their last game was... 4130! In contrast, Chivas USA had 7499.

The Cosmos are totes going to show that MLS is doing things wrong and that the power of the Cosmos brand is too powerful to ignore! Superclub!

...

To be fair: that's over 4000 for a what... Second, third level team?
Second. But since their management and mouthpieces, err fans, suggest that they are a big club with a powerful, worldwide brand and history that will fill stands and generate enough revenue to dominate soccer in this country, it doesn't look good.

tl;dr They talked a lot of * and think their bigger than they are, so it's funny!

And given that their current stadium sits just under 12,000, and they're not even filling half of that. They better hope that NYC wants to take another crack at hosting another Olympics and would see that their new stadium proposal would be useful for it.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Yeah that sucked.
Back 4 needs to be a priority in the transfer window.

As far as BIG CLUBS go, I don't mind Liverpool too much. In fact, I'd rather they win a title than United, Chelsea or City, so I've been pulling for them to close it out. But even with that in mind, I can't help but enjoy the schadenfreude on display with that level of a ball-busting loss to Crystal Palace after being up 3-0.

Yep, Newcastle hasn't always been bad but the last few years have been brutal!

I 'm a liverpool fan and I don't think anyone really expected them to do as well as they did this year. A lot of angst for sure after that game.!

There was a very interesting article recently interviewing Klinnsman about the US amateur soccer scene. I'll post a link if I find it.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

So... I guess at this point, Liverpool fans must need to have a lot of faith in West Ham.

Stranger things have happened.
