Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Well, you're not wrong.

Although I suppose part of me is still surprised that they couldn't corner the market on the types of people that live in America yet happily root for El Tri. Perhaps the Club America, Cruz Azul, Tigres, etc. fans simply couldn't get behind a <strike>farm</strike> partner club for their rivals?

Well they could've done that and done ok. Problem is, they named the team Chivas USA. And the thing is, most fans of other Liga MX teams reeeeeeeeally don't like Chivas. Add in the fact that Chivas Guadalajara fans saw it as a terrible version of Chivas and you have a recipe for disaster.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

And a point about Houston and KC moving to the West, that means the last 10 MLS Cup Finalists will be in one conference.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Elsewhere, the Cosmos signed Raul, which makes sense because he last played at a high level on a soccer field around the same time the Cosmos did.

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

Ah Sporting Kansas City, MLS Cup Champs to losing to the Red Bulls in hilarious fashion.

Now to see how the Red Bulls * it up against DC United...

With Tan involved, it seems almost guaranteed that they'll continue to be a ****show.

What's with your hatred of the Cosmos?
I think the Cosmos themselves are, at this point, a merchandising operation in the guise of a soccer team, and the fans who've latched onto them are delusional if they think the team has anything in common, save a name, with the team that once fielded players like Pele, Beckenbauer and Chinaglia. I don't hate them, even in the colloquial sports fan sense in which I "hate" Harvard, the Dallas Cowboys, or DC United. I just think they're ludicrous.

That was some fantastic marking on the winning goal by Matt Besler, whose game could not be improved by playing in a stronger league, no sir.

Actually, Besler was hung out to dry by his goalie not going for the ball. Besler made the right move to cover the goal line in case of a wacky deflection but then the goalie doesn't make a move for the ball and then he's in scramble mode.

I get the sentiment here, but is some schmuck trying to capitalize on the Cosmos name really all that different than if NYCFC had instead just taken up the name and logo to "honor" the original team? Is it any more ridiculous than when any other team names itself after a predecessor (Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, Winnipeg Jets and Ottawa Senators all come to mind)?

Yes, it's more ridiculous, because those teams all play in the same top-tier leagues as their namesakes. The current Cosmos are a second-tier team that exists to sell shirts.

Jeezuz ballz, who cares?

Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

They come off as disingenuous and the type of people who willingly eat it up as one of their "fans" are completely insufferable.

So they're trying to market themselves and make money?
