Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I think Meola was important and all, but Howard and Keller are light years ahead of him. Also, as for the women's team I think we should give love to Brianna Scurry. Solo was the right call, but Scurry was important.

My first reaction as I read top to bottom, "Where's Dempsey?" followed by, "Meola"?

Scurry cheated, waaaaaay off the line.

Just sayin'.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I don't think there is anything wrong with the choice of Meola. I do think a case can be made for Kasey Keller and Tim Howard still has a great opportunity to leap both as great American Goalie ever.

Well, I mean, it's not like it's absurd like if he had picked Juergen Sommer or something.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Jurgen Klinnsman just signed a 4-year extension with US Soccer. He will now coach thru 2018 Cup and becomes technical director as well.

This is either premature, or it's nice to not have that as a distraction during the WC campaign.

My hunch is that it also has quite a bit to do with talent development and getting better training, recruiting, etc. down through the junior ranks. Everybody loves to be part of a winner, and it may be seen as a way to get more young players to commit to soccer instead of another sport.

Premature, but given Sunil's infatuation with him prior to the hire and his strong results in the middle half of 2013, it probably shouldn't be surprising.

Hopefully he bucks the trend of American coaches in their second term.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

is there a long list of good candidates waiting to take the US job? Unlikely.

So I have no issue giving him a 2nd contract.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

and who would you choose to replace? Keller, Friedel, Howard? Caligiuri, Lalas?

Probably Caliguri and Keller.

EDIT: Come to think of it, I'd probably take all three of those GK's ahead of Meola. No offense to Meola, who was the man for his time and era, but the other three have done so much more. Keller's Gold Cup game against Brazil alone puts him ahead of Meola.

It is certainly a toss-up in my mind between Keller and Howard. Keller wasn't so hot in his World Cup appearances ('98 and '06), although that probably had more to do with the team failing than Keller. Howard had a strong Cup in '10, and if he has another strong showing in '14, then it's probably a no-brainer.

There doesn't need to be a long list. There needs to be one well-qualified applicant. I'd be very happy with Jason Kreis if he were interested in the job.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

So I asked Lalas on twitter why he chose Agoos over a guy like Caligiuri...he replied, "Why would I want a right footed player playing left back?" so is Agoos the best leftback the US has ever had?

He also was asked about Meola over Keller, Howard, Friedel. "All made great saves, but Meola had best feet."

Gotta hand it to him for having a rationale and defending his choices, anyway. I was never a big Agoos fan for whatever reason, so if it were up to me I might push Bocanegra out to the left and go with Eddie Pope in the middle.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I was always a big Agoos fan. Whenever we really needed an unforced turnover or a boneheaded pass, he always came through... Tough defender, rarely got beat 1 v 1, but once he had the ball he had no clue what to do with it.
