Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

And with Austria and Norway eliminated, that leaves me with Germany as a European country to root for.

Unless I feel like adopting the Swiss, who just punched their ticket today.

I know people dislike the English, but I'm all in on them because the continual screwing UEFA and FIFA give them. I'm on any side that's against Platini.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I thought of this idea in regards to World Cup hosting during some of the sheer boredom I have during the day.

Remember that article earlier in the thread about Gulati wanting to know what the the criteria should be? Starting in 2026 (provided Qatar keeps the WC) we should break it down into two pots for the tourney. The first pot for 2026 have the Established or Old World Pot (teams in UEFA, COMNEBOL, CONCACAF) be allowed to bid and then the next time in 2030 have a new market pot (AFC, CAF). The tourneys would alternate between the two pots. If none from the emerging markets wants to bid or feel they can't handle it, open it up to the one of the established pots. You could also make the runner-up in the established pot the "Backup plan" if the emerging country can't fulfill it's host duties. I was also thinking about things like you aren't allowed to bid for 20-30 years if you do host a tourney. It's just an idea I had is all.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Jack Wilshere quoted in that article:
If I went to Spain and lived there for five years I am not going to play for Spain.
It's pretty sad for England that even Jack Wilshere realizes he's not good enough to play for Spain.

I'm disappointed not to see John Brooks called in and playing tonight to fully cap-tie him. This is the perfect match for that, especially with Omar Gonzalez unavailable. I also don't understand Klinsmann's infatuation with Cameron and Besler. Goodson is better.

You'd think FIFA could at least note that point on their official site though, maybe on the page providing the rules for the European qualifying? If they can tell us how each pot is drawn into each group, they could tell us how the best runners up are selected.

this is why I use wiki for international sports

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

So the US win over Jamaica means they clinch First in the Hex because Costa Rica lost to Honduras. Now to hope for Panama to beat Mexico...

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

CONCACAF minnow bunkering is much more entertaining to watch when it's not happening against the USA.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Mexico misses a PK that would've put them up 2-0 around the 65 minute mark, then gives up the tying goal in the 82nd minute. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

And then a Mexican player saves their world cup hopes with an absolutely spectacular bicycle kick in the 85th minute.

Wow.

Wow.
That was an absolutely fantastic goal. Those NEVER go in, let alone in a situation like this. Wow is right.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

"Harold Cummings" does not really sound like a Panamanian's name.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

US played that game like a friendly for a lot of the game, but at the end they had a couple of players who really looked good and made a case to be on the squad

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Still a little Azteca magic left it seems.

Certainly appears so. That was one of the best goals I've seen while actually watching a game live on TV.

So, heading into Tuesday, here's what needs to happen for Mexico to be eliminated:

1) Costa Rica beat Mexico, preferably with a clean sheet
2) Panama squeaks out a win against the US

If that happens, then Mexico and Panama finish with 11 points. If both games are decided by 1 goal, then they also finish even on goal differential, leaving goals scored as the final tiebreaker. Currently, Panama has scored 8 goals to Mexico's 6. Moreover, Panama would need at least 1 goal to force this scenario. As a result, Panama cannot get to this scenario with anything less than 9 goals. That means for Mexico to win the tiebreaker (again, in this scenario), they would need to outscore Panama by 2 goals in order to draw even in goals forced. Consequently, if Panama beat the US 1-0, Mexico would have to lose to Costa Rica 3-4 to draw even in this tiebreaker, and 4-5 to win it. Point being, if Mexico loses and Panama wins on Tuesday, Panama will very likely take over the #4 spot, eliminating Mexico. Of course, I don't see both results happening (or perhaps either), so it suffices to say that Jimenez's bicycle kick likely saved Mexico's chances at having a chance to make it to the World Cup.
