Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Lionel Messi is now just nine goals shy of the Champions League record.

And he's only 26.

UEFA backs 2022 World Cup Winter Switch

Sooooooo... how much money changed hands here?
I don't know, how much cash can you physically stuff into a Brinks truck would be a good guess.

Going to go Head to Head with the Winter Olympics most likely, short of a Southern Hemisphere site getting selected to host the Olympics. I wonder how much money the Qutaries can throw at New Zealand or Patagonia to pull of them winning a Winter Olympic bid. A Southern Winter Olympics could get some decent backing, and would be first time its been held south of the Equator. But a quick check of the 2022 Winter Olympics Wikipedia page shows that it doesn't look like there's that much interest in a New Zealand bid from the Kiwi's.

Mo Money, Mo problems!!!

Anything to screw America.
Oh my god shut up the whole world is not trying to screw America at every turn you're just whining the same whine over and over and over.

If anything a January World Cup HELPS us because it's not concurrent with MLS.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I could live with a month of World Cup then two weeks of the Winter Olympics...

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Im sure MBO is talking about how everyone is bending over backwards to accommodate Qatar because UEFA & FIFA don't want the World Cup in the US again for some reason.

how does this "screw" the US? It would be during the MLS off-season.

We should have been the bloody host of the World Cup, not Qatar.:mad::mad:

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

One thing not mentioned in that article: Fox has the rights for that World Cup and, if they go with the January plan, that World Cup would be in the middle of the NFL playoffs. They have stated that when they bid, it was for a summer World Cup and, if it goes to January, they may seek action.

tl;dr Fox will be PO'd.

And England. Dirty money has bought Russia's and Qatar's World Cups despite the Brits and us having stadia and experience handling it.

JMH, just because you like picking fights with me doesn't mean you have to disagree with me.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

What happened to the suggestion that the 2022 World Cup get moved to November instead of January?

No conflict with the Winter Olympics, gives the domestic leagues another season to get ready for the big disruption... I don't see the issue. Why the sudden push for January?

Totally agree that Qatar is not an appropriate host. Also totally agree that moving the timing is nonsense too; far better to move the site instead. Or at least play all the games at night. It makes far more sense to have only night games than to shift the time of year.

I wonder if it even occurred to anyone at FIFA that during summer there it is something like 25[SUP]o[/SUP] cooler at night than during the day?

That's a very interesting angle. And very reasonable from Fox's perspective. Having the World Cup to fill the airwaves in the middle of summer, somewhat of a downtime in the overall sports world is a lot different than the World Cup competing for air time in January, when there's a lot more other sports activity taking place.

Initial thought on that was time difference... FIFA doesn't want to have games at inaccessible times like 3-4am in Europe... But then again, Qatar is East of Europe, so I dunno... That should help get games in primetime if they move them to later in the day in Qatar...

November conflicts heavily with the European Leagues AND the UEFA Champions League Group Stage.
