Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Given the potential for growth of the sport in the US and money spent, you'd think any governing body with influence wouldn't want to screw over US Soccer.

And have to put up with American Arrogance about how we're the Best Soccer country there is in the world, and how our superiority of our athletes crushes all before it?? Hell, I'm sure most other countries would rather eat glass and paint chips than have to put up with that.

I can't imagine any of the world soccer powers cowering at the thought of Americans getting a soccer boner. And as I said since $$ runs everything why not tap the market?

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Doesn't FIFA conduct the World Cup draw like the way many states conduct their lottery drawings?

In other words, televised live?

I seem to recall it that way, anyway.

If that is indeed the case, that might explain why some excellent methods to seed the pots 1 - 16 are not used.

It seems that it is a very high priority that, except for UEFA where it is inevitable, they not have two teams from the same federation in the same pool. That makes very good sense to me: you've just beat each other up through several rounds of qualifying just to get there, to then also have to face each other in the same pool as well? That's a political non-starter.

Any method that involves "well, pull a team's name from the pot, but if it's from a non-UEFA federation that already has a team in that pool, set that name aside, pull another one, and then put the first name back into the pot again for the next round," no matter how technically brilliant it may be, might be off the table because of the way the drawing is conducted. Imagine that on live TV.

Now, I don't have a problem with it, I'd prefer to have the top 16 teams seeded, so that they are evenly dispersed across the 8 pools. But FIFA might not like the TV show to come off that way.

I think the rest of the world often takes US goodwill for granted, and takes advantage of it. Sort of like being the oldest child: the younger kids can annoy you but you can't retaliate because your parents will just bawl you out for it while giving them a pass ("you're older and supposed to know better while they are little and haven't learned yet" type of *#&#@.)

Yes, it is televised live, and it is a huge event outside of the States.

I completely agree as to ensuring that as few confederation mates are paired together as possible. There should never be any more than 5 groups having 2 teams from the same confederation (so long as UEFA has 13 spots in the Cup).

As for re-drawing, that is sort of what they do. For example, if Brazil is drawn, and there is a pot with other CONMEBOL teams, and then say Uruguay gets picked, they then put that one back and pick another country. I don't remember if it is presented that way though on TV.

If we're going to seed the top 16, then I would hope that they would seed all 32. However, I don't see this happening for quite some time, unless of course we get the Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, USA group of death where the US and the Dutch advance. Of course, FIFA will not allow that to happen with how they seed, so we won't have to worry about it.

Easy to do when you've got Heidi Klum or Charlize Theron hosting it. Just another reason why Qatar 2022 will suck, no hot superstar model to host the draw. It'll be especially disappointing after seeing what Brazil and Russia do.

Definitely TWC. I have had the channel listings for Saturday's matches since Tuesday (DirecTV)

The Ticos are being investigated by FIFA.

But not for anything too ****ing, unless you think that yellow card on Besler was evidence of match fixing.

The dive and the laser pointers are fare more significant than the rest of the stuff, which is pretty bush league.

If the U.S. tried stuff like that, then CONCACAF would be doing a full investigation on it.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is that?

They're going to punish a team that's already qualified for Brazil by making them play their last qualifier behind closed doors? Ooh, scary. I know, I know, the loss of ticket sales and whatnot, but honestly, who cares? The Costa Ricans can make that up by having some kind of major pep rally before the WC. Smells like a "help Mexico get in" strategy by FIFA.

In other words, Costa Rica worked overtime to try and bone us, and FIFA's reaction is to throw a giant life preserver to our mortal enemies. If they want to punish the Ticos for being total buttwipes, why not just do what they did to Cape Verde and forfeit the game to the US, which would have the side benefit of forcing Costa Rica to have to get more points in order to qualify.

Idiots.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Has anything been said about what the US Team's schedule will look like next year? Klinsmann's thought on scheduling seems to be to schedule tougher teams...

Not that I looked too hard, or even know where to look, but Wikipedia has them listed as visiting Scotland later this year and that's the only friendly on the books there.

Their attempts to out Mexico Mexico are abhorrent.

Nothing will be really finalized until we know which teams qualify and after the draw so we know what the groups are. Rest assured plenty of friendlies will be played here as teams want to get used to traveling over.
