Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

Anybody else see this??

MLS announces plans to go to 24 teams by 2020.

Would love to see Detroit get one of the new franchises. Wouldn't be all that big of a deal for them to partner up with say Wayne State to redo their football stadium to build it up into a nice 20,000+ stadium. Then again, I could just as easily see em having the stadium up in Oakland County somewhere, perhaps at the Silverdome if they ever get that remodeling project that's been kicked around for that done.

The Twin Cities would also be on my short list of places to have a franchise.

Yeah, plenty of money floating around Detroit for that.

The Twin Cities don't have a wealth of 14-20K seat stadiums around either. I guess they could use the TCF Bank stadium but that's 35K soon to go up as they add seats for the Vikings stay.

I'm just not seeing either of those two being viable options.

I believe Zigi's plan was to use the lower bowl of the new stadium for soccer if he could get a team.

http://www.mlive.com/business/detroit/index.ssf/2013/07/1_billion_mixed-use_developmen.htmlRead it and weep. That's a Billion with a B. After the bankruptcy, a deal like that could go thru and make Detroit MLS happen.

That would make sense to me to tarp off the upper sections. And hell, if Minnesota ever got to the point to where they was selling out the lower bowl constantly?? That's just a bonus there.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

thought the MLS all-stars looked far more disjointed than they did last year. Totti had some passes that were as good as they get, even if he was aided because the left back was asleep most of the game.

Roma wasn't as out-of-synch as expected and Michael Bradley looked very strong out there. While there were plenty of miscues to go around and the MLS guys aren't playing together, the mid-season team looked far worse than the pre-season team when compared to last season's match.

Grant Wahl reports the USMNT vs Mexico game on September 10 in Columbus is sold out, with a US supporters section of over 9000 making it the largest section the USA has ever had.

It'll be curious to see what the split in the crowd is like, as I'm sure there's still going to be a sizeable chunk of the crowd supporting El Tri.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

When did tickets go on sale? Or when was the sign up for a waiting list? (I know supporters have their own but there had to be one for common folk). Oh well, there goes my hopes for a birthday present that probably wouldn't have happened anyway.

There's always the secondary market. I haven't checked but try stubhub. They usually have tickets available.

Well I'm also a poor college student, and this is the most popular qualifier so I probably won't have that amount of green to spend.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

So some specifics I've been able to come across on the Dempsey to Seattle deal:

Sounders are paying $9 million in transfer fee (they are reportedly the only one willing to pay Tottenham that).

Dempsey would make $32 million over 4 years. As a Designated Player only $175k counts against the cap.

Because Seattle is (reportedly) going to sign him as a DP, it bypasses the Allocation process normally used for returning USMNT players. The team at #1 on that list? Portland.

Although that was rumored, it's not true. There's some suspicion that it's another example of MLS's propensity for Calvinball rules when it comes to allocating players who are tied to a specific team.

See section II, subsections A and B.

Re: World Soccer XXIV: The Road to Rio

I'm just going by press reports on this. So it may be Calvinball, it may not be. All I know is Portland is not getting anything for this.

So in other words, the Portland-Seattle Rivalry might get a bit more heated then??
