Backflips, now with fire.

Yeah, I don't understand the flames either.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Question for those who follow these things closer than I do...would you rather win the FA Cup and be relegated, or not win the FA Cup, but remain in the Premier League?

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I asked Fox Soccer yesterday but never got an answer: Has anyone ever won the FA Cup in the same season they were relegated?

Personally, I would rather win the FA Cup because that is forever. My team can be elevated next year. In 100 years no one will remember that we were sent down, but our name will always be listed next to that cup.

I remember Brighton lost the Cup final in a replay against United and got relegated in the same year. I'd also take the Cup and relegation if I had a choice.

Also does this buy Martinez one more year or does he get sacked?

In and of itself, maybe, but a lot of the reason is the payroll. If they avoid relegation then yes he gets another year. But without more money, it's hard to see them winning a lot more games. Would have been better if they had played with that kind of urgency 2 months ago.

I think they get a parachute payment for 2-3 years so they can try to bounce back up. However, I may pull the trigger on canning him because Wigan are always flirting with the drop every season. I'm not saying they should be challenging for Europe, but mid-table would be nice.

So, a Wigan victory mid-week and Villa fans are really nervous. Very disappointed in decision Saturday. Up 1-0, Chelsea down a man and your best player picks up a yellow that could have been a red late in first half...could have sat Benteke, a young guy not proven to handle a yellow, and played Gabby up top. Instead, leave Benteke in, he gets the second yellow, deservedly, you go to 10. Then 2 goals conceded and your top scorer is suspended for the last game of the season which could decide relegation.

In the NBA they sit you if you get 2 fouls early, hard to see how there isn't some transference in this situation.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

HST, finally got to see the Flash win 2-1. Wambach had both goals, and Carli Lloyd got about 30 minutes after coming off her injury.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Wait, Obafemi Martins is in MLS now? That dude is really good (especially by the standards of MLS) and somehow still only 28 since he was only 19 when he broke in as a regular for Inter.

Had the "would you rather...?" conversation with a friend who's a fellow Fulham supporter and we came to the conclusion that flags fly forever. We're under no illusions about the fact that Fulham will get relegated at some point, maybe even by two or three divisions, and when that happens we'll just have to hope that some Harry Redknapp type hasn't screwed our finances so thoroughly that we aren't able to make a push to get back up. In the meantime, may as well have some hardware to celebrate in the process.

A troubling thing going on nowadays among European teams is that they aren't able to make the payroll and players aren't getting paid. That's what happened to Martins in Spain, he wasn't getting paid, bought out his own contract, and signed with Seattle.

Seattle's GK Michael Gspurning said he came to Seattle from Greece for the same reason, he said could make more money staying in Europe but he'd rather have a paycheck every month at the cost of a little salary hit.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Still puzzled as to why Mancini got sacked. You'd think winning the league title for the first time in about 40 years would get a guy some slack and it wasn't like Al-Citeh finished out of the European running. Man United was just that much better than everyone else this season. It's a very Chelsea-like move. I made the crack for a friend that if Mancini were managing Chelski and they lost to Wigan, that Roman would've stuffed him in an oil drum. I thought the Sheik had a little more sense. If we used logic like this back in the day, SAF would've been sacked in 1989. I bet even Moyes could get fired if he has a bad start for United due to the current climate. I'm not a City supporter, but this was shortsighted on management's part.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

But what have you won for me lately?

Nice to see Barca take back the title in Spain after a one-year hiatus. Interesting to see Espanyol clinch it for them by grinding out a draw when they didn't really have much to play for in midtable mediocrity (Fulham could take a lesson from them). A fair number of their players are Catalunya natives and some came out of Barca's youth system, and I wonder whether that may have been a motivating factor. Will the Special One be on his way out, as has been speculated?

Interesting but scary thought: the best GK in La Liga this season has been Thibaut Courtois, a 21-year-old Belgian on loan from Chelsea. Petr Cech is really good and still somehow only 30. Do they keep loaning Courtois out to Atletico indefinitely until Cech starts to slip? They have to be considering replacing him at some point, but why would you?

Wigan lose to Arsenal and are relegated. Arsenal go into the last day with a one-point edge over Spurs in fourth; Arsenal play at Newcastle and Spurs host Sunderland.

Nice to see Arsenal show some killer instinct today. They even have a shot at third if Everton can pick up at least a point against Chelski. Tough for Wigan to have to fight for their life today after the big FA cup win over the weekend.

Let's take care of business at St. James Park you Gunners!

Now, if Everton, Arsenal, and Tottenham ALL can win this weekend... :)

Tottenham are still fifth and Everton still sixth?

Unless Tottenham overcome a the huge goal differential they have with Chelski of course. Bale is good, but I don't see him getting them past a 16 goal differential going into the final game.
