World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

And to have so may fans in the stands for it, too!
I read one report that the Timbers Army put over 3000 fans in the stands for that game. It was a special day all around. I can't get over a kid that young deciding what he wanted more than anything was to have fun with his friends.

WNY Flash finally won last night, much better job with controlling the game. Also, Carli Lloyd may be coming back on the 11th, depending on how next week's tests go.
Carli's goals are pretty low...she just wants to be FIFA Woman of the Year. :)

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I feel like this shouldn't be possible. That a 5-0 Barca victory was more likely.
Nah, I didn't really find it all that surprising. If the match in Barcelona had been the first leg then I would've expected something different, but going in needing to score at least 4 goals is a tough situation no matter how good your team is. As good as Bayern are, and then knowing that Barca would have to be throwing guys forward all match to try to light it up, it seemed like a reasonable possibility that they'd just be able to sit back and absorb the pressure and score on the counter.

I would also note that Barca were without Messi. While I think the result would have been similar even with him, the inability to score even one goal I think highlights their lack of depth. A friend and I have discussed this on and off for the past couple of years, and I continue to believe that if you took Messi away from Barca, and took Ronaldo away from Madrid, Madrid would win the title (and maybe even fairly easily) because Madrid have more secondary scoring threats than Barca.

Well, anyway, it's academic at this point.

6-0 Bayern on aggregate with about 20 minutes left. unless Luongo goes in net for the Germans, I think they'll be playing Deutschland Uber Alles at Wembley.

The PAT is good. Muller.

About 70 years too late for that song to be blaring in England in some Germans case. :D

If I'm not mistaken, don't Bayern and Dortmund have a league game or a cup game between now and the CL Final?

That's kind of awkward, eh?

At the moment I'm concerned about whether Fulham will still be. After an embarrassing home loss to Reading, it doesn't seem like a sure thing.

What looked to be a Villa v. Wigan deathmatch is now turning into a Battle Royale. A few weeks back I "calculated" how high Villa could finish, mostly to distract myself from the likelihood they'd be relegated. While they won't, there is probably a scenario in which they finish in the top 10. There is still one where they get relegated. The one 'law' suggesting they will finish in the 12-16 range? The number of teams crowded around them...just like it is hard to leapfrog 4 teams and get into the top 10, it will be hard for them to un-leapfrog 4 and go down.

A point this weekend, Chelsea at Villa Park, would probably ensure staying up. So, as much as I dont want to see them try to draw 0-0 and pack it in...their recent play suggests they should be aggressive...that could result in a demoralizing 4-0 beat down. Lambert will no doubt do some thinking this week, especially if Lowton is out. I think I'd go with a defensive scheme to start, try to keep the game low scoring, play some long counters to Benteke and use my subs for offense if they are trailing by 1, for defense if it is a tie or Villa lead. Head into the last weekend on a flat or high note, not the youngest team in the BPL trying to stave off relegation on the road.

So, much as I hate to see them play for a draw, I guess it is the smarter move.

Ajax did defeat Willem II 5-0 on Sunday to wrap up their 32nd Dutch title, and 3rd in a row.

SAF is retiring at the end of the year.

USWNT tickets at Gillette go on sale to the public Friday at 10. Presale starts today at 10. Tickets range from $31-260 (including TM fees). The USWNT plays South Korea on June 15 at Gillette and June 20 at Red Bull Stadium in New York.

It will be interesting to see whom they name as successor. I hope it's not Mourinho. :p Moyes would be fine with me.

They could name Rafa then he would have coached at Liverpool, Chelski and United in a 3-year span...

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Wigan not getting a point yesterday just relieved a lot of stress at several clubs.

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

Got tickets to the USWNT game! Right along the goal line, behind the Team USA bench!

Re: World Soccer XXIII - "Pay" Up Pompey?

I know Sir Alex rubs a lot of people on the board the wrong way, but he truly was a great manager no matter who you supported. I started following United in the early 90s, but I'm a history geek that loves watching old soccer matches. I always admired the fact that he was given a chance to manage over a few years instead of being dumped quickly like the Roman Abramovich's of the world like to do. They actually wanted to fire SAF before winning the 1990 FA Cup over Crystal Palace, Sir Bobby Charlton gave him time.

I know people say United buys titles, but they did develop their fair share of homegrown players. Also, a lot of the buys were shrewd. (I came to find out that Eric Cantona was not United's first choice for a striker in the 92-93 season.) Fergie wanted David Hirst of Sheffield Wednesday, but was rejected. Instead, they get Cantona (at 2 million less than they bid of Hirst) and the rest is history.

SAF is up there with Brian Clough and Bill Shankly as my favorite managers. As for replacements, I think they should give Bayren's Jupp Heynckes a ring or ask Mourinho (who is a favorite of Ferguson.)
