Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Pretty big news, FOX has won the TV rights to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

Who knows what the TV situation looks like by then, but it will certainly be a different experience.

Watch ESPN severely cut its soccer coverage. :D

It would be pretty awesome for individual sports I think, but just a bloody nightmare overall for the Athletic Department as a whole. Unless they somehow factored it on how the athletic department does as a whole, like how the Director's Cup does it. Perhaps 10 leagues of 10 schools. The worst team in each League gets regulated from D1-A to D1-AA. D1-AA is 100 schools with ten leagues of 10 schools. The top D1-AA schools would move up, and yet would still get to face the D1-A schools in the playoffs events like the Big Dance for basketball. The ten worse D1-AA schools would get shipped down to a D2-A Level. D2 would be two levels of a hundred schools each, a D2-A and a D2-AA. Then there would be a D3, with a bunch of different levels there as well. Maybe make the levels there more like 150 schools perhaps between the D3-A, the D3-AA, and the D3-AAA. The different "A" class levels are just for the football teams to compete against in the playoffs, and they would be very heavily weighted on factoring in who moves up, and who moves down, since that's about the only way you would be able to sell this crazy idea to the South.
Yeah, it would obviously take a complete change of the whole college sports structure, so obviously it would never happen, and I'm not even saying it should happen, just that it would be interesting.
I did mention on the D2Football message boards that it would be interesting to have every conference have two divisions and do pro/rel just within the conference, creating meaningful games for those that are out of playoff contention (in lower divisions. In FBS, of course, the teams still try to get bids to the meaningless bowls, so they still play some "meaningful" games). I got skewered.

As long as they don't do something stupid, like putting the US games on Fox Soccer Plus.

Fox does a solid job with the Champions League (games are available on the Fox Sports affiliates, plus Fox Soccer and Fox Plus). They can also use FX and the Fox broadcasting channel to show games. That also means repeats of each game should be available on FSC.

I'm sure the big matches will be on Fox and FX while others will be on the Regional sports networks, FSC and FSC Plus.

Yeah, it would be too big of a change to the way things are now for it to ever work. If they had put it in like way back in the 30's, maybe.

When has FOX ever done anything stupid?
Ummmm.... Glowing Puck ring a bell??

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Fox Soccer, Fox Plus, FX and all the Fox Sports Nets could go dark on DirecTV as early as November 1. The contract to carry those channels expired September 30 but both sides agreed to an extension. Depending upon who you choose to believe, either DTV will turn the stations off, or Fox will pull their programming. The two sides also disagree about what the holdup is. Bottom line, it could be an awfully quiet soccer season for DTV subscribers (and I'm going to get a hell of a rebate if those channels do go dark:) )

Nonsense. FSC and FS+ won't see a single live game.

I'm not too worried about it overall, I think FSC's pundits are generally terrible, but they should be able to bring in some pretty solid talent with the BSkyB connection.

I think fans of the women's game might have reason to worry, that's a World Cup I could see the non marquee matchups being relegated to FSC or FS+, by again, but 2018, that's probably not as much in the TV wilderness as it is now.

No. No no no no no. I *ing hate Fox's soccer coverage.

What really worries me is MLS, Fox would love to bury MLS in favor of the EPL (as they have done in other countries), ESPN now has no reason to keep the rights now, and who knows what NBC will do. They've got to work on the TV ratings now before 2014.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Not if NewsCorp gets FSC and FSC HD moved onto basic tiers with cable companies and such.

Right, but I doubt they manage that. Even if they do, those are the at best the 4th and 5th most visible channels FOX has behind FOX, FX, and FS Regional. I doubt games get sent there.

One thing that I do think is significant that I didn't think of before is the loss of ESPN3.com as a way to stream games online. Foxsoccer.tv is probably overpriced at $19.99 and is far too unreliable to be taken seriously. But you know, in 7 years, who knows what the internet viewing situation will be.

They don't need to go that far. Bobby McMahon is excellent, and I've generally liked Kyle Martino and Brian Dunseth. And Chris Sullivan isn't great, but he's better than John Harkes.

Agreed on McMahon. Warren Barton is terrible though.

MLS Cup Playoffs just about set, LA and Houston play tomorrow to figure out how the Wild Card round goes for Wednesday. Colorado and FC Dallas host the games, who they play depends on Houston. Congrats to Sporting KC for being the only one in the East to finish ahead of Colorado! FC Dallas finishes 4th overall and goes to the wild card round...

Highest remaining wild card goes to play SKC while the lowest goes West and gets to lose to LA, or if they win play the winner of RSL - Seattle!

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

The league-owned NSC Minnesota Stars, who got into the playoff as the lowest seed on the last day of the season won the first leg of the NASL Championship 3-1 at home against Ft. Lauderdale. Second leg next Saturday at Ft. Lauderdale.
