Yawn...

1600 FOOTBALL: BBC Sport understands Blackburn Rovers have made an inquiry for Birmingham City defender Scott Dann.

Villa have signed a guy by the name of NOBODY, he doesn't produce much but he comes at a good price

we'll be lucky to have 10 field players available at the rate we're going...L. Young and Makoun are both gone...we did pickup a new ticket taker and one part time trash can emptier...so, we've got that going for us.

If Given can work on his speed he could play striker and goalie, how often are they both involved in the same play?

We could play with 10 instead of going up to 11...which is more, isn't it?
What confuses me about Villa is that after their firesale of MF this transfer window, they didn't have room for Michael Bradley? I get that they have more depth there than at DF, but they're keeping Eric Lichaj, who is good but not as promising as Bradley, IMO.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Did see this one, which I'm sure will generate some interest. Apparently there's talk about Arsenal acquiring Clint Dempsey from Fulham.

http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2011/08/30/2642782/arsenal-make-move-for-clint-dempsey-but-fulham-demand-10m
I don't know how I feel about that. I like Arsenal in comparison to most of the other big money clubs in England, but I just don't know if Dempsey would really get much playing time there.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Oh, I think he'd certainly get playing time.

Still think it's bunk though, remember when he was being linked to Liverpool last summer?

Goal knows how to get their clicks. 1.) Find popular European club. 2.) Find popular American player. 3.) Link them together and bam, that's your reporting done for the day.

It's not so much that Villa didn't have room for Bradley as McLeish didn't have room for Bradley. The clubs had agreed to a fee, but the deal was called off after the player and new manager had a conversation.

Not sure why that's a bad thing. Dann is talented and young. Yes, Birmingham City got relegated, but largely because they couldn't score, which was hardly his fault. In 2009-10 when he was fully healthy, he was a big part of one of the better defenses in the Premier League.

The differences between Houllier and McLeish are pretty significant relative to player relations...several guys are out of the doghouse while others are now living at somebody else's house. This is part of what I was concerned about originally, that we spend another year in transition after spending last year changing over from MON to Houllier.

That impact, moving from 6th to 10th last year can influence whether a player sees a potential Euro or CL result or just a mid-table result in their future. So, pencil in Gabby for a transfer next year to a big 4 club if Villa comes in 10th again.

One has to wonder if Bradley, not McLeish was the problem.

Didn't Bradley have a similar falling out at Borussia M'bach?

I'm not judging him. He may be brilliant. But it's not the greatest need right now.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Things are getting worse. Brett Emerton (midfield) is done at Blackburn. He is joining Sydney FC. Everton was his last match.

If they don't get 2-3 players they are going down this season. So much for new ownership...

I should add there is rumor that Wenger's embarassment to ManU has him looking at Christopher Samba. Which would further deplete the team if allowed to leave.

Just curious what connections each of you have to "your" team...how did you become a fan?

Meanwhile, in America, the US Open Cup Semifinals were tonight. Chicago defeated Richmond 2-1, Seattle beats FC Dallas 1-0

US Open Cup Final is Oct. 4th in Seattle, Chicago vs Seattle. A win for the Fire would be their 5th Open Cup, tying the all time record for wins, a win for the Sounders and they'd be only the second club to win 3 in a row.

I think categorically assigning blame to one or the other is a little silly. Surely, McLeish didn't say that he really wanted Bradley in the side, or he'd be a Villain today. I think even an indication that he'd have a good chance to compete for a starting role would have led to the transfer going through, as Bradley had been through that before. Most likely, it was a lukewarm response or a "Houllier rated you, I don't" response, and whether it was Bradley or McLeish who ultimately said "no", I think Bradley is better off out of there.

Didn't Bradley have a similar falling out at Borussia M'bach?

No, it wasn't similar at all.

He was the starter in midfield through the fall. They were crushed with back-line injuries, and, partly as a result of that, leaked goals. The coach was desperate to do something to shake up the side, so he benched Bradley going into the winter break. That was what led to Bradley wanting out, and the loan to Villa. 'Gladbach fired their coach, got healthy, and barely survived relegation (making the playoff spot and winning the playoff). While it's not fair to say that they were better off without Bradley (too many other changes coinciding with the improvement), it is certainly true that they did well enough without him to consider him expendable, particularly given that he bailed when they were trying to avoid relegation.

When I started watching soccer as an adult, I watched players not teams. with US National Players being at the top of the list. So Brad Friedel specifically got me interested in Blackburn. From there I just continued to grow to support them as a team instead of just Brad. With that there has obviously been other players on the team I really liked (Dunn, Emerton, R. Nelsen, etc).

I did not follow Blackburn in 94-95 for their only premier league title. Although I was into soccer with the World Cup having just been here. Plus the internet was only like 10 minutes old back then, so it wasn't like it was easy to get information on Euro teams.

As a youth I watched and played a ton of soccer, including going to Kicks and Strikers games. but there was probably a 10+ yr gap between that and my love of soccer as an adult.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Looking at the updates for deadline day. Not quite done deals, but I feel confident they will be by days end for Blackburn.

Yakubu - Striker, Everton
Scott Dann - Defence, Birmingham City

Some other things that are out there, but no idea if they are realistic.

Georgios Samaras - Striker, Celtic
Robert Snodgrass - Wing/Forward, Leeds

Villa signs Enda Stevens ...at first I thought it said Edna and I was like "great, we signed a middle-aged housewife, we sure need one of those":D

Pretty hard to make sense or get excited about Arsenal's moves. At least Bendtner is out the door, on loan to Sunderland. Arteta (sounds like it's a done deal) is ok, but with his injury problems in recent years, he doesn't seem to be the player he was when he pulled the strings nicely for Everton. Yossi Benayoun, a decent player who saw the pitch all of one minute last season with Chelski. Santos sounds decent, but you usually don't go to the Turkish league for a Brazilian to bolster your defense. And Mertesacker certainly makes the backline taller, but he isn't exactly speedy. All the big targets Arsenal was after stayed put or were snapped up by others. But once again, Arsenal complete a transfer window with a profit. Oh, and they now have captains for six national teams, but somehow seem to not have a lot of leadership in the squad. Go figure.

They should've splashed more cash to get Edna Krabappel.

Re: World Soccer XXI: Don't Tread on the Red, White, and Blue

Fulham picked up Czech defender Zdenek Grygera from Juve earlier in the day. They've also apparently fought off late interest from Newcastle to sign Costa Rican forward Bryan Ruiz from Twente, and (this one was way under the radar, didn't ever hear the name until it was being reported as a done deal) former Chelsea target Orlando Sa from Porto. I say "apparently" because though both players have themselves announced their signings (Ruiz on his official Twitter feed, Sa on his official website), the club hasn't announced either signing yet, nor has the BBC.

If both are true, it would complete what I'd consider to be a really successful window, offloading some older players, hanging on to guys (Dempsey, Hangeland, Schwarzer) who are often rumored to be out the door, sending some younger guys (mainly Stockdale) who need match experience out on loan, and bringing in some really talented players.
