World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Of course, Brits would never call it 'soccer'. :D
Not entirely true. The Brits invented the word soccer. I saw it explained thusly: they often add 'er' to friends' names to create simple nicknames, like calling a John, 'Johner.' Shortly after the invention of association football, someone took the 'soc' in association and added 'er.' The term soccer was used just as often as football in England until the '60s or '70s, then they decided to get snobby about it.

As a point of comparison, rugby football has also been called "rugger".

Always nice to see Mexico go out in the first round.

Tough to get worked up about this one, most of the Mexican team are as American as you or I.

If the unthinkable were to happen tomorrow and Brazil loses and Australia beats Norway 3-0, would the US be better off losing tomorrow and finishing second?

In that scenario, the US would play Australia and the winner of France/England to get to the finals.

Of course, that is unlikely. The US will probably win the group, play Australia and then Germany in the SF.

...or France? Who seem to have forgotten to surrender after being down 2-0 and 3-1.

All they need is another corner.

Edit: Never mind.

Man, Martin Jol is a funny-looking dude. He looks more like a toad than noted man-who-was-once-described-as-a-toad Hideki Irabu ever did.

Henry disagrees.

She picks up the ball and starts carrying it...that's pretty blatant. At least Henry's was subtle enough that it looked natural.

Hungarian referee Gyoengyi Gaal has apologised to Fifa for missing an obvious handball during Equatorial Guinea's 3-2 loss to Australia at the Women's World Cup on Sunday.

Equatorial Guinea's Bruna caught and held on to the ball for a few moments, believing a free-kick had been awarded.

The defender then let the ball drop to the ground but Gaal waved play on amid Australian protests.

The incident was also missed by the assistant referee.

Watch the play while you can...

The blatant handball by Bruna of Equatorial Guinea against Australia that the officials missed has been blocked out of Youtube because FIFA figures that if folks don't see it,then they won't know and then they won't remind Blatter that video referral technology is actually a good idea.
This video contains content from FIFA, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.

It's as if FIFA thinks that soccer fans are completely stupid. Why would they think that?

Nevermind.

Blatter's basic strategy is acting like a 6 year old, putting his fingers in his ears and screaming, "La. La. La. I am not listening."

It's the It will go away if I do this strategy.

If Henry had grabbed the ball, stiff armed the goalie and spiked it into the net then we have a comparison...what she did was so blatant that she either clearly thought it was a free kick or went momentarily insane. He tried to cheat, did cheat and got away with it. The only common factor is that the ref didn't call either one. There is no way she thought she'd grab the ball out of play, in plain sight and get away with it; he did think he could handle the ball twice based on where he was located relative to the ref and get away with it...don't lump her in with Henry, it is an insult to her as a sportsman, er, woman.

She is more in the Jim Marshall category than the Henry category.

In FIFA's defense, I rather suspect that they'll pick off any highlights they find on Youtube, not just that one play.

Maybe. But then again, this video has been up for three days...

I assume that the rule about being completely out of bounds on throw-in is more of a suggestion in this tournament. I've seen it 5 or 6 times this tourney, and on that last throw-in for Australia, her heels were on the line and her feet were all the way across the line.

I think you have the rule wrong.
