Random Villa thought: next 3 are against one team in the relegation zone and two teams right above them in the table. Do poorly and they are cementing a miserable finish and putting themselves back in the relegation discussion...do well and they have the potential to not only put distance on relegation but they can get into the upper half via the escalator of beating the teams right above you.

So, they'll go 1-1-1 and leave themselves right where they are.

It's been that kind of year.

Timbers home opener kicks off in 10 minutes on ESPN2.

Aside from the refereeing, lots of awesome things going on in the first half.

Chicago looked like the rain was affecting them big time.

That's ok, Sounders will shut up the Timbers Army. :)

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Starting tomorrow, Barca and Madrid are going to play four times in seventeen days: tomorrow at the Bernabeu in a league match that's a must-win for Madrid, next Wednesday at the Mestalla in Valencia in the final of the Copa Del Rey (the only major trophy that Barca has won more times than Madrid, though the Copa Del Rey isn't taken nearly as seriously as, for example, the FA Cup; despite the fact that one of the two has won the trophy 42 times out of the 109 that it has been awarded, this is only the sixth time that they have met in the final, and the first since 1990), the following Wednesday again at the Bernabeu in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal, and the Tuesday after that at Camp Nou in the return leg.

I have to figure Madrid will at least win tomorrow, if not also in the other two competitions, but I have to wonder: if Barca eliminate Madrid in the Copa and the CL and also win the league, will they sack Mourinho? Obviously he's one of the best managers in the world right now, and the reigning CL champion, and to an extent Inter's recent demolition at the hands of Schalke speaks volumes about him. However, Madrid have given a very short leash to distinguished managers since Florentino Perez became their President (Vicente Del Bosque didn't have his contract renewed in in 2003 despite winning both La Liga and the Champions League twice in 4 1/2 years in charge; Fabio Capello was sacked in 2007 after only one season despite having just won La Liga), and high-profile losses to Barca sit very poorly with their board. It'd be pretty shocking given that they've won over 75% of their matches since Mourinho took over, but they won 75% of their matches under Pellegrini too and he was still only in charge for one year (albeit a year with no hardware). It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

So this is what it's like when something sounds terrible and awesome at the same time...

Man City takes a shock lead against United in the FA Cup Semi-Final as Yaya Toure scores with a scuffed shot that nutmegs Sherlock Holmes...I mean Edwin Van Der Sar.

Now Scholes sent off for a horrible high boot to the thigh. 18 minutes to go, a man down and a goal down.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Man City has no concept of how to play with the lead a man up. Play keep away, bleed the clock. Idiots.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Al Citeh wins 1-0. Fisticuffs at the end between Balotelli and Ferdinand!

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Because Manchester derbies are sooooo exciting.

Well of course it's different perspective for each game, but no, I don't think today's Manchester derby was particularly exciting for the neutral.

What I will say for it though is that at least something was on the line. Real could have won 10-0 today and still not have had a chance at the league. Come the Champions League or, to a lesser extent, the Copa Del Rey, I'll be quite excited to watch El Clasico. Today though? Meh.

OK, fair enough.

List of players who cannot buy a goal at the moment:
David Villa
Thierry Henry

Edit to add: Oh, and of course Fernando Torres.

Henry might not have a goal, but he pretty much created Red Bulls' second one today. Quakes looking very flat.

Yup, that was pretty much all him.

Rodgers has the finish that the Red Bulls lacked the first several games this season.
