Video of the Mullan/Zakuani incident. His right leg is disgusting.

http://www.mlssoccer.com/videos?catid=114&id=13995
I nearly threw up a little. Just horrible.

So much for Seattle now. :( Zakuani was one of the best players this year for Seattle.

edit: The worst part of it is the sound. I mean you can hear it break. *shudders* If you watch the full match highlights you can see some the aftermath, including a somewhat audible "You broke his *ing leg!" from James Riley and a "* you man!" from Hurtado.

Looks like QPR's automatic promotion party could be in some trouble.

QPR Troubles

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Most of the transgression occurred last season, but it was actually 6 games into this season that they supposedly realized there was a problem with the third party ownership and rectified the situation. They won all 6 of those games. I wouldn't be entirely shocked to see an 18 point deduction based on that.

As a Norwich fan, that would make my life considerably less stressful over the next few weeks, but something wouldn't feel right if the canaries got automatic promotion or even the title through another team's sanctions.

My biggest concern with the linked article is that they're totally ignoring my team though! Even if QPR had won against Cardiff today (they didn't. it was a 2-2 draw), they still wouldn't have the title in hand. Granted the goal differential is huge, but Norwich still would have been within 9 points with three games to go. Presenting the trophy when there's still a mathematical possibility of another team going above them is a bit weird, no?

Regardless I'm still a ridiculously happy football fan having watched my team go from a 50 year low of relegation to the third tier only two years ago to winning League One on the first attempt to now being in an automatic promotion slot with a clear path to the premier league 3 games from the end of the season. All of this has been done without any big star players and without spending much. Gotta love Paul Lambert!

Arsenal's title dreams look to be all but dashed by Bolton with a late one by Tamir Cohen. Chelski sits in second 6 points behind United with 4 to play.

United win 2-0 over Schalke to take leg 1 in Germany. Manuel Neuer prevented the game from turning into a complete bloodbath for the home side.

Arsenal have stunk recently. Arshavin has mailed it in all season, as have others. They need some new blood and some depth. Their defenders and goalkeeping have been patchwork all season. Can't do that and win the EPL, or much of anything else. But, I doubt Wenger will do much, as is his normal way of operating.

To hear Arsenal fans complain about Wenger, you'd think they were battling relegation and not qualifying for the Champions League every year since his second season in charge. I think there are probably about 18 Premier League teams (and almost every other team in Europe) that would be happy to take him off your hands if you decide to go a different direction. (And I can't think of more than three guys who are both a realistic option and stand even a tiny chance of doing a better job.)

I'm a huge Wenger fan, but it doesn't mean I have to be happy about their collapse in the last month or two. The EPL title was there for the taking, and now that they're out of other competitions, they should be fresher, but they've been marginal, rather than taking the bull by the horns and making a run for the title. What fan is going to be happy with a late season swoon? Of course Wenger has done a fantastic job overall, on a small fraction of the budget ManU and Chelski spend on new players. But, he's resisted spending cash on a few weak spots in recent years, which very possibly has cost Arsenal a piece of silverware or two. He's very good, but certainly has made mistakes.

This is just silly. Wenger is unwilling to make the purchases that Arsenal need to succeed. Why shouldn't fans be complaining about that?

It's worthless to just look at results in a vacuum, you have to look at what a team could logically have been expected to do and compare it to what they actually did.

Though I think Cesc deserves a bigger portion of the blame than he's getting...

What's silly is complaining about the methods of one of the best coaches in the world. I can't figure out who they'd want, and who's a realistic hiring possibility, that would do a better job. Harry Redknapp throws money at problem areas, would they rather have him? Wenger brings in young players, largely builds from within, and by doing so has put together a team that's a perennial contender without spending piles of cash like Chelsea or the Manchester clubs. I just don't see how they aren't willing to take the bad with the tremendous amount of good he's done (three titles in 15 years after two in the 25 years before he took over; four FA Cups; Champions League qualification every year including a trip to the final; the only unbeaten Premier League season). Sixty-one year old leopards don't change their spots.

Real Madrid/Barcelona from the Bernabeu starts soon and not one mention of it today!

I'll have that and Fulham-Bolton to watch on the DVR when I get home (no idea whether I'll have time for both) so I'm not going to be doing much discussing this afternoon. :)

Hard to say whats been worse in this game, Madrid's off and on the ball hacking or Barca's pathetic whining and diving with the usual suspects (Pedro and Busquets) being the worst offenders.

Barca up 1-0 after Pepe was dismissed for a pretty soft red.

I have to say, I usually get grief around her for being too big of an Arsenal and Wenger fan. Really, few Arsenal fans are calling for or even considering calling for Wenger to leave. We by and large recognize he's done a masterful job overall and don't want to trade him for any other manager. But, that doesn't mean we never say a negative word when he doesn't buy a greatly needed central defender or go with untested goalkeepers for another season, etc. You can both greatly respect Wenger, yet question certain decisions. It's not an either or situation.

Yes, with all of those things (besides the continual CL qualification) coming over 5 years ago. That's the problem. No one disputes that Wenger has done a good job at Arsenal, but I think it's totally justifiable for fans to be frustrated at his unwillingness to do what it takes to keep winning those trophies.

OK, sorry if I overstated the point you were making then.

Nice evening of soccer on my DVR. In the CL match, I also thought the red on Pepe was harsh (though it could be argued that it balances with two that could have been given in the Copa final), and I hate the embellishment of minimal contact. On the other hand I thought the worst dive of the night went to Di Maria and might have even been the play when Alves got his yellow card. Ronaldo worked hard with minimal success, Ozil didn't see enough of the ball to have much impact, Adebayor still looks good but is the worst tackler for a professional player I've ever seen, he just shoves people like he's a sumo wrestler or something. Mainly an ugly match rescued by Messi's sublime second goal, good thing the match wasn't on GolTV or we would've heard Ray Hudson spontaneously combust on air.

In "safe midtable position" news, a comprehensive performance for Fulham over Bolton at the Cottage. It's harder to dislike Bolton than it used to be now that Coyle has them playing a more entertaining style. Eidur Gudjohnsen deserved a goal. Sometimes I forget how good Simon Davies is. With his brace today, Clint Dempsey first tied, then passed, Brian McBride and Steed Malbranque to become Fulham's leading career Premier League goal scorer; 12 this season gives him 33 in the league since joining Fulham. Not bad for a Yank. With four tough fixtures left on the calendar I don't know that I expect him to add to that though.

Sigh. 1-0 to Monterrey tonight, they win 3-2 on aggregate.

Re: World Soccer XX: I paid Jack Warner $1M for the right to start this thread

Mullan gets 10 games for his tackle on Zakuani. Have to say I'm a little uncomfortable with that.

Or no contact at all. (Start at the 1:40 mark).
