Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

The England premium is a crazy thing.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Sky breaks hugely important transfer news while we're all waiting to hear about Carroll and Forlan:

Burton Albion full-back Kevin Grocott has joined Blue Square Bet North club Vauxhall Motors on a month's loan.

*whew*, I for one was worried that Vauxhall Motors were not going to find themselves a new fullback in this window.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I would say look at this season in terms of expectations. Were they expected to win the CL and EPL? Probably not. Obviously as a fan you (not you, the royal you :p ) would have those hopes. I agree the need to improve, but to this point they may have overachieved.

Well, JFG, as I so rightly predicted here just a few short posts ago, Arsene Wenger DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help this team win a thing this year in the January transfer window. It is now closed and, no, Arsenal does not get the center back we soooo desperately need. We don't get the legit #1 goalkeeper. And, we don't get the holding midfielder (although this clearly would have been #3 on the priority list). Thanks, Arsene. I hope you had a nice sleep today. Oh, Chelsea got Torres & Luiz today. Thought you might like to know that. Wave buh-bye to any shot now at the league crown. Hey, but look! At least your team made more money and was still the most profitable team going!!!! Weeee!!!!

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

If I didn't hate Torres for what he did, I'll hate him for what he said. Carroll's departure from Newcastle was done with dignity. Torres' money grab is fine, they're all mercs but there is no need to make those kinds of comments.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Rovers moves (although mostly only I care) at the deadline.

Blackburn Rovers signed 19-year-old striker Ruben Rochina from Barcelona.

Rovers then signed Argentinian midfielder Mauro Formica on a three-and-a-half-year deal. The highly-rated 22-year-old arrived from Newell's Old Boys for an undisclosed fee.

Newcastle's Mr. February is pretty happy to be there I bet.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

MLS has another "big announcement" tomorrow. It will likely be underwhelming, but I guess some of the bigger deal things being announced could be:
1. New York Cosmos getting a team
2. New TV deal reached
3. New Playoff format announced.

Maybe also season schedule to be released?

Yeah, that's probably the most likely. I was listing some of the "bigger" items that could be announced, all of which are sort of unlikely. I guess Donovan and Henry are participating in the announcement, so take that for what it's worth.

There's rumors that the Cosmos are getting a team for 2013. Where they'll play? Got me, I've heard they're trying to get a stadium out by Citi Field or play at Wien Stadium at Columbia until they can find a suitable place to play, but I don't really buy any of it.

What I think would be cool, but likely be too much of a bureaucratic nightmare, is if they put a nice sized (20,000) stadium across from Yankee Stadium on top of the parking structure where a soccer field (albiet small) already exists.

I know we've kicked around the idea of them putting in a field over by City Field where they could have an excuse to clean up some of the Iron Triangle, and with Flushing Meadows and the tennis stadiums there, that would be a nice area for NYC to host some Olympic events if NYC ever puts in another bid for an Olympic. Having stuff already build and in long term use would be useful for the USOC. Plus, it might be better overall for the Red Bulls on one side of the metro NYC area, and the Cosmos on the other side, get more of that cross town rivalry going there.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Yep, it was underwhelming.

The Big Apple will finally get another bite at the MLS All-Star Game.

For the first time in 14 years, the New York metropolitan area will host the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game after the league announced on Tuesday that the 2011 edition will be played at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., on July 27 at 8:30 pm ET.
