World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

MLS announced today that Houston will now be in the Eastern Conference, moving over to keep the teams even with Portland and Vancouver joining.

Gotta love "sports geography"... laughable really when you think about it. Only in sports would Houston be considered "Eastern". LOL!!

Of course, the Dallas Cowboys are in the NFC EAST... and the St Louis Rams are in the NFC WEST. Really?? STL is a hell of a lot further east than Dallas is... just sayin'....

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Michael Bradley joins Aston Villa. That's fantastic. I think a move to Turkey would have been a setback for him.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I think if they get 42.5 plus Sturridge it would be great value for them. On his day he is unplayable, but he's been hurt so much the last few years i'm not sure how much you can count on him. Liverpool needs a bunch of players and if I was one of their fans I would rather have say Ashley Young, Charlie Adam, Danny Sturridge, and maybe a left back or central defender instead of him. You don't want him around the team if he is unhappy either.

The problem is they have three days to sell him and the odds are he was already tapped up by Chelsea. So we need to figure out what we can get back PLUS we're going to give Chelsea IMO the best striker in the world.

But you know what, Stevie G almost ended up as Chelsea TWICE. I want to see how this team plays with Torres until the summer and then we'll let him go. Or maybe he'll want to stay.

Any official word on this? I wouldn't mind playing that game somewhere in Europe. Cairo, not so much right now.

Latest word was yesterday morning when US Soccer said it was still on, and they were monitoring the situation.

Villa has loaned Curtis Davies out as well, more activity in this January than the last few years combined. Maybe it is a case where the club has felt that since they were top 6 in years past there was no need to make many moves since top 3 wasn't going to happen anyway .... boy a trip to relegationville sure changed their ways. Perhaps Houllier has convinced them that MON had built a stable top 10 team but it was never going to get any better than that...they were always low scoring and dependent upon the backline and GK. So, a big shakeup in style and players...the jury is still out if this is a good idea, Houllier is no spring chicken, I hope they don't completely rebuild the team to see him retire in a year.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Jeez.. It is no wonder that Eboue, Diaby, and Denilson get nearly 0 time on the pitch during regular Arsenal games. They are dreadful. Yeah... you need depth, but these guys are just pathetic. Today should have been a walk in the park, but instead Arsenal plays it into a near replay after Squillaci's dumba ss challenge puts them down to 10 men for around 65 minutes vs League One's Huddersfield Town. Squillaci is a good example of what happens when you cheap out and try and pass it off as a world class caliber signing.. this guy is a very average center back at best. Better to cut bait with him in the summer and hope Vermaelen (a much better use of 10m pounds, IMO) is healthy going forward.

In typical Wenger fashion, it is January 30th (one day before the transfer window closes) and he has not addressed two HUGE needs.... one that is glaring: still no center back brought in. Man... it is sooooo OBVIOUS that we need help there, but no... he just will not buy. Gary Cahill is sitting out there and can likely be had for the 8m-10m range from Bolton. Nothing. Chris Samba from Blackburn? Never even made a call to see what they would want. It is just maddening. 5 pts from the top spot and Arsenal seems content to just let Man Utd roll away with the title..... again. Last yr it was Arsenal not wanting to pony up for Chamakh in January when it was clear van Persie would not be back until very late in the yr. Arsenal was in first place in January then.... and lost because Wenger was again doing it on the cheap. Who knows? He goes and buys Chamakh then, and Arsenal maybe can make a run at the title....but no. NO strikers to step up and lead and Arsenal loses. I fully expect Arsenal to NOT sign anyone today or tomorrow to help the back line. I fully expect no holding midfielder (or legit goalkeeper), either. Arsenal will do what they always do and be just good enough to make the Champions League and watch others take the crown. Very very frustrating....

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Fulham (in the person of Clint Dempsey) have just earned two penalties in about as many minutes, and Michael Dawson was sent off. Looking dire for Spurs right now as Danny Murphy converts the second penalty.

Edit: Rather, it was Dembele who won the second penalty. Still a good, active match for Dempsey thus far.

I know it's probably posturing, but I really doubt Cahill would be sold for 8-10m, Malts. Haven't Bolton valued him at over 20m?

And my house is worth $2.5m, too..... Cahill would/could move for much less than 20m.... But, it really is irrelevant as Arsenal have no intention of paying any amount of money for him--- clearly. As I said, very frustrating. There are not that many holes in Arsenal's XI, but dam ned if Wenger is gonna sink or swim with what he's got. Sigh...

They seem to be swimming pretty well at the moment.

Too much time left.. and with Koscielny and Squillaci as first team center backs.... well.... it is only a matter of time. 4 months is too long to hold out. Also, what if either of them gets injured? Vermaelen is not due back for at least another 4-6 weeks. I just have seen this story play itself out wayyyyy too many times.

Arsenal will beat Birmingham City for the Carling Cup and Wenger will say, "Hey, we got some silverware on our shelf now!" Yippee... He might be able to swing the FA Cup, too, but there is no way in hell Arsenal get the league or the CL (especially now that Nasri will miss the Barcelona tie first leg at minimum). I don't know... just all feels pretty hollow right now as it does not have to be that way. You look all around you and teams are bolstering themselves with transfers to make runs at trophies and we sit here ---- most profitable team in England -- and our hands are once again shoved in our pockets and will get nothing but a shrug from Wenger and the standard "There was no one we wanted out there that we feel could have helped our team better than what we already have." And the beat goes on.....

Well, that was unexpected and awesome.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Crawley Town gets drawn against Manchester United. Hope they have a good showing. I like the fact that they want Chelski in the last 8.

I would say look at this season in terms of expectations. Were they expected to win the CL and EPL? Probably not. Obviously as a fan you (not you, the royal you :p ) would have those hopes. I agree the need to improve, but to this point they may have overachieved.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Newcastle have reportedly accepted a 35m pound bid for Andy Carroll from Liverpool. Wow.
