World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Barcelona's 40 points (13 W, 1 D, 1 L) through 15 games are the most in the history of La Liga. Not only that, Madrid's 38 points (12 W, 2 D, 1 L) are tied for sixth most. (Four teams have had 39 through 15 games, including Barcelona last season.) All of the top eleven (38 points or more) are either Madrid or Barcelona in various seasons. I can see why the other 18 clubs are concerned about a duopoly that just seems to be getting worse with developments like Barcelona's tremendously lucrative (reportedly about $45 million/year) new Qatar sponsorship.

Also the reason given for firing Allardyce is ridiculous.

The Champions League thing is outrageous, but other than that really don't think it's terrible reasoning. Look at Bolton. They sacked long ball merchant Gary Megson last year, and now Coyle has them playing some really really nice looking stuff, and are in line for a spot in Europe next season.

I dunno, just seems like 2 years is a bit short for a guy who kept them out of relegation and then had 10th place finish the next season. Give him some money and see what he can do.

Seems dumb to care more about style than results, especially in England of all places.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I don't know if this is a joke or not. But Maradona is said to be in line for the Blackburn job?

Not a joke.

How awesome would that be? I guarantee he'd be sacked within 6 weeks though.

Also, from a goal.com story:
It has been reported that whilst Allardyce was looking at signings such as David Bentley, Roque Santa Cruz and Robbie Keane, the Indian owners were keen on former Hull City midfielder Geovanni and Middlesborough striker Kris Boyd.

I'd be backing Allardyce on that one myself.

I guess my general point though is that I really feel like a manager who plays such a direct style like Allardyce can only take a team so far, and if the owners ambitions really are that high, it's not outlandish to look for someone new. Now, if that someone is Diego Maradona, and he's going to be using Geovanni to get there? Yeah, maybe not so much.

Wait, Kris Boyd plays for Middlesbrough now? Kris Boyd who was the top scorer in the Scottish Prem four of the last five seasons and is still only 27? I guess that's a pretty strong indictment of the quality of that league.

I don't see how Blackburn don't get relegated if they hire Maradona. The only reason his Argentina were competitive in the World Cup is because they had incredibly talented players; the first time they ran into a team with good players and an actual game plan, they got demolished.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Gold Cup sites announced.
GOLD CUP 2011 SCHEDULE

First Round

June 5 – Cowboys Stadium (Arlington, Texas)

June 6 – The Home Depot Center (Carson, Calif.)

June 7 – Ford Field (Detroit)

June 9 – Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte)

June 10 – FIU Stadium (Miami)

June 11 – Raymond James Stadium (Tampa)

June 12 – Soldier Field (Chicago)

June 13 – Red Bull Arena (Harrison, N.J.)

June 14 – KC Soccer Stadium (Kansas City, Kan.)

Quarterfinals

June 18 – New Meadowlands Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.)

June 19 – Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium (Washington)

Semifinals

June 22 – Reliant Stadium (Houston)

Final

June 25 – Rose Bowl (Pasadena, Calif.)

Final at the Rose Bowl could be great, should be a full house if it's US-Mexico. Kind of skeptical about attendances at some of the football stadiums for first round games. RFK getting rewarded with a quarterfinal? I understand the history, but it's also a dump.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Apparently I was right in my assessment of Rafa being considered a failure at Inter.

Rumor is he will be out any day now and possibly replaced by Capello if Fabio is interested.

Too bad that the finals will be so far away from me, but I'm in for the semis. Got a coworker who has Texans season tickets, so I might be able to get something through him.

From Twitter:

So, they wanna move 2022 World Cup to winter cuz they're concerned about high temps. Better way to deal with that? NOT HAVE IT IN QATAR.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

So how's that Stephen Ireland deal working out for Villa?
Oh, that well huh?

Gérard Houllier says Aston Villa will look to sell Stephen Ireland in January after the midfielder expressed a desire to leave the club less than four months after joining from Manchester City.

The Villa manager, who has omitted Ireland from his squad for the second week running, also warned any other players who are disgruntled with his regime that it is case of "adapt or you die".

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Arsenal-Stoke, Fulham-Liverpool, Manchester United-Chelsea, all called off. Wigan-Villa and Birmingham-Newcastle as well. Spurs-Blackpool too.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

How much longer is the "We're not used to all this snow!" excuse going to fly? Second year in a row something like this has happened.
