Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I can't believe this. They're reasoning is Arabs deserve a world cup. Why didn't they think about that when they did africa? They could have gone with Egypt. This is just plain stupid. I can deal with losing to Australia but Qatar?

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

I would've actually liked the Aussies getting it if we didn't. USSF needs to raise holy hell about this.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Over/under on total fans that die of heat stroke or heat exhaustion: 100.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

So who is rooting for Israel to make the 2022 World Cup to cause a real crap storm? :D

That would be very interesting, and also very possible. Israel is a middleweight in Europe, but fully capable of qualifying.

It would be far more interesting that if they made it, if they were placed in the same group as Qatar.

Interesting...I'll take the under. They're going to be under intense scrutiny about the heat that they will do everything in their power to prevent this. It'll happen though. 130 degree heat will do that.

Anybody seen any round-by-round vote totals yet?

They normally don't release that, but they might for this round of voting. Supposedly England was out in the first round with only 4 votes. That's a rumor though.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

If by some chance Israel qualified in 2022, if I'm on the team I'd have to seriously consider not going. Being a martyr's great for the history books, but seriously, what are the odds of getting killed at that World Cup? 50/50?

I don't think anything would happen. If Israel qualified, there would be a great amount of security to make sure nothing happened.

Now, if something did happen, that would be the end of any Arab country ever getting to host again...at least for a very long time.

They said they are releasing round-by-round voting later today in order to be transparent.

Somehow I'm betting the people who would want to murder athletes don't really care about that.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Can't, unless they change the rules regarding continental rotation again. Supposedly the last 2 host conferedations are ineligible; so Asia and Europe are off the map.

Rules? In FIFA? No rules!

Qatar? Wow...just...wow.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

My guess is that BBC will have the productions values of an AV Club after losing the 2018 Bid.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

Fun facts from the Guardian's blog:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2010/dec/01/world-cup-2018-2022-zurich

After much discussion about the British media's role hurting the 2018 bid. David Tiltman emails:
Here's a ranking of today's bidding countries according to where they appear on the current Press Freedom Index:

Netherlands (3)/Belgium (14)
Japan (12)
Australia (18)
England (19 as part of UK)
USA (20)
Spain (39)/Portugal (40)
South Korea (42)
Qatar (120)
Russia (140)

Interesting, given Fifa's issues with the press recently

And for vote totals:

First round: England 2, Holland/Belgium 4, Spain/Portugal 7, Russia 9
Second round: Holland/Belgium 2, Spain/Portugal 7, Russia 13
Russia win

For 2022:

Qatar beat USA 14-8 in the fourth round of voting, but almost claimed it in the first round.

First round: Australia 1, Japan 3, USA 3, Korea Republic 4, Qatar 11
Second round: Japan 2, Korea 5, USA 5, Qatar 10 votes
Third round: Korea 5, USA 6, Qatar 11
Fourth round: USA 8, Qatar 14
Qatar win

Australia only got one vote?

On the bright side: very little risk of dying of alcohol poisoning? I guess?

I don't see how knowing who voted for what countries does anything to dispel the allegations of corruption.

Re: World Soccer XIX- Full of Pomp-ey and Circumstance

From Wikipedia:

When contrasted with other Arab states such as Saudi Arabia, for instance, Qatar has comparatively liberal laws, but is still not as liberal as some other Arab states of the Persian Gulf like UAE or Bahrain. Qatar is a civil law jurisdiction. However, Shari'a or Islamic law is applied to aspects of family law, inheritance and certain criminal acts. Women can legally drive in Qatar and there is a strong emphasis in equality and human rights brought by Qatar's National Human Rights Committee. Qatar also has the largest fines in the world in terms of traffic violation as per the recent change in 2010.

The country has undergone a period of liberalization and modernisation during the reign of the current Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who came to power in 1995. The laws of Qatar tolerate alcohol to a certain extent. However, the few bars and nightclubs in Qatar operate only in expensive hotels and clubs, much Distribution Company, the only importer and retailer for alcohol in Qatar. Under Qatar's Sharia, it is illegal to show alcohol or be drunk in public.

During the month of Ramadan, eating, drinking, and smoking in public is strictly banned from dawn to sunset.

In common with other Persian Gulf Arab countries, sponsorship laws exist in Qatar. These laws have been widely described as akin to modern-day slavery.[34] The sponsorship system (kafeel or kafala) exists throughout the GCC, apart from Bahrain, and means that a worker (not a tourist) may not enter the country without having a kafeel; cannot leave without the kafeel's permission (an exit permit must first be awarded by the sponsor, or kafeel); and the sponsor has the right to ban the employee from entering Qatar within 2–5 years of his first departure. Many sponsors do not allow the transfer of one employee to another sponsor. This does not apply to special sponsorship of a Qatar Financial Centre-sponsored worker where it is encouraged and regulated that sponsorship should be uninhibited and assistance should be given to allow for such transfers of sponsorship.

That's what I call a pro-business climate.

Apparently in 2022, Ramadan will be in April. So that should be a non-factor.
