Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Benzima?

I think the last thing France needed out there was another ball hog.

The only thing about Benzima I'm wondering is how long it takes Mourinho to release/loan him.

Great line by Lalas:

That's not a handball, Henry. You know what a hand ball is.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Now, let's just hope Uruguay and France spank El Tri and send them home in shame.

I agree with this. I still say the problems were in the midfield, the French didn't hold the ball well at all until they went up a man.

I still say the problems were in the midfield, the French didn't hold the ball well at all until they went up a man.

Good analysis. Certainly the French owned part of the problem.

I was largely responding with my frustration toward the announcers. In my best Scottish accent, I think they were a bit harsh toward the South Americans. Portraying that performance as a totally defensive effort designed to gain a 0-0 tie was just crazy to me. Uruguay played the classic European counter-attacking style that almost half the teams in Europe, including Inter Milan and a good portion of the EPL, employ. They just missed their chances at net. They could of, and should of, won that game 2-0.

Which brings me to a topic we might discuss over the next month and that is ESPN/Budweisers internet poll for Man of the Match. I try to avoid being a soccer snob because it's very uncool, but how could anyone have voted Forlan man of the match. He was the biggest failure of the match. His inability to convert his teams counterattacking opportunities cost Uruguay the match. That's hardly Man of the Match material. [/snob]

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

catching up on the thread and watching the RSA vs Mexico game...I find it hilarious that the announcer doesn't even know what the actual rule is for offsides

I agree completely. And I also think Uruguay was completely undersold as an "underdog." Uruguay is good- probably just as good as France. If Forlan took a chance or two, they would have been deserved victors. It's not like Uruguay is Honduras or New Zealand; they go toe-to-toe with Argentina, Brazil and about five other tough teams in CONMEBOL, and win their fair share.

My man of the match was probably Lugano, he kept that back line organized and efficient. Forlan would (due to Henry's start on the bench) win the "Most Hyped of the Match" award, in my book.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Finished watching both games from today on the good ol DVR.

RSA/MEX was actually fairly entertaining. Was hopeful for RSA to win after that beautiful first marker.

FRA/URU was a snoozer. Uruguay was playing for a draw all along and France never looked like they had an idea how to get past the 5+2 defense scheme.

I am fairly excited for South Korea/Greece tomorrow AM. I feel it could actually be a quality game.

Really? I'm praying for an early goal because that game could easily become the most unwatchable of the tournament otherwise.

Agreed. I enjoy the tactical soccer, but if you didn't like Uruguay's strategy today, you are going to HATE Greece tomorrow. That is some truly negative football.

The Tshabalala goal and description by the ESPN announcer was brilliant. His later, "sha ba la la la la la la" was also awesome. I was annoyed post-game that they kept saying SA is going to walk away disappointed they didn't win the game, clearly ignoring the several 1st have chances El Tri didn't put away.

If I'm reading this right, I think you overpaid for El Tri. Serves you right. :p
This report has a neat animation of the Schlalalalalala goal.

http://www9.dw-world.de/tagesvideo/index.php?v=en&s=681

It shows the goal from behind the shooter.
Love the pass from my boy Dikgacoi. :D

Also, when did Rachel Maddow start doing sports TV?

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Didn't take the Greeks long to get 11 behind the ball.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Lee Jung Soo! 1-0 KOR.

Terrible marking by the Greek #9 (looking him up... Angelos Charisteas, F, Nuremberg), he was responsible for Soo and left his man.
