World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

My main motivation in seeing North Korea and Japan get thumped is that they [CAF, AFC, I can't keep them straight] might lose half a World Cup bid next time around. CONCACAF probably wouldn't get that half, but if South America did it would put "us" in a play-off with New Zealand, which you gotta like over the current South America.

What determines how many bids each "section" gets? Is there a formula?

Also, I was bored and looking back on where the World Cup has been played:

1986: Mexico (North America)
1990: Italy (Europe)
1994: USA (North America)
1998: France (Europe)
2002: South Korea/Japan (Asia)
2006: Germany (Europe)
2010: South Africa
2014: Brazil (South America)

Just a couple questions. Has Central America ever been considered? Or is that just viewed together with Mexico, US, etc.? What about Oceania...Australia?

Any leading candidates for 2018? Seems to me like it will be back in Europe.

Given the number of venues needed to host and the relative size and wealth of Central America (as well as the fact that FIFA tends to frown on joint bids between countries), no, I don't think you'll see Central America host a WC. Plus, as far as confederations go, they are represented by CONCACAF.

One other thing, local starting times in South Africa appear to be 1:30 PM, 4 PM, 8:30 PM...in that range.

As Brazil is one hour ahead of EST, starting times would be around 12:30, 3 and 7:30 EST

Australia counts as Asia now, so Oceania will probably never get to host one.
There was a rotation system implemented at one point, but it really was probably just a ruse to get a World Cup to South Africa. Now Blatter has come out and said they no longer will go by the rotation system.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Just did a little research and it looks like the 2018 European bids are:

England, Russia, and the two joint bids, by Belgium/Netherlands and Portugal/Spain.

Would FIFA allow that to happen though? That would put the late game at around 12:30 am in Europe.

I'll give you all one guess which of those I would not want to go to.

I'm not even guessing which one... but isn't there serious doubts that belgium will even be a country then?

Yeah you can see the difference a playoff opponent makes. In 2002 it was against some forgettable Asian team and Trinidad and Tobago went through. This year Uruguay dismissed Costa Rica. God forbid we ever need the playoff, but it would be an easy opponent would be a nice thing to have in the back pocket.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

S1TV returns tomorrow. Sweeeeeeet.

Re: World Soccer XIII: Through the Group Stages

Tonight is the John Oliver US Soccer episode on The Daily Show.

Thanks for the heads up!

Did I mention I'm getting very excited? My friend Johnnie Walker is excited as well. Rooney getting a red card for stomping some Portuguese guy in the balls is a lot more fun after a little whiskey. Just like a UND boarding penalty is.

Here is a wikipedia page on the bidding process for 2018 and 2022.

As mentioned, Central America doesn't have any counties that could have the required number and size of stadiums.

There are probably only about twenty countries in the whole world that could feasibly hold a World Cup by themselves. I wonder if Canada has ever seriously considered it?
