Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Union manager Piotr Nowak was asked for his thoughts on Seattle from the game last night.

Let's just say he was not impressed.

"We got to see all this flopping and diving and when you see the stats we have eight fouls and six cards that is too much. There is guys rolling around on the pitch like they got shot. I think we need to recognize there are guys doing this stuff and trying to take advantage of the referee decisions. I expect someone like Freddie Ljungberg who has scored so many goals and played hundreds of games with the national team and won so many trophies would be more honest than he is. He is complaining and whining about missing a goal and trying to push the referee for a yellow card is not up to his standards. I believe and we both played the game and I believe when you play the game you not only try to win but try to be honest with your effort."

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

MLS is a physical league, no doubt.

It's funny, because the commenters took note of some of Freddie's comments during his first season with MLS about how physical it is and how much they let go, and how he expected to get more calls. Harkes kinda dismissed that as Ljundberg expecting to get calls because of who he is rather than a real difference in the physicality of the league.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Their unis would be pretty cool if it weren't for the shorts.

They get carded in their first minute of play. They get their first red in their 40th minute in their history. Something tells me that these guys will be very popular in Philly.

They looked like 10 retirees in polos and golf shorts with dark socks...when Liverpool wears the gold shorts they wear gold socks and it looks fine.

When the new stadium is done, they will play in Chester, PA...makes Philly look like Beverly Hills...they'll have to be tough just to get there and get into the locker room.

Boy did both sides struggle with the wet turf...the ball was sliding past guys, skipping into their feet etc.... a lot of bad first touches which made for some choppy play.

Looking forward to the home opener although I wish it wasn't at the Linc.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Chelsea 1 - Villa 0 through Lampard

Hull 1 - Fulham 0 through Bullard after Jozy drew a PK.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Crouch! I love that goofy bastard. 1-0 Spurs over Pompey.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Man, Huddlestone hits the bar from 25 yards, followed ten seconds later by Crouch off the post, then after a short corner (I don't understand the short corner when you have Crouch), Crouch bicycles hard right into David James' chest. Fun sequence, but a goal would have been nice.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Still 2-0 Spurs.

Hreidarsson was stretchered off for Pompey, replaced by Webber.
Webber was later stretchered off and was going to be replaced, but David James also picked up an injury and they needed to use their last substitution to bring on a substitute keeper.

8 minutes of injury time on the way.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

That Seattle crowd is like a European crowd, chanting and singing the whole time. Very nice
I went to a game last year. The atmosphere around Qwest is just crazy and that's before the game. Inside it's even crazier with everybody standing and chanting and occasionally singing, it's a workout just to be a spectator at the games. The "Seattle!" "Sounders!" call and repeat chant is the best, the way that echos around.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I got a text from a friend who's there saying it's only about 2/3 full (it's cold here tonight, plus they made a pretty big deal about the friendly against Santos being the "grand opening"), but LOUD.

I'm liking what I'm seeing from Joel Lindpere so far. Also, John Harkes has a huge hard-on for Collins John.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I hated Nyarko at Virginia Tech (terrible work rate), and his MLS career hasn't changed my opinion.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I would pay an extra $10/month for FSC HD. Sadly, I don't have that option.

San Jose - RSL starting on FSC now.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

It's game one, but RSL's Javier Morales has a goal of the year candidate already.

Holy moly that was pretty.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Curt Onalfo appears to have successfully imported his particular brand of mediocrity to DC from Kansas City. Early on, but what a silly hire

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

F that...

He's got two.

I saw those goals and they will be the early leaders.

United thumped Bolton 4-0. Berbatov looked excellent. Tuesday will be the test in Munich against Bayern and may be a chance for Sir Alex to get a look at Franck Ribery (who may join United in the summer window.)

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Wow, those were a couple of nice goals.
