World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Injury-depleted Barcelona (without Xavi or Abidal, Ibrahimovic limited to the bench) are up 2-0 on Stuttgart at halftime (3-1 aggregate) on goals from Messi and Pedro. It'd take a pretty surprising collapse for them not to advance at this point.

Shoot darn.

By which you mean "cool", I assume. :p

I like the variety of clubs that will be in the QF this year. If present results hold, 2 from England, 2 from France, 1 each from Spain, Germany, Italy and Russia. Way more interesting than it being the Premier League Big Four and a couple other assorted clubs.

Now 3-0 on another goal by Messi. He's in absolutely torrid form lately.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

In MLS news, FSL owner Dave Checketts Commented to the Deseret News about the owners plans for a player strike:

"I just came from a meeting with several owners and the commissioner down here in Los Angeles, and we know exactly what we'll do. These are all owners who've been in the NBA, they've been in the NHL, some of them own Major League Baseball teams even today. We know what we'll do. We have a plan if the players strike," said Checketts.

"I just hope the players understand the implication of the threats they're making to strike because if they do in fact go on strike, then that forces the owners to do something very aggressive and very different."

Assumptions run abound about replacement players, especially about the large number of players being waived lately.

This would've been my idea for a strike if I was an owner. Do away with the Senior International limit during the strike, have the foreign players cross, sign buddies from South America, Europe, Africa, Asia etc. Start the season and turn to the Players Union and say "Ok, now what?"

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

As a season ticket holder of the Philly Union I can say that I don't know any players on the team other than reading about them...if they put 11 different guys out there then we'll still be at the games.

A strike amongst professional athletes in the US would seem to require that the public care about who is playing on the field more than they care about having the game in the first place. I just don't see that being the case with MLS.

This is like a minor league baseball strike...few people are going to the games to see the handful of big names in the league...they go for the sport and while they'd prefer to see the best players available, I don't see them putting pressure on the owners like they would in the NFL, MLB or NBA.

In this economy I'd think the guys would be happy that teams still exist and that people are putting out the kind of money they do for tickets and new stadiums...I'm fully with the owners on this one.

I'm glad my son's Union jersey doesn't have a name or number on the back.

Wolfsburg had the winning goal waved back on the last kick of regulation for offsides. Fortunately they scored in OT to advance.

Nice to see Fulham dispose of the cheating scum from Juventus.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Liverpool and Fulham make the last 8 of the Europa Cup.

Lets see who gets who, some very strong teams left in it.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

You think a Europa League title keeps Rafa from getting the axe?

It's not really about his performance. If it were, he would have been canned long ago.
Plain and simple, Liverpool can not afford to fire him. I think they are hoping that Real Madrid will come take him off their hands.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

The draw for the Europa League quarterfinals (which, HOLY ****, have Fulham in them!):

1. Fulham vs. Wolfsburg
2. Hamburg vs. Standard Liege
3. Valencia vs. Atletico Madrid
4. Benfica vs. Liverpool

In the semifinals, the winner of QF1 will face the winner of QF2 and the winner of QF3 will face the winner of QF4.

And the Champions League undercard ;):

1. Lyon vs. Bordeaux
2. Bayern Munich vs. Manchester United
3. Arsenal vs. Barcelona
4. Inter vs. CSKA Moscow

As above, in the semifinals the winner of QF1 will face the winner of QF2 and the winner of QF3 will face the winner of QF4.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Kind of too bad that the two French teams got drawn with each other. Also the two sides that play the prettiest football, Barcelona and Arsenal, are matched together.

It's done.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2010/03/mls_players_union_reach_deal_a.html

Five days before the season opener, MLS and the players' union have reached agreement on a new, five-year collective bargaining agreement. The players had threatened to strike if a new pact couldn't be reached this weekend. With approximately 25 players in attendance, the sides met all day and night Thursday and Friday, and announced the deal this afternoon.

The players' primary issue was free agency, and although they were not granted full rights to move between clubs in the league, they did agree to a "re-entry draft" for players out of contract at the end of the season.

More details to come.....

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Seems like some decent gains were made by the players. Tough to really tell until salary details and the re-entry draft process if fleshed out a little more.
Hopefully in 5 years the players are in position to push for more.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Ohh!!! How in the hell was that not a red on Mascherano????? My God.. if Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen got a red for what he did yesterday (slight pull of the shirt from behind), then what the hell should Mascherano gotten... two reds?? That was BLATANT. As it is ... the ref gives him only a yellow. Rooney's penalty kick gets saved by Reina, but he buries the rebound. Bad luck for Reina. Justice is done, but a very lucky man is Mascherano to not be off the pitch.

Liverpool had struck first with a sublime header from Torres (hardly shocking). So it is 1-1 at 25 minutes and tempers at Old Trafford are definitely amped up. No one is happy at the moment...
