Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

4-0 United and 7-2 after aggregate. I think Italians don't want to be going to Old Trafford any time soon.

You think so?

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

One thing I can never understand from ManU people. A desire to hurt one of your best ever players who didn't leave of his own volition, brought in a ton of cash, didn't complain about ManU punting him when he was no longer an uber elite player, nothing.

All he did was act with class. God Forbid anyone wants to be a ManU player when you've got wonderful fans like you behind them.

:D

Truth.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

*Sigh*

So much for the progress of MLS. We'll be lucky if the league gets as much attention as the USL in two years.
You get the feeling that players just do not realize this at all. The owners know it and that's why they didn't go for a lockout, why they've been willing to bargain, give and take. Yet all the players seem to do is just stand there and yell "We want! We want! We want!" without realizing they will have no career at all if they continue.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I also get the feeling that Glidden, Home Depot, Dick's Sporting Goods, Herbalife, Best Buy and all the other MLS sponsors are going to be getting a rash of applications for their regular-person jobs before you know it.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

A sub plot if a strike does occur, is what happens to the MLS based US National Team guys? I guess they would go to train with US Soccer full time, but that's not an ideal situation. Luckily we don't have too many national team guys in MLS anymore, but still not ideal for Brian Ching, Heath Pearce, and company

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Pure stupidity by the players. Not everyone can go overseas and play. The players really need to wake up.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

So what's the deal with Landycakes - is he still with Everton?

He plays his last game with them tomorrow I think...unless MLS strikes...then he can go back to Everton. His loan officially ends by the March 15 but if there is a strike he could be back as soon as March 25.

Ultimately we only have like 2-4 MLS based national teamers left and most of them aren't first choicers, so its not a serious problem.

There have been several articles published today that basically say the MLS Player's Union may not have actually voted to strike. It was more like a "We're serious about this, we're actually going to strike this time!", but they aren't prepared to walk out just yet. A vote of 350-2, just doesn't make sense, especially for foreign players in MLS.

I'm sympathetic to some of the player's demands, but the issues like ensuring rookies get a minimum salary (34,000 dollars a year) are on the back burner, while the Union seems to be pushing free agency which the owners will NEVER bend on.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Rooney strikes for United to make it 1-0 and 4-2 on aggregate. Almost halftime. Lots of work for the Rosanerri.

Terrier, to continue on my point, I always thought Milan had that air of entitlement to them. They walk around like they are better than everyone else. Their arrogance is the reason I despise them.

Their arrogance is the reason you despise them? Is this some sort of joke coming from a ManU fan? :D

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

True, but its probably better PR for the League and USA soccer if Captain America plays a few games stateside in the MLS.

How so? There's no way the PR of him playing in the MLS is better than the PR of an American being successful in the best league in the world.

Arrrrrggh.

Yeah, earlier indications were that the first player vote was 2/3rds for a strike and 1/3 against it, breaking almost exactly in terms of player nationality.

I also agree that the players are barking up the wrong tree here. I am sympathetic to the cause, but free agency is simply not going to happen. I don't think fully guaranteed contracts should, either - perhaps they need more of a signing bonus type deal, or guarantee contracts for one season at a time. I'm also sympathetic to some of the player movement issues that do not involve free agency - like how a team can control a player even if they aren't under contract.

But, if they strike, it'll be one of the stupidest possible outcomes. The league has great momentum off last season - Seattle has huge buzz and big crowds, Salt Lake just opened a new stadium and now has a championship for their trophy case - we're about to bring a new team into the league in Philly, also with strong ticket sales and we'll see two brand new, soccer-only stadiums opening in Philly and New York - not to mention the obvious tie-ins with the World Cup.

Any sort of a work stoppage is unacceptable.
