World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

But it would help with attacting more of the fringe type fans to games, parents of future MLS players probably want to see a star in the league there.

Fair enough. Conversely though, at some point MLS needs to start letting its' stars leave, or risk alienating young players. For example, say I'm a 19 year old wonder kid with massive potential. At this point, you'd have a pretty tough time convincing me to sign with MLS, because when I'm ready to move on in 3 years, who's to say MLS would be willing to let me go?

I'm not really sure what you're talking about here. By and large, MLS has let its stars leave, so long as it's gotten reasonable bids for their services. Look at Jozy Altidore, Tim Howard, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, Carlos Bocanegra, Brad Guzan, Stern John, etc. If anything, Donovan is the exception to the general pattern of talented young players leaving MLS (I mean, it's not like the league is rolling in so much money that they can afford to turn down fair offers) and it's mainly been because, for whatever reasons, things haven't worked out for Landon at Leverkusen and at Bayern and he's wound up coming back to the States a couple of times.

Are they really treating Donovan any differently, in any case? Moyes has said he wants to extend Donovan's loan deal, but we don't know what the terms are. Maybe Moyes is offering the same amount of money as they've been paying (whatever that is) and MLS wants more now that he's been playing well in the EPL. Maybe they think they can do better if they bring him back for the start of the MLS season and then find a buyer for him in the summer window - there are reports that Chelsea are interested, and if that's the case then MLS is looking at a potentially significant payday. Maybe they just feel that the amount of money they're making from Everton doesn't outweigh the marketing advantages of having him here in the couple of months before the World Cup and they'll be happy to sell him after that.

That was a dismal performance by Liverpool today.

Wigan???!

In summary, MLS is behaving like every other non "Big 4/5" league in the world. The only difference is that MLS may not be condemned to spend its entire existence as a feeder league (decades down the line of course).

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

If anyone is watching, who are the announcers for the Arsenal-Porto game today? Are they the same guys who do the FIFA video game?

edit: Never mind, they just told me.

Bendtner converts the penalty to record a hat trick as Arsenal go against predictions and thrash Porto 5-0. Not what I or probably most folks expected.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

You had to expect Arsenal would go through, a little surprised by the scoreline though.

With Fabregas sidelined, not to mention Gallas, this one was very much in play and I wouldn't have been surprised if Porto had pulled this one out. But, on the right day, Arsenal can do what they did today. Of course with Arsenal, you half expect them to lose at Hull now, they've been so hard to read.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Props to Arsenal. They looked awesome without their two best. Let's hope United can see Becks out and send him back to LA crying.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

I wanna beat him so bad that he'll beg to come back early.

One thing I can never understand from ManU people. A desire to hurt one of your best ever players who didn't leave of his own volition, brought in a ton of cash, didn't complain about ManU punting him when he was no longer an uber elite player, nothing.

All he did was act with class. God Forbid anyone wants to be a ManU player when you've got wonderful fans like you behind them.

:D

I was just joking. It's more me hating Milan than Becks. I never wanted him to leave. And judging by the way Cristiano Ronaldo talks about United, the place isn't as bad as all of the haters think it is.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Rooney strikes for United to make it 1-0 and 4-2 on aggregate. Almost halftime. Lots of work for the Rosanerri.

Terrier, to continue on my point, I always thought Milan had that air of entitlement to them. They walk around like they are better than everyone else. Their arrogance is the reason I despise them.

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

Rooney is good.

So Man U to the final eight? Who else has already advanced?

Re: World Soccer XII: South Africa Awaits

4-0 United and 7-2 after aggregate. I think Italians don't want to be going to Old Trafford any time soon.
