World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

HOK is a bit lame lately. It's like they're all making cookie cutter stadiums and not enough creativity is involved.

I want more of a difference between each stadium.

And what do you want with creativity? Cool features? That's entirely the problem - everybody wants something that's 'unique,' thus the clients drive the architects away from making good designs.

Nationals Park wanted something cool and unique, and they ended up with a Homer car.

Creativity is fine, but there's no reason to re-invent the wheel.

The old cookie-cutter stadiums of the 60s and 70s weren't bad because they were all similar, they were bad because they were multi-purpose - they served lots of disparate events, yet served none of them well. That, and economic obsolescence.

Nationals Park

Coors Field

This is WAY off the main topic here but we're all a bit stubborn here. The similarities are pretty crazy between the two, especially after taking a walk around both places. Swap the Rock Pile with the Centerfield restaurant-type thing and the places where the wall climbs higher and the bullpen in right and the aesthetic placement of the scoreboards, its the same layout.

That's not a knock on them, I enjoyed both places just that Washington is bland because there's no history in that team whatsoever, but you can get chili from Ben's Chili Bowl which sure beats Rocky Mountain Oysters any day. :D

I'm not sure what you're getting at - they're both baseball parks?

Nationals Park tried to be a monument a failed miserably. It's got a modern design with faux-retro finishes, it's been placed in a part of town with no real context and will completely redevelop in the next decade. It's a horrible case of design-by-committee.

Coors, on the other hand, responds wonderfully to the brick context of LoDo. It's one of the few Retro parks that doesn't feel forced or out of place. The playing field is remarkably simple - three straight outfield fences, etc. The park interfaces well with the city around it, while Nationals Park had that potential to interact with the rest of the city - and they put up two horrendously ugly parking garages beyond the outfield gates, instead.

Nationals Park wanted straight fences for the retro feel, even when most of the grandstand was curved to create the monumental feel. They put a notch in there for no good reason, except as an homage to the old Washington ballpark (of course, that one had a notch in the wall for a reason - there was a house on the other side of the fence).

I can scarcely think of two HOK 'retro' parks that are more dissimilar.

Bringing this back to soccer, for those that think the Spurs' plans are too similar to Emirates, what would you change?

I'm curious to hear what specifically you'd change, and see if you can avoid a Homer car.

The new Spurs stadium at least has that single tiered, Kop-like area by the one goal.

Emirates has the multi-tiered, basketball-arena kind of thing going on all around it.

That's a significant enough difference right there.

Exactly. That's a nice little difference.

But, given the other requirements of the stadium (capacity, suites, club seats, a roof, etc.) you'll quickly find yourself with a similar design - and for good reason.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Fulham once again up 1-0 on Roma at the half, this time at the Olimpico. Interesting to see if they can hold the lead this time; a few weeks ago, Roma came out and absolutely dominated the second half.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Roma equalize through John Arne Riise after being handed a man advantage from a ridiculous straight red once again, this one to Erik Nevland. Roma's Okaka then got nothing (already on a yellow) for a challenge that was worse than Nevland's.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

And now 2-1 Roma, from Okaka, who should've been sent off 20 minutes ago.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

That hometown officiating was worse than Azteca. Roma can go **** themselves sideways.

Wow!

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Chelsea's transfer ban is suspended by the CAS.

They'll be able to make signings in January.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Was that all the same girl for New Mexico? How does she not get suspended for the rest of the season? That was like watching a montage in a movie about bullying or something.

Jesus Christ, she's Ogie Oglethorpe.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

I didn't realize it, but I think we actually just found the worst ref and linesman in sports history.

Yeah, those were all the same girl. That's one angry b-tch.

And holy hell am I an instant fan of the BYU ladies.

Don't sweat the suspensions, they just got bounced out of the conference tourney.

Absolutely. Single worst officiated game ever.

Yeah, those were all the same girl. That's one angry b-tch.

Someone needs to check that girl for some kind of mental illness.

Oh, and yes, those are some sexy mormons. I bet they look great in their special garment.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

I love when the ref finally gave her a yellow. She had about 8 red card worthy offenses in there.
