Seattle wins the US Open Cup tonight 2-1 over DC United. First expansion team to win the trophy since the Chicago Fire. Great game to watch, if you see it repeat on FSC I'd give it a watch.

I couldn't believe DCU's goalie was arguing with the red card. Dude, you went out of your way to stomp on the goal scorerer's hand. Just get off the field.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

This is a joke, even by UEFA standards. Heck, you could have Bud Selig running the place and they'd make more sense. And everyone knows what I think of Bud Selig. I won't even say much about them being the slightest bit consistent, as we know this won't be an on-going wave of diving calls and suspensions. One of the biggest precedents though is that you've got them redoing something that a referee made a call on and has publicly stated he stood by his call. What would have been a yellow in game is morphed into a two game suspension while undermining the referee. Reffing is enough of a mess. This just makes it even worse.

The ref's call was terrible. If he is standing by it, that should be a check against him when he comes up for review. He got it wrong. That was no PK.

My only problem with the diving ban isn't the theory behind it; deliberate attempts to con the ref are pretty low. But it needs to be applied consistently. If the FA or UEFA can go back and retroactively issue cards for off the ball conduct I have no problem with the same for blatant dives. The rules may need to be changed, but a one game ban for all similar incidents is something I'd like to see.

I remember seeing it live and going "WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot is Montero doing on the ground?"

Real boneheaded move by Wicks there.

I watched the end of the game - last couple of minutes and then added time.

Was Keller wearing an iPod during the game? If so I declare him pimp of the world.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Tried to do a quick roundup of interesting games for the next round of qualification that starts on Friday.

Africa
Gabon-Cameroon: Interesting dynamic here. When Gabon's president died in June (after 42 years in office), the game in Gabon was postponed. Now the game will take place on Friday in the wake of the country's election. Gabon won their first two games of the group and can really seize control if they do well in a home and home with Cameroon, who struggled in games against Morocco and Togo. These games are do-or-die for the Indomitable Lions, who are in danger of missing two straight World Cups for the first time since they first qualified for one in 1982.

Tunisia-Nigeria: The clear top teams in Group B tangle for the last time. This is a must-win for Nigeria, any other result firmly ensconces Tunisia in the driver's seat.

Benin-Mali: If this game ends in a draw, Ghana will probably be the first African team to clinch a berth, since they are playing Sudan and will probably destroy them.

Asia
Bahrain-Saudi Arabia: The two-game playoff is Friday and next Tuesday, the winner gets to probably be favored over New Zealand in the AFC-OFC playoff that starts next month.

Europe
Denmark-Portugal: Portugal is in deep trouble anyway, and they won't be able to win the group if they lose this match, while Denmark can guarantee at least second place (and probably a playoff game) with a win.

Hungary-Sweden: Sweden is almost as dire as Portugal, and Hungary can get almost as much out of a win.

Greece-Switzerland: Winner takes charge in Group 2.

Scotland-Macedonia: Pivotal game for second place in Group 9, which concludes on Tuesday. With Norway likely to beat Iceland, it's a must win for Scotland, who play the Dutch on Tuesday (although probably a Dutch B team, since they've already qualified) while Macedonia and Norway face off. Macedonia takes the driver's seat with a win, while Norway probably benefits from a draw. Of course, with Holland's overall ownage, all of these teams are in precarious position for being the worst of the second place teams anyway.

North America
Costa Rica-Mexico: El Tri at the Saprissa. A win from the Ticos would basically cinch the World Cup, while a loss by Mexico would make me happy. Muck Fexico. If Costa Rica, the US, and Honduras all win, the Ticos are mathematically guaranteed at least the playoff with the South American 5th place.

United States-El Salvador: Anything less than victory and the Yanks are firmly in the grey area with Mexico. Yipes.

South America (Friday and Tuesday)
Brazil-Argentina: Not that there's any doubt, but Brazil will officially qualify if they beat Argentina and Columbia beats Ecuador.

Brazil-Chile: Top two teams tangle Tuesday (alliteration rocks). Both could be South Africa bound by the end of the round.

Paraguay-Argentina: Three and four get together on Tuesday as well.

I was at the game.

Not sure what to make of Wicks. He had some brilliant saves in the 1st half. Then probably the single dumbest thing he could have possibly done. I think the kid has anger management issues. Last week in a league game against Chicago, he got in a little tussle with Marc Burch, his left back, for not pushing the defensive line up high enough on a set piece.

Boneheaded play.

Kudos to Seattle, they played well. United looked out of sorts and didn't get their **** together until the end of the game - but by then they had 10 men and it was a tough road.

Great atmosphere in RFK, too.

United is old. They'll likely blow it up in the off-season and re-build. They've got some promising young pieces to build on, but the core group of players is old and slow, and it showed last night. Too bad that some of their recent acquisitions were cup-tied, thus couldn't play last night. If they were available, I think DCU might have gone with a 4-4-2 they've used recently instead of coach's favorite 3-5-2 - that's what dinged DC on the two goals - unmarked guys on the second shot...

We really need 6 points from the next two games. I'd prefer to go to the Costa Rica game knowing we're assured of qualification.

I'd also like to see the Scots advance. They'll need to recover from that beatdown Norway handed them.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

I'm not a huge fan of the funny business that goes on with player tampering prior to transfers, but I think that the penalty on Chelski is excessive absent a history of similar violations where smaller penalties did not shape them up. Seems to me that a single transfer period ban would be more appropriate, maybe with a corresponding upward bump in the fine.

Edit: Oops, should have read the article. They've already gotten hit by the EPL for tampering with Ashley Cole. Also, Roma was able to get a prior ban reduced to a single transfer period by the CAS; if I were Chelski, I'd want to get the case expedited so as to avoid having the ban fall on the summer transfer window.

Different disciplinary bodies. I think the FA went too easy on the guy who broke Eduardo's leg, personally.

Edit: To wit, Axel Witsel of Standard Liege got banned for 10 league matches and 1 cup match for a leg-breaking tackle, and UEFA may wade in and ban him from one or more CL matches.

Then, too, the only way I would consider two games for diving remotely reasonable is if the proper caution for simulation would have brought a one game suspension (thus, one game for the proper punishment plus one game for fooling the ref).
Ummm... yeah, this would be the incident in question. If you have just eaten something, I recommend not watching this for at least an hour.

At least when LT broke Thiessman's leg, he had enough class to call the trainers over right away.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

And UEFA's campaign against diving has begun, and ended, with Eduardo. Makes you think the Scots really have the ins at UEFA for them to pull this out for a single questionable incident and then put it away again.

The Chelski decision does seem a bit harsh to me, but I bet it gets either rescinded or reduced before January. And you wonder if this will be a one-off like the Eduardo diving witch hunt, or if they will go after teams like Real Madrid who tap up players constantly without any sanction.

This is the first time I've ever seen a post claiming that the SFA is pulling the strings anywhere south of Carlisle.

As I already observed, it's not a one-off. The same sanction was previously levied on Roma, who had it reduced to a single transfer window ban in the CAS.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

One thing I have noticed that no one has brought up: Chelsea is going to have trouble because they lose a lot of players to ACON...they don't have the depth to compete strongly in all the Cups plus the EPL if they're going to lose those guys for a few weeks.

Also God forbid some of them get hurt while they're in the tourney.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

In those Saturday matches identified as important:

Africa:

Cameroon defeated Gabon 2-0 on the road, which puts the Indomitable Lions in much better shape. The teams play again in Cameroon Wednesday. With another win, they would take the lead of the group with only a home match against Togo and a road trip to the current bottom team, Morocco, remaining.

Asia:

Bahrain/Saudi Arabia ended in a 0-0 draw. Teams meet again in Riyadh Wednesday with all to play for.

Europe:

Portugal barely managed a 1-1 draw with the Danes and is barely alive in its group. Thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic's late winner for Sweden in a 2-1 victory over second-place Hungary, Denmark is four points clear in the group with a Wednesday trip to Albania looking like a great chance to consolidate its position, followed by two home games against both Hungary and Sweden.

The Swiss beat Greece 2-0 to take the lead in Group 2. However, a tough trip to a Latvia side that will smell a chance at history is a big hurdle Wednesday.

Meanwhile, it was a great day for the Tartan Army. The Scots beat Macedonia and watched Norway throw away two points in a 1-1 draw at Iceland. Now, any points Wednesday against a Dutch side with nothing to play for put Scotland in second in the group.

In other results, Slovakia is inching dangerously close to winning their group. They drew at home with the Czechs and Northern Ireland drew with Poland, which puts them three up with a game in hand on NIR and five on Poland.

Meanwhile, thanks to an incredibly-useful Big Soccer thread, I can report that the following countries were eliminated today: Rwanda, Guinea, Moldova, Luxembourg, Estonia, Armenia, Faroe Islands, Montenegro and Cyprus.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Also in Africa, Ivory Coast throttled Burkina Faso 5-0 to basically assure their trip to South Africa.

Now to the US game....
