Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Congrats, you picked a team an ocean away that's been good your entire life. I love punks like you, talking trash about accomplishments you have no part of.

Sweet.

The whole concept of adopting one EPL team as your own is foolish to begin with. None of us have any part of the accomplishments a team overseas piles up. I love hearing and reading about all these American born "supporters" of whatever club they happen to choose.

It's Xabi Alonso, and he was sold because he wanted out after a row with Rafa over missing a Champions League match to attend the birth of his daughter.

After a row? You should publish a soccer dictionary.

What, you mean like you did?

LOL

Yes, because finishing in our highest league position in many many many years, and making a Cup semi to boot is a terrible terrible failure.

our?

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Wow, is Fulham really playing the first friendly of the preseason already? The Europa seems like just a couple of weeks ago...

*clears throat*

Build a bonfire!
Build a bonfire!
Put the Brentford on the top!
Put the Chelsea
in the middle
and we'll burn the ****ing lot!
I still think my favorite that I found looking online for hockey ideas was:
Who's that twat from Argentina?
Who's that money grabbing whore?
Carlos Tevez is his name and he hasn't got a brain
Cause he won't be winning trophies anymore

I don't think its all that outrageous...its no different than any of us rooting for a different country after the US lost. We all want to have a "horse in the race" so many americans just choose one and dig in. I still haven't really decided which one but it makes it far more interesting following the standings and watching the matches if I choose a side (no matter how hollow the reason). It certainly has the feel of non-basketball fans picking an NCAA bracket. Maybe your reason is a certain player is on their team or you like their jerseys or fans or whatever. I have a feeling I will end up picking Everton and see how that goes. I certainly was following them while they had Landon and watched when they were on. I'll watch even more now that FSC is in HD.

Row isn't really a soccer only term. It just means fight, argument, etc.

Ha, maybe I just never hear anybody use it in everyday conversation. Figured it was a "british" based term.

I think it is different in that the World Cup is once every four years and a tournament format. The way I see people talking is that they're diehard fans of an individual EPL team. I don't know--just doesn't register with me. Don't get me wrong, I love watching the EPL Review show on Sunday nights. I just can't get myself so invested that I religiously follow one of their teams like I was born and grew up there.

That depends on your reasons for picking a team. Are your reasons personal (ancestry, lived there once upon a time, etc.) that will stick with you over time or superficial and somewhat arbitrary reasons (they win a lot, you like one of their players, or you just sort of picked them at random) which could conceivably change over time?

For example: I often root for Germany, Austria and Norway as backups since my ancestors are from there. I sometimes root for Costa Rica because my hometown has a sister city there and my mother was very involved with that when I was growing up (as such, there are lots of old friendships with Ticos). While I would never take those rooting interests so far as to use the term "we", I do think that would take something very significant (war, for instance) to make me choose another country (besides the US) over them.

It's a little harder to have a personal connection with a club team halfway across the globe when you didn't grow up with them- or don't have some sort of personal connection (family, namely) to them that you were born with. The reasons become much flimsier.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Seriously, I think long after Ireland forgets, Mountie will still be hating on Henry.

I've always hated Henry, TYVM. He's a prissy French diver. The handball just sealed his doom.

I picked United in 91 because I watched an FA Cup game where they played Crystal Palace and United played attacking football. I'd watch other games and was bored to tears by the game of kickball that was played. United was fun to watch.

As for Giggs, I'd love to see it happen. He still needs to treat it seriously because MLS isn't a kick in the Sunday Beer League that some Euros think it is.

I respect Terrier very much. It just seems we butt heads on EVERYTHING.

I don't think it's any different than someone from North Dakota/Nevada/New Mexico picking an NFL/NHL/NBA/MLB team to follow...

My cousin is from South Dakota. He's a Tennessee Titans fan - has been since they moved there. Is his fanhood somehow less than that of someone from Nashville just because he lives further away? Is he unable to take pride in their accomplishments because he's only seen them live once or twice?

Yes, I use our/we for all the teams I support. Badgers, Packers, Man City, the USA, and so on. Why not?

Also Mountie, anytime you want to explain how City finishing 5th last season was an epic failure, or how the Glazers are "competent" feel free.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

When I was in Scotland, my wife and I saw "Panorama" on BBC and they talked about the MASSIVE amount of debt United is in and how the Glazer's are in the process of accruing massive debt in the Tampa Bay Bucs and their real estate holding as well. But Glazer was represented by a red garden gnome. And that was funny.

Or an Aussie becoming a card carrying member of Red Sox Nation or a German kid sleeping in a Kobe Bryant jersey.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

No way to read through all the posts at this point, but I watched the final match at The Local and had a great time. The place was packed to the brim but we had a nicely placed table, only 3 or 4 vuvos on hand that rarely blew (and never during play) and there were plenty of fans on hand to represent/cheer for each side. Was really happy to have been there to watch it amongst so many lively fans.

While I was disappointed with the outcome (I truly felt NED had a slight lead in real chances and wanted them to win) Spain earned the win.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I'm not sure I follow you. You're simultaneously harping on MLS for expanding too fast (and risking bankruptcy) while chastising it for not improving in quality fast enough.

MLS needs to improve in quality, that's for sure. No one disputes this. That's not the number one goal, however. MLS now is far more financially stable and secure than the NASL ever was. In fact, there's probably less risk involved in owning an MLS team than there is in a couple of the marginal NBA or NHL franchises (at least during this last recession).

NASL failed because it tried to buy on-field success. MLS has achieved financial stability and is now looking to entrench those interests via the youth academies, stadium infrastructure, etc.

Nobody thinks MLS will just magically improve, nor have they set unrealistic and nebulous goals of becoming a greater "significance league both in the American sports scene and in the world soccer community" - however that might be defined.

I'm an MLS season ticket holder, I certainly don't need any validation from greater international stature - nor do I think the league needs that to succeed. Instead, I think it's building off of its assets. The games are a lot of fun to go to. Most of the successful clubs in terms of attendance have embraced supporter culture - they are in the process of building fanbases and connections to cities that will last for generations. They're taking the long term approach, which is why stability comes first and why owners are willing to fork over a lot of cash to get a piece of the action.

The reason you aren't following me is that you think I'm criticizing MLS and your knee jerk response is to defend your league regardless. I'm proud of you for that. If you enjoy MLS soccer, great enjoy it. I don't want to diminish your enjoyment.

The reason we get in cyber fights is that other people start talking about how MLS can gain a larger foothold in the American sports market and/or increase its international soccer reputation. Then I point out how MLS can't do that following its current business model. Then you think I insulted MLS when I didn't. I don't think MLS is a bad league. It's basically the J -League with names I can pronounce. :)

Also, if you can't see that league expansion is stripping the league's future ability to attract increased TV revenue by spreading the limited talent too thin to interest a general television audience, I won't argue the point with you.

Honestly this may have been the biggest mistake that hockey ever made. The talent is spread so thin that non-playoff hockey isn't great to watch if it isn't your team. Expansion is great and all but do we really need 30 NHL teams?

I'd rather have 16 great teams in the MLS than 28 average ones...

Well, it would help me distinguish the thoughts of others from your own if you cited some of these ideas from other people. The way you've written them makes them seem like your own thoughts.

There are plenty of reasons to criticize MLS, but it's also worth noting the raw amount of misinformation out there about the league, its health, and its structure.

Also, if you can't see that league expansion is stripping the league's future ability to attract increased TV revenue by spreading the limited talent too thin to interest a general television audience, I won't argue the point with you.

MLS teams don't move the needle on ratings. There aren't many stars, they don't drive the TV ratings. Beckham moved the needle. Blanco, to a lesser extent, moved the needle. The talent pool MLS has to worry about in terms of depth is the Americans, and frankly none of them (even a Donovan) have been major TV draws. Sure, expansion spreads that domestic talent a little thin, but it wasn't thick to begin with. Quite frankly, when people are watching a game at Seattle with a full house cheering, chanting, and singing wildly, they'll tune in for that more than for the individual players on the field.

MLS knows this, which is why they push teams and rivalries and fanbases as a means to build ratings rather than via individuals.

They also know they need to gradually improve the quality of play, which is why they're looking to increase the salary cap in the long term and have increased the numbers of designated players per team (which allowed for this Henry signing) in the immediate future.

Just remember that there's a global talent market out there. Spreading the American talent thin won't matter, they don't drive TV ratings for the league. Opening up more slots for players and offering them more money will eventually improve the product, not diminish it. This isn't the NHL, where you're expanding the top league in the world - this is a league that has targets ahead of it that they can pick off.
