Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Garber says: Not For Sale

I think selling Landon would bring a lot of positives for MLS. But I can also see Garber's argument about keeping him as well.

I care not one whit about the MLS beyond that it succeed and survives... if its better for USA Soccer then it should generally be done... of course this is secondary to the will of the player.

If our national team is better for him playing in Europe then he should play in Europe. The MLS will be there as is marketed as a mid-level sport and is finding its niche there.

I think Garber is right to play it cool on selling Donovan right now. Milk him for the remainder of the MLS season, and if you want to sell hum during the winter transfer window, that's fine.

I think there's plenty of good reasons to play it cool... it also brings up the price. Of course Garber has to look out for the MLS. Selling a player may not be as important as luring over some of the older (retiring) Europeans and having Landon in the league may be better bait.

In general though, I personally desire to see what is best for the national team rather than the best for MLS.

Donovan is tied up for three more seasons after the current one. He had to sign the extension to get MLS to agree to the loan to Everton last winter.

As much as I, personally, would like to see Donovan move permanently to Everton, it's up to Donovan whether he wants to go and up to MLS what valuation they place on him. The only thing I would possibly criticize any party for is if Donovan goes someplace that I think is a bad move for him, e.g. Al-Citeh.

Regarding Donovon and Garber's comments, let's not forget that this is how the European transfer game is played. Most significant transfers are preceded by the owning club claiming they'll never get rid of "Player X" and that he is not for sale at any price. Then two weeks later "Player X" is being introduced at his new club.

For people who like to read the tea leaves, Graber's announcement may signal that Donovon's move to Everton is imminent.

Woo, soccer that counts for EPL teams starts July 29 this year, with the 3rd Qualifying Round for the Europa League. And, hiiiiii-lariously, that first team to compete will be Liverpool, who are in the competition thanks to Portsmouth's ineligibility.

Liverpool will host either Rabotnicki of Macedonia or Mika of Armenia. Rabotniki won 1-0 at home in the first leg of their matchup.

Can Hodgson take another team from a July start to the Europa final?

I think LD's value is as high as it will get right now though. Coming off a successful World Cup, and teams having a tendency to spend a bit more in the summer. Is he really going to raise his fee by banging in a few goals against FC Dallas and the like?

I think the argument is more that MLS wants to use the post-WCboost to try to drive attendance/merchandise sales/etc. and is less worried about how many % it'd add to his transfer fee.

Exactly.

LA plays here in DC on Sunday Night. All of the advertising I've seen for the game mentions Landon Donovan.

Hell, just check out the background ad on DCist: http://dcist.com/

Despite what commish says, MLS would listen to right price for Landon Donovan. But price has likely gone up from around $8m to $15m.

I still think, barring an astronomical offer from someone, that MLS will keep Donovan through the end of the MLS season. LA has a great team, and they'd love nothing more than to milk his presence and newly-increased celebrity all the way through to MLS Cup.

That would be my guess as well. Hell, If the MLS can get a Donovan bump in attendence of say 10% to 15%, why would they want to sell the Face of USA Soccer. Having Donovan in the league easily sells about another 100 season tickets each at all of the clubs in the league. You got 16 teams in the league right now, 18 next year with Portland and Vancouver coming in. If having Donovan around means the league sells close another additional 2000 season tickets, and perhaps gets a better TV deal as well, hard not for the league to want to keep him around for that. They might buy those tickets just to see Donovan, but with time, they could be showing up to see their team, be it FC Dallas, Houston, San Jose, Chicago, DC, Toronto, NY, or KC. The sporting dollar is tight in the USA for now, and any edge the MLS can get right now would be a good thing for them down the road, when Donovan would have to retire. Besides, shouldn't USA soccer be a little more focused on getting some of our younger players over to the bigger leagues to get them more experianced there, so they can come back and become USA stars??

I think $15m sounds about right for Landon. No way Everton have that kind of dough though.
