World Championships: U18 and Women’s

https://victorypress.org/2022/06/10/...ionship-day-3/

Victory Press is doing a great job with coverage. I didn’t realize it was Slovakia who got in due to the Russia ban, I thought it was Germany. Anyway, yesterday had so many great storylines.

The quarter finals are showing on ESPN+. No idea why no one is advertising this, meaning Canada or the IIHF. USA Hockey keeps publishing stuff that suggests the Non USA games won’t be aired; Canada is not sharing the details. Geez people take
some lessons from the US colleges that stream on multiple platforms dependent on country!

After two periods, Canada is outscoring Slovakia 48-3, but the Canadians aren't playing any better than they did last night, though they were better in the second. Plenty of mistakes that Group A teams could take advantage of. A lot of nice individual play against hopelessly overmatched opponents, with a whole that is distinctly less than its parts. The Canadian power play has been especially underwhelming.

In retrospect I doubt Hockey Canada will regret not airing or promoting this tournament tbh

I understand your point is an observation about Canada’s on ice performance thus far, and that’s fine. This comment below isn’t really directed at you, it’s just general.

as a promotion conversation:
USA Hockey did an effective job communicating that their games were on ESPN+ , about 3 days before the event.

Everyone else failed at communicating that actually the whole group A tourney (so far) was there on espn+. Tourney host, IIHF, Hockey Canada...

A version of this happened at the Frozen Four. the final got delayed .also it was on a linear channel that was on a different streaming service than the semis. also the channel changed for those that were watching it on tv due to a LAX game that went long. It has to be SOMEBODY’s job to make sure fans know where to watch. Titleix hockey wrote about this in his blog at the time.

This tourney is imo, really fun to watch. It’s also a niche of a niche of a niche sport. There’s not going to be a ton of eyes on it and it makes sense to get every viewer you can.

Nicole Haase is on site doing reporting. She tweeted that she pitched coverage for the event at various places, but ultimately it was only her steady beat Victory Press where she gets to write. you almost can’t blame a media outlet for passing on coverage when a) broadcast info gets announced 3 days before the event. And b) only one nation embraces really promoting that their games will be on espn+.

I was hoping for a Czech Republic win last night, if for no other reason than having the semis be something other than a replay of Monday night.

But that's what we get tomorrow: Monday over again.
And then we get either a repeat of Tuesday night or of Thursday night for the medal round.

Finally going to make it to the games today. For those who have been going, have they been allowing re-entry into LaBahn? I'd prefer to leave between games for dinner, but that seems to be pretty rare for events these days.

Yes. You scan the QR code 'ticket' to get in, then scan it at the 'exit door' on your way out, and then scan back in again when you return. As far as I know, you can scan in and out as often as you want.

I disagree. TSN/Hockey Canada shared the broadcast schedule for the tournament (one pre-tournament game, all Group A, and then the quarter/semis/finals) about a week before USA Hockey/ESPN+ shared theirs. HC is not going to share that games are also available on ESPN+, since their broadcast deal is with TSN and ESPN+ is not available through Canadian cable/satellite companies. It was a fun twist to have my Amerifriends ask me if I knew if the games were being broadcast in the US - the host country - after TSN announced its coverage.

HC and TSN are sharing results, and HC is doing interviews and little fun features with players throughout the tournament. HC is also sharing IIHF's tweets and posts about the other games in the tournament, including quarterfinal games and semifinals. CBC did a blurb on the tournament because of Jade Iginla. The coverage in Canada is a significant improvement over years past.

I don't disagree that things could improve but it's definitely improving.

Appreciate you sharing what it’s like in Canada. I am honestly thrilled with the progress. It’s hard to balance celebrating the progress of someone’s hard work with observation about what still needs improved. It makes sense if Canada’s deal is with TSN they can’t advertise the ESPN+ stuff, but I think it’s fair to say SOMEONE should have shared it whether that’s at the tourney or IIHF level. If it was shared I missed it, but anyway I enjoyed a ton of great hockey and great broadcast production through the group round and quarters. I think the final two US games are on tv only....it will be interesting to see what the reaction is to that if it is truly the case.

Here’s hoping Canada can right the ship and get a win today vs Finland!

The Canadians run over a Finn in the Canadian zone, no penalty on the call, and then Canada takes a rush and scores a beauty by Chantler to take a 2-1 lead. Ouch, for the Finnish team. I confess that I don’t really know what a check is in women’s hockey but Finland was penalized for what seemed like a lesser collision in the 2nd. Carrying on. Yay Canada for finally finishing.

It was a pretty clean game, but there was stuff getting called all week that didn't get called today. Like the call and non-call you cited. Canada was better today vs Finland than they were last Monday, but not by that much. Timing is everything.

But oh my God, the second game!

I hate to think this way, and I hate to say it out loud. But all four officials for the US-Sweden game were Canadian, and their one-sidedness was simply blatant. Sweden played much better than they did last Monday, and even all week, particularly in the first period, and the US lost a good deal of their "team" game; at least to some extent because they became rattled by ... all of it. But the second period was entirely dominated by the officiating. The Canadian refs backed off in the third period; I think they realized they were 'overplaying their hand'.

The US took six penalties in the second period, plus a seventh that was matched with Swedish penalty (both roughing). The lone penalty for Sweden in the second was a too-many-players that lasted so long, the crowd saw it and yelled long enough and loud enough for the refs to finally call it.

It was just a weird, weird game, I don't recall anything quite like it.

------------
adding, if I did the math right, the US was on penalty kill for 8:53 during the second period (surrendering one PPG), with 2:39 of it as 5-on-3.

Neither do the refs. Overall the officiating has been terrible. It's worse than wcha officiating.

Exactly! Only I feel it extends to the entire women’s hockey world. I’ll never forget how one of the Lams tapped a goalie pad at the end of a play in a gold medal Olympic game and got a penalty. Meanwhile there’s an epic hit 4 years later of Poulin murdering Decker in front of the net in a gold medal Olympic game - no call.

I just go along for the ride. Nobody knows what’s what.

I have to look at the box score for last night’s US game but luckily refs aside they got through it and can be satisfied that they weathered some adversity in this tourney pre gold medal game.

and the US lost a good deal of their "team" game;

I think this is one of the keys to US winning it all tonight. US isn’t the only team that works well as a 5 person unit; Czechia seemed to do it well, Sweden too. Canada really struggled in this regard.

The US dominance as a 5 person unit plus the quick shot releases really separates them. Even Laila Edwards’ assist on the game winner last night...if it was intentional was just a little one touch redirect as opposed to corralling and letting everyone in the building know what’s happening. And then
Dwyer got rid of it pretty quick, just like the team all week. The Sweden D coughed up the puck to begin with because 2 US forwards were swarming her. Super fun to watch.

Canada has quite an ability to unload shots but it just hasn’t translated to the scoreboard. USA will be a heavy favorite but if they for some reason fall apart and play as individuals or if the refs take over (hope not) Canada has a chance.
